zanies come up with lousy movie By Bruce Blackadar Toronto Star When the riotous squad of anarchists known as the Saturday Night Live bunch exploded joyously on the scene a younger generation believed that here at long last was an outfit that was going to tear the television industry to pieces And initially the zany writers producers and actors succeeded Brilliantly Gilda and John and Dan and Jane and Bill and the other troops had an un tainted image in TV land they chose to revile with wit as sharp as a steak knife all the cigar chew ing supposedly fat middle aged television executives who had been providing the junky fodder of dreary sitcoms inane quiz shows spurious spe cials and gee whiz news programs for decades And so we loved Gilda and John and the rest for their collective effort They became heroes We knew they would never sell out that fight against the often ridiculous censorship that is still a major force in the TV business And above all we knew that they would keep us laughing keep us easy and hip to the absurdities of the Me Decade Well kiss another illusion goodby The hordes of loyal Saturday Night Live fans will be infuriated I suspect by the latest project Mr Mondo Video is meant to be a TV special The cigar chewers in the front offices looked at it and said no way Writer cried foul And so Michael of Saturday Night Live and National Lampoon notoriety cried foul and censor ship and decided to take his project which he wrote and directed to his public who supposedly were panting for the latest project But hear me now go Do not follow your tempta tion to see this disaster which is playing at Uptown II and other theatres The truth is that not only is Mondo Video a prime candidate for worst movie of the year also bad televi sion and it deserved to be censored because stupid beyond redemption joylessly repugnant a rip off of the first magnitude also the most boring unstructured and uriintelligently produced effort ever by the Saturday Night group But the worst crime of all is that Mondo Video has only enough truly funny moments to fill up the time it takes to sell a second rate detergent in a television commercial (I saw Mondo Video at the Towne And Countrye theatre and at least 95 per cent of the audience mostly younger people who have been dedicated to the Saturday Night ethos since grade 9 walked out The night before I was told 56 people had asked for refunds) The film is a spoof on the old Mondo movies of the early which took us to allegedly exotic locations around the world to see slightly kinky things and bare breasted natives dancing under trees The narrator in the Mondo genre always exaggerated the excitement of what was on the screen and was always promising more surprises It was paparazzi journalism at its worst and the fad died out quickly as it deserved to i Smugtone So why is resurrecting it? It might have made an intriguing five minute bit on TV just another segment in the weekly television grind But a 90 minute movie is ludicrous and to compound the stupidity Mondo Video even as interesting as watching the real Mondo movies plays the narrator this time and his juvenile smug tone that hints at the visual disasters which follow Here are some of those disasters: An endlessly prolonged scene about a cat swimming school in Amsterdam A cult jn Cedar Rapids Iowa that worships TV star Jack Lord and starring Dan Ackroyd as a Jim Jones type (complete with shades) leader This might have been funny but witless and the writing is static and forced Dan Ackroyd again (he should be ashamed for lending his talent to this turkey) as a man with webbed toes Dumb man in the street interviews: J)o you believe in capital punishment for elephants? The Loch Ness monster seized in a drug bust An endless series of starlets like Jane Curtin and Margot Kidder and good old Gilda Radner saying why they dislike men The list goes on the late punk rocker Sid Vicious singing My Way These are spliced with commercial inserts just as on TV and frankly I would have preferred to1 have seen actual TV ads than the rest of the movie You can forgive the cigar
