Two Gulf Star Conference teams triumph By The Associated Press Two Gulf Star Conference members emerged triumphant, but the other three lost to non- league opponents in the first weekend of the 1986 college football season. Nicholls State defeated Youngstown State, 34-17, and Stephen F. Austin drubbed Alcorn State, 28-14. But, on the negative side of the ledger, Nevada-Reno dropped Sam Houston State, 35-7; Arkansas State blanked Northwestern Louisiana, 21-0, and North Texas State shut out Southwest Texas, 7-0.

In Youngstown, Ohio, senior quarterback Doug Hudson tossed three touchdown passes in the first half a first quarter, 41-yard throw to Brian Stropolo and passes of five and six yards to wide receiver Mark Carrier in the second period. The Colonels had a 28-0 lead at half time, and Hudson finished the game with 17 completions in 26 attempts for 254 yards. Carrier caught seven passes for 126 yards. "It wasn't pretty, but it was a win," said Stephen F. Austin Coach Jim Hess in appraising his Lumberjacks' victory at Alcorn.

Todd Whitten passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as SFA amassed 484 yards total offense against Alcorn. Whitten, named the conference's offensive player of the week, had a 32-yard touchdown toss to Drake Williams at the end of the first quarter, then freshman WR Chris Edwards hauled in TD receptions of 33 and 8 yards in the second half to seal the Lumberjacks' opening win. At Reno, Sam Houston State's opening debut in I-AA competition was marred by a 35-7 loss to highly-regarded Nevada-Reno. Nevada-Reno struck on its first possession and rolled to a 21-0 lead before Sam Houston State could get on the board. Senior Vernon Fulbright capped a 77-yard drive with a 12-yard TD run late in the second quarter for the Bearkats' lone score.

Sam Houston's freshman punter, Bart Bradley, totalled 377 yards on eight kicks for a 47.1-yard average to earn GSC defensive player of the week honors. In Jonesboro, Arkansas State gave Northwestern Louisiana its first shutout in 16 games as Boris Whiteside notched a pair, a 5-yard scoring run with 42 seconds before halftime and a 4-yard touchdown plunge in the third quarter. North Texas State handed Southwest Texas a home opening loss with a narrow 7-0 defeat. The Bobcats' Ron Garner rushed for 78 yards while sophomore quarterback David Haass completed 7 of 21 passes for 65 yards to in SWT's opening. Arkansas focuses on passing game FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.

(AP) The numbers are amazingly consistent, almost boring. In 10 of its 11 regular-season games, the University of Arknansas football team threw nine to 12 passes. The exception was 18 against Texas. Quarterback Greg Thomas threw a total of 72 times during the ll games. That was 72 more than he threw the year before.

Naturally, the emphasis this spring was on the pass. "Our No. 1 priority was to get confident with a wide range of passes," said Arkansas Coach Ken Hatfield. "Greg Thomas did a tremen- dous job for us as a sophomore considering he had only a few plays under his belt," Hatfield said. "The thing he did good last year, he ran the option.

The thing he needed the most improvement on was his passing. The previous spring, he spent all his time on option style plays. "We feel good about throwing any down now," Hatfield said. Quarterback coach David Lee says Thomas excels at protecting the ball. Thomas is only one reason the Razorbacks should be more productive on offense.

Running backs James Rouse, Sammy Van Dyke and Joe Johnson are back along with fullbacks Derrick Thomas and Marshall Foreman. Rouse was the Offensive Newcomer of the Year in the Southwest Conference last year after he netted 550 yards and scored nine touchdowns. "Later on in the year, people tried to stop James and that opened things up for the quarterbacks and fullbacks," Hatfield said. "When you're in the everybody keys the tailback. If you're keying the tailback in the flexbone, the fullback will make lot of yardage." Foreman has 1,247 yards and 13 touchdowns during his career.

The Miners hope Coach Bob Stull will be the answer to their miserable 26-134 record since 1970. The team's stunning upset of Brigham Young last year was its only win. After Texas-El Paso finished the year at 1-10, Bill Yung was fired and Stull was brought in. Stull spent spring training getting acquainted with his players, "We don't know where we are as a football team," he said.

"It'll be interesting to see how we come out." Stull, 40, has plenty of experience helping teams chart more succesful courses in his 16 years of college coaching. He joined Don James' staff at Kent State as an assistant in 1971 and also served as recruiting coordinator.
