Eppard to lead By MARC STEIN Sun Sports Writer SALINAS They don't play this way in Japan, which is where Jim Eppard wants to be in 1992 far from third base, home plate or a pitcher's mound. He stopped at each of those three spots Wednesday, and six others too. On a strange and historic night, Eppard played nine positions for the Salinas Spurs, all with a glove on his right hand. The novelty of his daring created excitement in the finale of a drab season for the Spurs, who beat the San Bernardino Spirit, 2-1, before 3,518 at Salinas Municipal Stadium Wednesday night. He is believed to be one of the few if not the only left-handers in baseball history to appear in every capacity, adding something special to a career that includes four minor-league batting titles. And, to increase the shock level, Eppard was the winning pitcher, producing a scoreless inning that coincided with Salinas' two-run fifth. "Jim Eppard is such a legend in minor-league baseball, they should make a movie about him," said Spirit player-coach Steve Murray. Murray didn't have a chance to bat against Eppard, against whom he surely would have bunted. It was a tactic the four San Bernardino's hitters who faced Eppard should have considered. The ex-California Angels outfielder, in his first mound appearance since high school, threw a Fitzer to By MARC STEIN Sun Sports Writer SALINAS Like promoted teammates Marc Newfield and Ruben Santana, Spirit reliever Doug Fitzer left Salinas on an early flight Wednesday, bound for Seattle and a meeting with Mariners physician Larry Pede-gana. His first pitch was clocked at 82 mph. He threw 15 in the inning, during which he "got a little excited." "That was a lot of fun, unbelievable," Eppard said. "I wish I could have gotten a play everywhere." When in the field, Eppard was virtually untested. He started in left his usual position then moved as the innings passed. Not until he reached the mound did Eppard field a ball, and aside from his inning as the Spurs' catcher he squatted through a nine-pitch eighth he was mostly uninvolved. Plate umpire Paul Schrieber only had two words to say to Eppard as he prepared to catch: "Oh no." "He threw every pitch I called," Eppard said of Spurs starter Tsuyoshi Nishioka, who played left field while Eppard pitched, then returned to earn a quirky save. "I don't know, is it that easy?" Eppard was the International League batting champion at Syracuse in 1990, with a .310 average, and certainly didn't expect to be here. He was Toronto's final spring-training cut in March. Offer-less, he came to Salinas to attract the interest of the Spurs' Japanese ownership, noting the franchise's working agreement with the Daiei Hawks and Yakult Swallows. "The reason that I'm here is obviously to go to Japan," he said. "If I get the opportunity, it's all worth it. I had to do it." dergo surgery today to move the ulnar nerve in his left arm. Nerve soreness caused a premature end to Fitzer's season. Despite a 5.56 ERA, he was 3-0 with one save and 52 strikeouts in 55 innings. "It's not that bad a surgery," Fitzer said. (714) 694-5722 NOW OPENI Eppard came to the Spurs in late May, and predictably challenged for the league batting title. He was 2-for-4 on Wednesday to finish at .339, second to High Desert's Matt Mieske. It was an honor Eppard didn't need. He won the California League crown in 1985, when he hit .345 for the Modesto A's. "I didn't want to win," he said. "I'm not saying I didn't try. But it's going to mean a lot more to him than me." His 1991 joy came from this effort, for which he used five gloves including a left-handed catcher's mitt from Spirit pitching coach Chuck Kniffin. The challenge figured to be harder than anything in his past, perhaps greater than the .281 average Eppard managed in 139 major-league at-bats. The idea to play all nine positions came from his mother, not long after Eppard suggested to Spurs manager Hide Koga that he could play more than first base on the infield. Throughout his career, Eppard had been strictly a first baseman and outfielder. "We were looking for someone to play third base because (James Bishop) was hurt," Eppard said. "I told Hide, and he just laughed. "It (was) a great way for me to finish the season." With Eppard at short. Derrick Young hit his long-awaited second homer, a solo shot that gave the Spirit a 1-0 lead. San Bernardino (26-42) had only three other hits, ending its fifth season with an overall record of 54-82, last among the 10 teams in the league. surgery begins a new job in three weeks, with the Tri-City Chinook of the Continental Basketball Association. In joining Tri-City, he has found another professional opportunity, after several years at various universities. "What's nice about it is that it corresponds with the baseball season," said Downing, who remains employed by the Seattle Mariners.
