Scouts are busy Special to the Community Life Eagle Scout Russell Massey and Life Scout John Massey of Boy Scout Troop 271 have just returned from Central Michigan University at Mount Pleasant, where they attended a Boy Scouts of America, national Order of the Arrow conference, Also attending with their group were three scouts from San Angelo, four from Abilene and one from Dennison. The scouts were accompanied by Frank Hilton, Concho Valley Council program director and Armondo DeLeon, assistant scoutmaster 'of Troop 279 in Del Rio. There were approximately 3700 scouts from all across the nation in attendance. The Order of the Arrow is an association of Honor Campers performing service to their troops, community, district, council and country. Scouts (who fulfilled the requirements for membership) must be elected into the OA by their troop members in annual elections.

Russell Massey is the new Lodge Chief for the Wahinkto Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, as well as Junior Assistant of Troop 271, sponsored by the Men's Fellowship of the First United Methodist Church. John is Senior Patrol Leader of their troop. Both have had very busy scouting summers. After participating in staff training for BSA summer camp staff, Russell served on the staff of both Camp Sol Mayer and Camp Fawcett as trading post manager. John, on the waterfront, taught our, district's younger scouts swimming, canoeing and snorkl- ing at Camp Fawcett, while earn, ing his BSA Lifeguard badge.

Other Del Rio scouts serving on summer camp staffs were Tom Barksdale, Eric Halvorsen and Bruce Mitchell. The Masseys participated in Troop 271's week-long canoe trip down the Pecos River in July Russell and Justin Eccleston's canoe, the Titanic, is still awaiting repairs. Now at home, Russell plans to rest for a few days before plunging into preparations for organizing a new year's OA activities, while John is making preparations for his Eagle Scout service project. Russell and John, who began their scouting careers as Wolf Cubs, would like to hear from any boys or adults who may be interested in scouting. They may be reached at 775-1884.

When asked about their plans for next summer, the Masseys mentioned the possibility of a cruise to the Bahamas, out of the Boy Scouts of America Florida Sea Base, or perhaps a canoe trip in Canada. Of course, there is Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico where Russell could possible renew his acquaintancce with the bear that he met there last year then there are such possibilities as the Maine High Adventure areas Looks as though they may be busy next summer, too. Implementing every step in the" lesson cycle is a crucial part in the agency's reform and imf provement of the quality education provided across the state of Texas. Teachers across the state will be evaluated by the same ment material for the first time this year.
