F-3 PITTSBURGH POST-GAZFTTE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1998 TELEVISIONRADIO Paramount Stations has purchased UPN's Pittsburgh affiliate, WNPA syndicated programming, and thus it requires expertise in that area." Cozen previously worked as general manger of Pittsburgh's WPGH, an independent station in Philadelphia and for Warner Bros. Television Distribution. TV NOTES you I was elated with the rating numbers," Cassara said. "But in the long term if we succeed in developing a successful broadcast network, it will benefit the stations. When you start something like this, you don't go straight up to success from ground zero." Cassara said he didn't know what the fate of locally produced programs on WNPA will be.

"We try to be sensitive to the fact that each of our markets is a little different," Cassara said. "We'll have to get a feel for the market, and then decide whether or not to continue with local shows." FCC approval of the WNPA sale is expected by late December or early next year. magazine. He's also a link to the Sunday edition of "60 Minutes," where he was a correspondent from 1975 until becoming evening news anchor in 1981. Simon, 57, has been based in Tel Aviv since 1987 and has contributed stories to "60 Minutes" for the past two years.

Captured during the Gulf War, he spent 40 days in Iraqi prisons and later wrote a book about his experiences. Simon will continue to work in Israel, CBS News spokeswoman Sandra Genelius said. CBS plans to place "60 Minutes II" on its schedule as a midseason replacement series. It's expected to land on either Tuesday or Wednesday night. CBS hasn't announced the show's other correspondents.

CBS sought Chris Wallace, son of "60 Minutes" correspondent Mike Wallace, for the show, but ABC News would not release him from his contract. RENEWED: The weekly PBS newsmagazine "HealthWeek" (6 p.m. Sunday on WQED) has been given a green light for three additional seasons, thanks to a sponsorship commitment from Heinz Philanthropies. The show premiered in May 1997 and is hosted by CBS News correspondent Sharyl At-tkisson and features Dr. Nancy Sny-derman of "Good Morning TV Music Archives) are: Best instrumental theme: Dennis C.

Best use of previously published material: Vonda Shepard for "Searching My Soul" on "Ally McBeal." Best theme revival: "Harlem Nocturne" on "Mike Hammer, Private Eye." Best record release, new material: "Cleveland Rocks" (Rhino) from "Drew Carey." Best record release, historical: "Classic TV Game Show Themes" (Varese Saraband). The five Hall of Fame inductees are composers David Raksin for "Ben Casey," Joseph Mullendore for "Honey West," John Williams for "Lost in Space," Edwin Astley for "The Saint" and John Sebastian for "Welcome Back, Kotter." The awards were for new themes heard in the 1997-98 season. in Detroit, but KDKA will remain his primary responsibility. "Gary's done a terrific job in Pittsburgh, and he is up to the task of additional responsibility," said CBS director of corporate communications Dana McClintock. Having a person in one city overseeing a station in another city isn't unusual for the broadcasting industry.

WPGHWCWB general manager Stu Powell is a regional director for Sinclair Communications. General managers at stations in Kansas City, St Louis, Cincinnati, Rochester and Buffalo report to Powell. "I don't think we've had a similar set-up at any of the 14-owned stations in our group," McClintock said. "It's just the best way to structure this." Cozen said the Detroit station was acquired by CBS a few years ago after an affiliate shuffle left the network without a broadcast outlet in the Motor City. WWJ doesn't have a news division, and there are no plans to start one.

"What you have is a cross between a major network affiliate and an independent station," Cozen said. "It is very heavily driven by From staff and wire reports Paramount Stations Group has confirmed a report in the Post-Gazette that it will acquire Pittsburgh's WNPA, Channel 19, from Venture Technologies Group of Pennsylvania. Pending FCC approval, the acquisition of this UPN affiliate will increase Paramount Station Group's reach to 25.6 percent of the country, including 19 stations. Paramount also has TV stations in major markets that include Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas and Washington. Venture Technologies President Lawrence Rogow said he paid less than $1 million for WNPA when he bought it in a bankruptcy proceeding in 1994.

Paramount is paying $39 million for the station. The deal does not include WN-PA's low-power sister station, WB-PA, Channel 29. Rogow said no decisions have been made regarding the future of WBPA or employees of WNPAWBPA. "We haven't determined specifically what we will be doing with WBPA' Rogow said. "WNPA will be a bigger station, and there will be more employees under Paramount because Paramount has the skill and infrastructure to run bigger organizations." Paramount Stations Group president Tony Cassara agreed.

"We don't have a policy of coming in and firing people," he said. "I think we will probably be adding staff rather than subtracting from it." Cassara said Paramount acquired WNPA because it's in a Top 20 market (Pittsburgh is No. 19 in the country) and a UPN affiliate that will help foster development of the network. UPN made a poor showing with its new fall season. "I'd be less-than-candid if I told RATHER BUSY: CBS has heaped more duties on Dan Rather, putting him and Middle Eastern correspondent Bob Simon on the staff of the new junior edition of "60 Minutes." Rather, 67, will remain anchor of the "CBS Evening News" and "48 Hours," the network's other news SHUFFLE: CBS announced new appointments last week that will see the station manager of WWJ in Detroit report to KDKA-TV general manager Gary Cozen.
