House approves spending cuts AUSTIN (AP) The House on Saturday approved $582 million in state spending cuts forced by the oil slump that has put Texas in an unprecedented financial crisis. The voice vote approval came shortly before the House was set to debate a temporary tax hike bill that would raise the state sales from 4Vfc percent to 5V4 percent, and add 5 cents to the dime-per-gallon gasoline taxes until Aug. 31, 1987. The tax bill would bring in $869.2 million and solve the cash flow problem caused by a projected $2.8 billion state deficit. Speaker Gib Lewis said he had the votes to pass the tax bill later Saturday.

The spending cut package, worked out by House-Senate negotiators, now faces Senate review. Among the cuts is the elimination of a 3 percent 1987 pay raise state employees were scheduled to receive. The House had approved $739 million in cuts, but Appropriations Committee Chairman Jim Rudd, D- Brownfield, Saturday told colleagues that Senate had blocked the deeper cuts. "The citizens of the state are far better off to take what we have today," Rudd told the House. Rep.

Mike Toomey, R- Houston, urged House members to vote for the cuts, but sign a statement saying they wanted larger reductions in state spending. "It's the maximum we can do under the circumstances and considering we are a bicameral Legislature," Toomey said, referring to Senate opposition to deeper cuts. The Senate, which had ap- proved $414.4 million in cuts is expected to approve the $582 million package next week. The cuts would include the loss of 1,981 state jobs, 1,460 of them in higher education. Gov.

Mark White, who is pushing a temporary sales tax increase, was on the House floor talking with lawmakers Saturday. "We've been here I think long enough now. I think peo-" pie have had a chance to. review all the intracacies of. the bill," he said.

A wild west marriage Help a good Give to United Way SAN ANTONIO, Texas (AP) Ray Townsend, who changed his name to Johnny Concho after he fell in love with the Wild, Wild West, has brought his only other true love to Texas to tie the knot. Concho, 42, and Julie Ann Hopper, the stars of a Wild West show in Great Britain, planned to marry Saturday during their vacation to the Lone Star State. "We could either sit around in England and spend all our money on silly things like groceries, or come here and get married," Concho said Friday. "We planned on getting married in England, but that seemed boring. San Antonio is a beautiful city.

It's got everything in Texas." The bride planned to wear yellow roses in her hair, while the groom opted for a Stetson, jeans and boots. Concho, who describes himself as "British by birth and Texan by choice," works as a truck driver when he is not imitating the likes of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday or Billy the Kid. He met Ms. Hopper six years ago when she was singing in a country band. She now works in the catering business when she is not acting.

Concho said he became trigued with cowboys when h6 was a boy. Just for fun, he and some fellow fans of the West began pretending to be their heroes. In 1966, a group of nuns asked the British buckaroos to perform for handicapped children, marking the birth of the Wild Wesi show that since has been viewed by Queen Elizabeth II, among others. Concho's first visit to Texafc came in 1978 when he worked 0(1 a Bandera dude ranch and eight months on a Cotulla ranch. "I worked cattle all day and drank beer in the evenings," he said.

On New Year's Eve 1982, he brought Ms. Hopper to San Antonio, and she too fell in love with Texas. The couple had planned for five years to marry, choosing the Texas Sesquicentennial the perfect time. Wai Mfl-t Sr V. -r i' 1 Soils Wai-Mar!
