and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. SIDE GLANCES By GLENDA ZUMWALT Throughout towns and villages in the eastern section of the country on July 4, 1877, citizens gathered to celebrate the nation's birthday with ice cream socials, fireworxs, parades and band concerts. Settlers on the far western frontier had little time for such revelry and virtually no access to such luxuries as ice and musical instruments. If the SO or so residents of Del Rio paused for celebration a hundred years ago there is no known record.

There was no nC lnfact there was little in Del Rio except a couple of small store fronts perhaps a dozen one room adobe houses. But things were looking up. There was a new school house. It too was a one room adobe building with an earth floor and a grass roof. That was something to be thankful for.

Also a detachment of calvary had arrived the past September to help protect the settlers from the bands of maurading Indians that had made life so precarious since Dona Paula Losoya Taylor had built the first hacienda in Del Rio in 1862. The soldiers were constructing a fort that summer. Since 1868, when four men, John Perry, Randolph Spafford, James H. Taylor and Jerome Strickland, had formed the San Felipe Del Rio Agricultural, Manufacturing and Irrigation Co. to provide for extensive set- dement of the area, the town had been laid out and the irrigation ditches dug.

Corn and oats grew well in the area. Fishing and hunting were excellent. A handful of ranchers grazed cattle and sheep on the plains. There was no need to starve. Catholics and Protestants could now attend church services on a somewhat regular basis.

Things were indeed looking up, but life was still very hard. In addition to the Indians there were the outlaws who plagued the border towns. And tnen there was the heat, and the lack of medical care and trying by Gill Fox H776vNEA.II\C..T.M U.S.Pal OH; 7-4 to cook on an open fire in a one room house in July. There was no lumber for furniture. Water was plentiful, but it had to be carried in buckets for use in the house.

Supplies were brought from San Antonio, hauled over roads that were in reality nothing more than wagon tracks through the rocks and mesquite and cactus. Yet they had survived, these early settlers. At least most of them. The families had come north from Mexico and south from Canada and west from Tennessee and from other states in the southern and eastern U.S. And they had made for themselves on the isolated frontier new lives.

And wasn't that what the Fourth of July was supposed to be about? Celebrating the birthday of a nation that offered new opportunities? Of course, here on the frontier one needed more than opportunity. Hard work, physical endurance, and just plain luck were necessary to survival. No doubt in Del Rio on that Fourth of July 100 years ago at No doubt in Del Rio on that Fourth of July 100 years ago at least one person paused in the midst of his daily routine to consider the significance of the date and significance of what he was attempting here. Grateful for the opportunity, proud of his work and his ability to endure, perhaps he paused to pray for a little more luck and felt renewed hope. He was right to hope.

If he looked about him he would notice not only the new school and the troops, but the two story house under construction in the town. And he might recall that dancing lessons were now being offered to young ladies in the community. The social amen- tities would do much to soften the harshness of frontier existence. There was also hope for economic survival. Del Rio was now the supply depot for forts on the south-western border.

Even the Mexican troops in some of the northern provinces were to rely on Del Rio for supplies. And the railroads were building west. Surely the tracks would pass through Del Rio. He was right to hope and struggle onward for within ten years Del Rio was no longer a crude village perched precariously on the frontier. Instead it was a thriving young city and he who had endured could celebrate the Fourth with many neighbors and fireworks and ice cream and perhaps a band concert in the park.
