1 AUSTIN, Texas, Anj. 16. The State fire marshal bat summed up considerable data pertaining to Texas fires in a bulletin Which follows: "Seventy per cent of Texas fires are preventable. "The property fire loss in Texas In 1018 was about sixteen million dollars. The loss in 1918 is a fair annual average.

Therefore, in a period of 10 years we burn one hundred and sixty millions of our created wealth. Individual titlsens are directly responsible for 70. per cent of this burning. It is the result of our inference to be careless instead of care-ul, indifferent instead of interested, ig-v norant instead of enlightened, regarding common fire hazards. Could Pay Stats's Bills.

"The Thirty-sixth legislature of Texas appropriated nearly thirty million dollars to take ear of the Bute's obligations for the two current fiscal years, beginning September 1, 1019, and ending August 31, 11)21. During this time, judging the future by the past, we will burn enough property to pay the entire bill, and, mind you, 70 per cent of the loss will be easily preventable. We'talk a lot about high tax levies to meet the State's financial needs. What about the fire tax levy to meet these preventable losses? What about the human lives sacrificed in these same preventable fires? Are they not worthy of some consideration? "The per capita fire loss in Texas is more than $3. This is about eight times the per capita loss in European countries.

We boast of our civilisation in comparison with the civilisation of Europe, and in many respects we are superior, but in the matter of the sacrifice of human life and property in preventable fires-we are a hundred years behind. In this country we spend a great deal of energy and large sums -of money in preparation and training to fight fire fire extinguishing and only a little effort and. a miserly turn in fire prevention. In Europe they spend quite a bit of energy and some mpney in fighting fire before it happens fire prevention. The results are that in this country we.

have plenty of fires to fight and a very large loss of life and property, while in Europe they have very few actual fires and a very small loss of Lfe and is this difference in method that is the secret in the difference in per capita lost. Poaches oa Trust Fan.
