Richard BOSTON (UPI) Scientists for the first time have found a gene that appears to be linked to alcoholism providing strong new evidence the disease affecting 18 million Americans is caused at least partly by hered ity it was reported A study of tissue from the brains of 70 human cadavers concluded the gene was present in 77 percent of alcoholics and absent in 72 percent of non alcoholics the researchers reported Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association This is the first reported link between a particular gene and the pre sence of alcoholism in individuals although there has been a growing body of evidence suggesting a role for heredity The findings could lead to better ways to identify people at risk of becoming alcoholics and a greater understanding of the underlying causes of the disease which could lead to new treatments and preventive measures The gene a form of the so called D2 receptor is believed to influence how an brain responds to alcohol per haps making him need more alcohol to get a sense of pleasure The researchers stressed the results should be interpreted cautiously Unlike diseases that have been clearly tied to a genetic defect alcoholism is a complex disorder that may have both genetic and environmental causes they said The findings of the panel are expected to be released Monday morning in Piqua Wise who will talk briefly with each group of panelists before the viewings said he will ask participants to not discuss their feelings on the video until the screenings are com plete The request is to avoid influ ence on other panelists before they attend the viewing Wise said If the majority of panel members determine the video is both patently offensive and has no social purpose it will be found illegal The tape is representative of a number of other tapes and the city would then take action against other Piqua stores offering similar videos Klein said If the majority does not find the video is illegal obscenity the city will comply with its findings and not take further action unless run into material different than Pays I Klein said may see this as a based on another Peremya design send the money back
