Balance of trade hits red WASHINGTON (UPI) The US balance of trade pushed by big cost increases in imported petroleum prod ucts went into the red by the largest amount of any month in years the Commerce Department reported to day The value of imports outstripped exports by $777 million last month the department said This is the farthest the US foreign trade ac count has been in the red since October 1971 when effects of a stike forced an $815 million deficit The dramatic slump in the trade balance stemmed chiefly from two factors the enormous increase in the cost Of importing petroleum prod ucts coupled with a sharp decline in exports of US produced agricultural crops and livestock Although the US trade picture after 2 Vi years of surplus has been heading downward toward a deficit position since the onset of the oil price boom last fall big decline was the sharpest evidence that the Arab oil price policy has hit the American market Imports in May were valued a $84 billion Goodrich earns at $15 million Tho Goodrich Co earned near I ly $15 million or $101 per common share on sales of $443 million during the first quarter of 1974 This represents a sales increase of 13 per cent and a net income increase of 12 per cent over the same period in 1973 Pendleton Thomas chairman of board and chief executive officer of the company say that based on those figures sales arid net income in the current three month period exceed the percentage gains that were achieved in the 1974 first 24 TROY DAILY NEWS Wednesday June 26 1974 business Lottery agencies are real and Industry Troy units sold in May a gain of 31 per cent over May 1973 sales The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers say its a result of the increasing costs of food And speaking of that ever increasing cost one local super market Monday paid $24 wholesale for one bushel of peaches Grocers are complaing about food costs too the ones who have to listen to the gripes of the cus tomers DONNA SHILTZ Two essed in time for the first ticket sales set for August 12 computer would ring up the first seven cans at 13 cents each the single unit price When the eight eighth can is scanned the computer automatical ly senses that seven cans have already been priced at 13 cents or a total of 91 cents and automatically discounts the price on the eighth can to 9 cents Thus the customer is actually charged at the multiple price of eight cans for $1 One feature which will be of great value to the retailer is the ability of the computer to keep inven tory records as each item is sold and to automatically re order items when they are depleted to a pre established level Clyde Dawson director of research and development says the system will speed customers through the check out line since the cashier can bag groceries while she runs the items across the scanner handling the items only once Dawson says there are some items which are impractical to run through the scanner because of their wieght or bulk but that eventually nearly every item sold by Marsh's will 6e priced for computer read out going to be a little slow at first until both the cashiers and the customers become familiar with the system he remarked in a very short time I think the customers are going to notice that getting faster more efficent service at the check Another promotion announced is that nf Warren drink itself being taxable and purchasable with food stamps while the bottles themselves are not taxable and the deposits cannot be paid with food stamps Cooperating with Marsh's and NCR is the Hobart Corporation which has developed automatic scales and label ing machines which weigh and mark meat and produce with the computer code One 1 sidelight to the Hobart aspect of the new system is that meat labels will now be standardized in accordance with the recommenda tions of the National Live Stock and Meat Board bones sirloins and Porterhouses for example will be labeled as such and not under such names as etc Store Manager Earl rysinger says he is enthused about the system and that it has been fairly well accepted by employees He said he anticipated that in the beginning some customers will be a bit suspicious of the system but that suspicion should soon disap pear says rysinger system will eliminate cashier error and it also insures the customer that she is getting the full advantage of price breaks on items which are sold in As an example if certain soup sold at eight cans for $1 those eight cans could be scattered throughout a shopping cart of grocer ies As they are checked out scat tered among other grocery items the By KERMIT VANDIVIER Troy Staff Writer Retailing history was made in Troy this morning as the local Marsh Supermarket became the first store in the nation to place into operation the NCR computerized check out system a system which should reduce those long check out lines considerably The heart of the new system is the NCR 255 scanning system which automatically reads the prices of groceries marked on the packages with a special computer code The cashier simply slides the items over a slot in the check out counter and a laser beam reads the price and enters it into a computer As each item is read the price is flashed onto a display unit visible to the customer and the price along with 11 description of the item is printed on the cash register tape This last feature allows the cusotmer to check her purchases at home enabling her to keep an ac curate account of how her grocery dollar is being spent or example if she buys a can of tomato soup at 18 the price and the words are both printed on the tape Another feature of he system is that it automatically determines which items are taxable and which items may or may not be purchased with ederal ood Stamps? A feature which will be added to the system shortly will be the capability Of the scanner to ring up an integrated price By KERMIT VANDIVIER Troy News Staff Writer The only sure winners in new lottery will be the approximately 10000 agencies that will sell the tickets Agents will receive a 5 per cent commission on each ticket sold or a half cent each on the 50 cent tickets It sound like much but if the 'lottery goes as well as officials hope commissions alone will amount to some $65 million annually for an average commission of $650 for each agent But the big kicker in the deal is that the agent who sells the lucky tickets on any of the major drawings will also receive a hefty bonus The agent who sells the winning ticket on the Millionaire Pool for example will get a $10000 bonus with proportionate bonuses given for the smaller major prizes officials also beleive that agents profit from the increased traffic into retail stores pointing out that a recent survey indicated that 71 Patrick 937 Terry Drive has been appointed manager ot ground power engi neering at Hobart Brothers Co A I graduate of the Uni Iversity of New Haven he has been with Hobart Brothers since 1968 He was formerly a project enigneer with the Co solidated Diesel ElectricCo kE 11 37 ii 1 4157 11 A Wha Ar few BSBkf iff Si I I USE OUR CONVENIENT WONDERBANK TELLERMATIC SERVICE Open Six Days Weekly 9 4:30 Monday Thursday 9 7:00 riday 9 1:00 Saturday OPEN SATURDAYS The Bank of Personal Service WESTERN OHIO NATIONAL BANK TRUST COMPANY COVINGTON and PLEASANT HILL BE RICHER TOMORROW I YOU SAVE AT OUR BANK TODAY!
