C-6 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Tuesday, February 9, 1993 OBITUARIES i I Dr. Austria of Lawrenceville grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and was a 1983 graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee and a 1987 graduate of the University of Cincinnati Medical School, after which he entered the internal medicine residency program at Mercy Hospital. A Navy veteran, Dr. Austria was a volunteer Confraternity of Christian Doctrine teacher and a member of the Knights of Columbus, the National Federation of Catholic Physicians, the national and state medical association and St. Augustine Church, Lawrenceville.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Bell Austria; his mother, Jean B. Austria of Xenia, Ohio; five brothers, Stephan of Beavercreek, Ohio, Gregory of Xenia, Daniel of Beavercreek, Michael of Kettering, Ohio, and Mark of Xenia; three sisters, Susan Ver-furth of Scotland, Ann Bockrath of Columbus, Ohio, and Marie of Xenia; and his grandfather, Oliver J. Brock-man of Cincinnati. Visitation is from noon to 9 p.m. today at McCabe Brothers Inc.

Funeral Home, 6214 Walnut Shady-side. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Augustine Church, 37th Street, Lawrenceville. Interment will be in Montgomery, Ohio.

Memorials may be made to the David M. Austria, M.D., Memorial Fund at Mercy Hospital. Nellie Ann Bastio Nellie Ann Bastio, who was active in senior citizens' activities in Can-onsburg, died of an apparent heart attack Saturday at her home in Can-onsburg. She was 81. Mrs.

Bastio, a native of Heidelberg, was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Canonsburg Democratic Women's Association and St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg. Surviving are a son, Anthony C. of Roswell, a daughter, Geraldine Anesetti of Scott; four sisters, Victoria Pirozak of Munhall, Julia Byers of Valparaiso, and Mary Kirr and Helen Kloska, both of Canonsburg; and four grandchildren. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m.

Thomas Debevoise Thomas Debevoise, a retired assistant to the vice president of opera- Church, North Later he became pastor of Visitation of Blessed Virgin Mary, Rankin, then of St. Michael, New Castle, where he remained from 1970 until he retired in 1992 and moved to St. Francis deSales. Father Georgevich, a native of Etna, was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union and the Croatian Catholic Union. Surviving are two sisters, Ann Thompson of Upper St.

Goldberg Richard T. Goldberg, a lawyer who had his own law firm Washington, D.C., died of a brain tumor Sunday at his home in Potomac, Md. He was 50. Mr. Goldberg, a native of Greensburg, was a 1964 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School and a 1968 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh Law School.

He also had a master's in law and taxation from George Washington University. He was a lawyer with the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington from 1968 to 1973, after which he was a partner in two different law firms before founding his own in 1985. Mr. Goldberg was a member of the board of the Helen Hayes Institution and the Heritage Investors Management Corp. in Washington.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Goldberg; two daughters, Kammi Reiss and Marni, both of New York City; a son, Jeffery at home; his mother, Jane Berkman of Pittsburgh; a sister, Eleanor Gold of Pittsburgh; and a granddaughter. The funeral is at 4 p.m. today in Temple Beth Ami, Rockville, Md. Memorials may be made to the Jewish Community Hospice, 22C Montgomery Village Gaithers-burg, Md. 20879.

Sue Cullen Griffith Sue Cullen Griffith, a volunteer at the Gateway Rehabilitation Center in Aliquippa, died of cancer Sunday at former Greater Pittsburgh International Airport. He was a member of the Catholic Theater Guild, an organizer of the Ancient Order of Hibernians choral group and a 35-year member of St. Lawrence O'Toole Church, Garfield. Visitation is from noon to 9 p.m. today at McCabe Brothers Funeral Home, 5300 Penn Bloomfield.

Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, O'Hara.

Peter J. Wiesen Jr. Peter J. Wiesen an employee of Crawford Realty Co. for 20 years, died of a ruptured aneurysm Sunday at Presbyterian University Hospital.

