A large number of small boats were completely destroyed, and damage to some extent was done to practically every pier from 10 to 40. Several of the larger ocean-going craft In the harbor tore from their moorings, and are at various points along the hay front, some of them well up on the mainland. SCHOONER THROWN INTO SOLDIER CAMP. J. Boyle of Dallas, a refugee, was rushed to The Post in a waiting automobile and gave The Post the first detailed story of the storm, having come to Houston representing Galveston to give authentic information cm the storm and the damage done, and his knowledge of the situation was based upon a personal trip to many parts of the city-Tuesday. He spent the night Monday in his own home and was inconvenienced only by the water rising in the lower tloor. The storm grew in intensity during Monday morning and by noon ihe gale was terrific. Thousands of people left Galveston, and came to the mainland in many kinds of conveyances.

Dr. Powell said. Among those who left were many of the old citizens of Galveston, who had gone through the 190D torm. "The loss of life is insignificant, compared with the 1900 storm, of course," said Dr. Powell, "and the property damage is not to be compared with the damage wrought by the former storm.

We do not wish to underestimate the damage simply because we are Galveston optimists, neither do we want the people outside of Galveston to get exaggerated reports of the damage done, and because we are not able to estimate in dollars and centa the amount of damage, we are not naming any figures, but desire that a true report of just what has occurre'd reach the world, and for that reason I was sent to Houston to make a statement. "It was decided Tuesday afternoon," he said, "at a meeting of the city council, not to ask for outside assistance, as it was thought the city could take care of all cases of distress. Order in the city was good and martial law was not declared, although the army officers, working with the city authorities, detailed soldiers to assist the police force for" a time. on the beach were swept away clean and the only thing left standing on the seawall is the, great iron frame bearing Galveston's slogan in an electric sign "Treasure Island." None of those conditions which marked the aftermath of the 1900 storm are found and although the storm itself was as severe, the water being higher on the bay side of the island than fifteen years ago, and the wind probably stronger, the effects are very different. To the seawall is given the praise for saving the city, the great structure standing solid and without damage, after holding back the angry sea that dashed over it for hours. "The buildings in the main business part of the city suffered only minor damage from the wind, broken show windows, awnings and signs and occasionally a lost tin roof, representing the bulk of the actual damage in this section to buildings.
