D-6 riTTSBURGH rOST-GAZETTE SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2001 OBITUARIES PETER W. JUSCZYK THE REV. DR. JAMES D. FORD Ex-chaplain for House committed suicide Researched babies' language development that language ability is hard-wired in the human brain.

It also altered the long held belief that babies learn speech by making sounds themselves. Babies apparently "don't need to babble before they can tell the difference between sounds," Mr. Jusczyk said in 1998. This early research by Mr. Jusczyk and Eimas reinvigorated a field of investigation that had its roots in the work of 19th century evolutionist Charles Darwin.

It enticed other researchers to study infants' language perception and development. Others subsequently found that babies can differentiate between sounds even at birth. In another important study, Mr. Jusczyk found that babies as young as 6 months could associate words with their meanings. He and colleague Ruth Tincoff showed two dozen 6-month-olds videotapes of their parents on two monitors.

When a synthesized voice spoke the word "mommy" or "daddy," the researchers found that the infants looked at the video image of the correct parent significantly more often than would have been expected by chance. To rule out the possibility that the babies might associate "mommy" with any woman and "daddy" with any man, Mr. Jusczyk exposed another set of 6-month-olds to videos of other mothers and fathers, but hearing the words did not trigger an association. That told Mr. Jusczyk that the infants had an explicit understanding of "mommv" as "my mommy" and "daddy" as "my daddy." "Six months is the youngest age anyone has been able to show that children seem to pair sounds with a specific meaning," he said in an interview after the findings were published in the March 1999 issue of the journal Psychological Science.

In previous studies, 8 or 10 months was the youngest age at which babies were thought to have that capacity. In other experiments Mr. Jusczyk found that babies as young as 412 months could recognize familiar sounds, such as their names. By 8'i months, Mr. Jusczyk and colleague Sven Mattys found, babies can tell where words begin and end.

Mr. Jusczyk taught for six years at the State University of New York at Buffalo before joining the Johns Hopkins faculty in 1996. Born in Providence, R.I., he graduated from Brown University in 1970. He earned a master's degree in 1971 and a doctorate in psychology in 1975 from the University of Pennsylvania. He wrote "The Discovery of Spoken Language," published in 1997, which examined the acquisition of language in the first year of life.

By Elaine Woo Los Angeles Times Peter Jusczyk, a Johns I lopkins University researcher whose pioneering studies advanced scientists' understanding of how and when babies develop language, has died. 1 Mr. Jusczyk, 53, died of a heart attack Aug. 23 while attending a conference in Pacific Grove, according to a spokesman for Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. He headed the Infant Language Research at the university, where he also taught psychology arjd cognitive science.

Through sophisticated experiments that gauged babies' responses to verbal cues, Mr. Jusczyk showed infants have the ability to recognize sound patterns and match them to meanings long before they begin to babble. He made one of his most significant findings while attending Brown University in the early 1970s. He co-wrote, with Peter Eimas, an influential study that used sucking responses to show that month-old babies can perceive subtle differences in sounds, such as between "pa" and "ba." Published in the journal Science in 1971, the study provided some of the first hard evidence supporting theories by linguist Noam Chomsky periencing personal tragedy and alcoholism. Dr.

Ford's retirement set off a rancorous House debate over the choice of a successor. As his retirement approached, he told a reporter that he preferred to see congressional bickering as a positive sign. "This is not a monastery," he said. "The noise here is part of our democracy. I traveled in the Soviet Union in the 1950s.

I went to their parliament, and there was no noise. I went to East Germany; there was no noise. I prefer noise. I prefer argument. That's a sign of health." James David Ford, the son and grandson of Lutheran ministers, was born in Sioux Falls, S.D., and grew up throughout Minnesota.

His father's surname was Anderson, but he changed it because he felt it was too common in that region; he selected Ford because he felt the car firm was distinctly American. Dr. Ford was a graduate of Gus-tavus Adolphus College in Minnesota and received a doctorate in divinity from Wagner College in New York. He was ordained in 1957 in what is now the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He was a parish pastor in Ivan-hoe, from 1958 to 1961 and then became an assistant chaplain at the U.S.

Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. President Lyndon Johnson appointed him senior chaplain in 1965, and he held that title until coming to Washington. In private, Dr. Ford was something of a daredevil. A skilled skier since childhood, he once won a bet for backward ski jumping.

307 major league games, he compiled 31 saves and a 3.52 ERA. After his retirement, Mr. Selma returned to Fresno and took a job with Fleming Foods, working nights so he could play and coach baseball in the area. He also was an assistant at Fresno City College and served as the pitching coach at Clovis High as recently as last season. David R.

Hunter, 90, a retired Episcopal priest and a pioneer in interfaith relations, last Sunday at a retirement community in Moorestown, N.J. He was a former resident of Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Hunter, who held a Harvard doctorate in education, was deputy general secretary of the National Council of Churches from 1963 to his retirement in 1975. In that post, he organized the council's office on Christian-Jewish relations.

His work in Christian-Jewish ties began during World War II in Boston. He and a local rabbi took part in creating a Good Neighbor Association to deter street attacks on Jews in the Mattapan section of Boston. A native of Pittsburgh, he grew up there and graduated from Westminster College in New Wilmington, before attending Union Theological Seminary in Manhattan, where he received his divinity degree. OTHER DEATHS Dick Selma, 57, who compiled a 42-54 record during 10 seasons in the major leagues, 'Wednesday of liver cancer in Clovis, Calif. Mr.

Selma, who grew up in Fresno, made his major- league debut in 1965 with the New York Mets, then went on to pitch for the Chicago Cubs, 'Philadelphia, Milwaukee, California and San Diego. He was the pitcher of record in the expansion Padres' first win in 1969 and the follow-' Ing year struck out 153 batters as a reliever with fhe Phillies, still a National League record. Ford, a Lutheran pastor who became the U.S. House of Representatives' first full-time chaplain in 1979 and served in the post until retiring last year, died last Monday aboard his boat at a marina in Washington, D.C.Hewas70. Washington Medical Examiner Jonathan Arden said Dr. Ford died of a gunshot wound and that his death was a suicide. As chaplain, Dr.

Ford's duties included opening each legislative session with a prayer and providing counseling and pastoral services to House members and staffers. He estimated that he performed the marriage ceremonies of 30 House members during his career. He officiated in October at the wedding of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and congressional staffer Callista Bisek. Dr. Ford was reportedly the first House chaplain to serve full-time.

Previous chaplains held other pastorates or were retired clergy members on pensions. He faced re-election every two years, and in the mid-1990s some political observers expected Republican House leaders, in a budget-cutting gesture, to make the chaplaincy voluntary again. The chaplain said it never came about because of his good relationship with members of both major parties. Gingrich, the House speaker from 1995 to 1999, said Dr. Ford's greatest strength was his effective personal counseling of members ex wife Isabelle Henry and second wife Dorothy Henry.
