"The kidney's functioning well," said Dr.

Francis Wright, who performed the transplant. "Sean had no problems at all and Noel had no problems." Sean Elliott, 31, was in the intensive care unit, a routine step, and was expected to move to a regular room Tuesday barring any complications, Wright said at a post-surgery news conference at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital in San Antonio. He could be released next week. "Everything went just tine," Wright said. "He's beginning to be more alert as the anesthesia wears off." Doctors did not remove either of Sean's diseased kidneys, Wright said, adding most kidney transplant recipients don't require removal of the original organs unless there is a threat of some kind of infection.

"His own kidneys are still functional to some extent in that they are still producing some urine and volume but are not capable of carrying out the normal filtration functions," Wright said. Noel Elliott, 32, was in a regular recovery room, Wright said. Urologist Sammy Vick, who removed Noel's left kidney, said he may be able to go home in three to five days. Wright said Noel matched five of the six antigen markers. "It should be an extremely good transplant for Sean," Wright said.

"His brother is a better-than- averagc match. That bodes well, in particular, for the long-term results of the transplant." Doctors have said it will take two to three months before they'll know whether Elliott could try to continue to play basketball, but he has said he hopes to return to the game. Wright said he wouldn't rule it out, although he noted Elliott will be on medication the rest of his life. "It's clearly unprecedented, but he's a very motivated individual," he said. "I'm certainly not going to be the one who tells him he can't play again." Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Elliott's possible return isn't uppermost in his teammates' minds at the moment.

"None of us gives a damn about basketball right now," Popovich said. "If he never played another game, as long as he had his health and the rest of his life, that would be fine. We go forward as if he's not going to be playing for us." Beginning about 8 a.m. Monday, a surgical team began removing one of Noel's kidneys and preparing Sean to receive it, said hospital spokeswoman Palmira Arellano. Elliott needed a transplant because of a condition that slows the kidneys, preventing them from properly filtering waste from the blood.

The cause of the disease focal segmental glomerular sclerosis is not clear. In a statement released Monday morning by the hospital, Noel said: "I am both honored and glad that can be here for my brother in his time of need. My brother has always been there for me and I will always be here for him. The Lord is with us." Rangers overwhelm Cleveland CLEVELAND (AP) Rafael Palmeiro, making a rare pinch- hitting appearance, hit a three- run homer and Ivan Rodriguez homered twice Monday night as the Texas Rangers snapped Cleveland's six-game winning streak with a 13-5 win over the Indians. Palmeiro, pinch hitting for the second time this season, connected for his 31st homer in Texas' five-run seventh inning as the Rangers rallied to beat the Indians in a possible postseason preview between division leaders.

Royce Clayton and Mark McLemore also homered for the Rangers, who posted their 34th come-from-behind victory. Rodriguez hit a solo homer in the first and connected for a two-run shot, his 28th, in the ninth. Mike Munoz (2-1) got the win in relief. Texas' bullpen shut out the Indians over the final five innings and have given up just two runs in their last 24. Richie Sexson had three RBIs for Cleveland.

Carlos Baerga contributed two singles and brought some energy to bored Cleveland fans, but the Indians' bullpen could- n't hold a one-run lead for starter Dave Burba. Baerga, a three-time All-Star second baseman with the Indians from 1990-96, was reacquired on Monday from San Diego to provide veteran experience and exuberance to a team counting down the days until the real season starts in October. Starting at third base and batting eighth, Baerga, received a standing ovation from the Jacobs Field fans some of the same ones who hated to see him traded away in 1996 when he came to bat in the third. Navarro, as well as the other Guadalupe County volleyball teams, begin the season on the road. 1999 volleyball season gets under way tonight All the work in the offsea- son, the practice, the scrimmages and the preparation for each of the Guadalupe County volleyball teams gets tested tonight as the regular season begins.

Tiffani Walker begins her tenvire as Seguin head coach as the Lady Matadors travel to San Antonio to face Highlands. The match represents a chance for the Lady Matadors to gain confidence early in the season, a trait that has not been plentiful in recent years. Meanwhile, Clemens faces a difficult task when the Lady Buffaloes face East Central on the road. For Class 4A Clemens, the match against the Lady Hornets is the first of several matches against 5A opponents. Marion opens the 1999 campaign at Randolph.

The Lady Bulldogs start the season with at least five matches on the road before the home opener against Bastrop. Navarro travels to Luling for its 1999 opener. After this match, Navarro hosts a tournament over the weekend.
