CALGARY The Leafs played Russian roulette with the Hames last night and got burned by Sovi et Sergei Makarov Giving Calgary far too many power play chances which is akin to putting a loaded gun to your head the Leafs surrendered four goals while short a man and wound up 4 1 losers before 20132 witnesses at the Saddledome i The Torontonians allowed Cal gary six manpower advantages buf six too many against this lames squad In fact all the goals came on the power play The Leafs who were 0 for 2 with the extra man in their season opening loss to Winnipeg Connected on one of four tries against Rick Wamsley lames 4 Leafs 1 Jamie Macbun Makarov with what proved the winner Joe Nieu wendyk and Al Maclnnis helped give the lames their second win as many starts Makarov also chipped in three assists Daniel Marois countered for the 0 2 Leafs who play their third game in four nights tonight against the Oilers in EdmontonAllan Bester was nothing short of brilliant in the Leaf net stop ping 41 of the 45 shots he faced but it enough to spark the Leaf attack Coach Doug Carpenter also tried a few new wrinkles in the lineup by putting rookie Scott Thornton between Vince Dam phousse and Marois and dropping Wendel Clark back with Dave Hannan and Lou ranceschetti but neither moved paid dividends The lames led 1 0 after an opening 20 minutes that was about as much fun to watch as having root canal work Had it not been for Bester the Leafs could have packed it in for the night and headed off for Edmonton The Leaf netminder was razor sharp from the get go stopping Jiri Hrdina from the left edge of the crease in the first minute and performing the splits to stone Gary Roberts in the ninth minute By that point the lames had built a 9 1 edge in shots on goal A hooking call against Scott Pearson resulted in first goal at 11:52 Macoun let a shot go from the left boards that found the top comer behind Bester who was screened by Roberts on the play The shot was 12th of the period compared to Toron two Both teams picked it up a notch in the second period but not saying a whole lot for either club after such a dismal first peri od The Leafs finally forced Wams ley to break a sweat during a power play chance early in the middle period but the lames net minder robbed both Vincent Dam phousse and rookie Scott Thorn ton The Leafs squandered their third manpower advantage a short time later and it cost them About two minutes after the power play failed Makarov put the lames in front 2 0 with another power play marker at 11:43 Toronto finally made the most of a power play opportunity at the 12:36 mark just 34 seconds after Roberts was caught for elbowing Marois beat Wamsley with a bul let to the top right comer from the right circle A double minor to Dave Han nan for accidentally nicking Nieu wendyk in the face with his stick helped produce third power play goal Gary wrist shot was de flected over shoulder by Nieuwendyk who was unmolest ed as he skated through the goal mouth area 1 Notes: The Leaf scratches were right winger Kevin Maguire right winger John Kordic and defence men Drake Berehowsky and Brian Curran Rookies in the Cal gary lineup this year are centre Robert Reichel right winger Ste phane Matteau defenceman Ken Sabourin and left winger Tim Sweeney CP PHOTO SO II HOLDING ON: Vincent Damphousse of the Maple Leafs tries to keep Hames winger