He was 77. Mr. Wiesen of Penn Hills was a 1948 graduate of Duquesne University and owned a printing company on Broad Street, East End, until about 1960, when he went into the real-estate business as an agent and broker. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the European Theater, and he was a member of St. Gerard Majella Church, Penn Hills.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Marcellino Wiesen; two sons, Larry P. of Burke, and Ronald R. of Cocoa, two sisters, Rita Wildermuth of North Versailles and Marie Thomas of Zelienople; and three grandchildren. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

ELSEWHERE Salina "Sweetie" Thomas, 76, formerly of Homestead, Sunday in Las Vegas. Frank P. Balistrieri, 74, the reputed head of Milwaukee's organized crime syndicate, of a heart attack Sunday in Milwaukee. Balistrieri, a tavern owner, was released from federal prison in 1991 after serving sentences for extortion. Anwar al-Khatib, 76, a Palestinian who served as governor of Jerusalem under Jordanian rule, of a heart attack Sunday in Jerusalem.

Khatib was an adviser to the Jordanian-Palestinian delegation to U.S.-backed peace talks in 1991. her home in Upper St. Clair. She was 62. Mrs.

Griffith, a Pittsburgh native, attended the University of Pittsburgh and was active in community affairs in the South Hills. She was a member of the house committee at St. Clair Country Club, she helped to institute the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine program at St. Louise de Marillac Church, Upper St. Clair, and she was a former volunteer at St.

Clair Memorial Hospital, Mt. Lebanon. Mrs. Griffith was a member of St. John Capistran Church, Upper St.

Clair. Surviving are her husband, John J. Griffith; three sons, John J. and Mark both of Wexford, and Thomas R. of Amhurst, N.H.; a daughter, Nancy A.

of Butler; a brother, T.J. Cullen III of Aurora, and seven grandchildren. Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters. Theodore Peter Homitz Theodore Peter Homitz, a retired salesman, died of a kidney ailment Sunday in North Side Medical Center, Youngstown, Ohio. He was 67. Mr. Homitz, of Liberty, a suburb of Youngstown, worked for Castle Windows for 13 years before retiring in 1989.

A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member of St. Edward Church, Youngstown. Surviving are his wife, Joyce Kunka Homitz; a daughter, Anna M. Peterson of North Versailles; a son, Theodore of Fort Lauderdale, a stepson, James Braham of Liberty, Ohio; a sister, Eva Papinchak of Westland, and three grandchildren. Thomas F. Shanley Jr. Thomas F. Shanley a retired Allegheny County employee, died of respiratory arrest Sunday in Jefferson Hospital. He was 86.

Mr. Shanley, formerly of Bloom-field and Garfield, worked for the county in the road, bridge and accounting divisions as well as in construction and operations at the Rev. Francis H. Gallagher At Resurrection Church since '67 F. Gallagher, was a priest in Brookline The Rev.

Francis H. Gallagher, a parochial vicar at Resurrection Church, Brookline, since 1967, died of heart failure Sunday in the Vincen-tian Home, McCandless. Father Gallagher, 73, who grew up in Morningside, had been ill for about a month. Father Gallagher was chaplain of the Daughters of Erin and the U.S. Power Squadron South Hills Chapter, a moderator of the Legion of Mary and a member of the Catholic League of Pittsburgh.

He was ordained in 1947, and his first assignment was at St. Mary Church, New Castle. Father Gallagher also was stationed at Christ the King, Ambridge; St. Titus. Aliquip-pa; All Saints, Etna; and St.

Thomas, Braddock. Visitation is from 2 to 3:30 p.m. today in the Frank F. DeBor Funeral Home, 1065 Brookline Brookline, then from 4:30 to 7 p.m in Resurrection Church, 1100 Creed-more Brookline. Mass will be said at 11 a.m.

Debevoise, of Osborne, spent his entire career in the natural-gas industry. He had been employed by Hope Natural Gas, Clarksburg, W.Va., New York State Natural Gas and Peoples Natural Gas of Consolidated Natural Gas, Pittsburgh. He was head of the Peoples Natural Gas Western Division, headquartered in Johnstown, and the Central Division in Greensburg. Mr. Debevoise was a graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, and he was a World War II Navy veteran.

He was a member of the Edgeworth Club and a founder of the Senior Men's Club of Sewickley. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Mac-farlane Debevoise; two daughters, Nancy of Dubois, and Barbara Dinsmore of Washington, D.C.; and two grandchildren.
