thousands of people have been killed, and there have been looting and burning. Much of this has grown out of the unhannv circumstance that many Mos lems nad been living in territory which was awarded to the Hindu Dominion of India, and manv Hindus were caught within Mos ovin, Fav, Timmers, Jones, wir-tanen, Whipple, Reinmuth, Bester IV, and Encke. This list of names alone will probably bring on a mild scare to any who perennially thrive on fear of comets. Comet Encke, which now is only slightly too dim for naked-eye visibility, has long been known. In 1818 Pons discovered a faint comet.

The noted German astronomer Encke (two syllables) suspected this was the same one that had been seen in 1786, 1795 and 1805. He calculated their orbits and found they were different returns of the same one. It comes to perihelion (position nearest the sun) once every 3.3 years, the shortest period of any known comet. Compared with Halley's comet, which has a period of about 75 years, this one seems quite a frequent visitor. A Narrow Miss Encke tried to attach the name of Pons to this comet, but his contempories thought otherwise.

He predicted it would again be at perihelion on May 24, 1822, and even named the hour. He missed it by only three hours. Comet Encke has long been a puzzle to astronomers in that when it is in the vicinity of the lem Pakistan. Civil War Near The latest untoward development, however the invasion of the great princely state of Kashmir by Moslem tribesmen from Oregon's New Governor Inasmuch as all Oregon is interested in our new governor, John H. Hall, especially the capital city where he is to reside, we reproduce the following from the independent pen of William M.

Tugman, brilliant editor of the Eugene Register-Guard, quite the best summary yet published "Naturally, many people want to know 'what kind of person' is this John Hall who now becomes governor of Oregon. The bare biographical outlines never define any man. Time, place and circumstances of birth may account for some postures and predelictions. As for instance: John Hubert Hall is a lawyer-politician and the son of a lawyer-politician. His father, John Hubert Hall, was born at Gresham.

Oregon, in 1854 and also served in the state legislature. Although not admitted to the bar till age 43, he rose to be United States district attorney. "Does that tell you something? All right, here's a little more background: Young John Hubert was the only boy in the family. He had The Fireside Pulpit Reverend George H. Swift Rector, St.

The danger lies in these tangled fers at Lick Observatory, and will reach perihelion November 26. After the moon gets out of the morning sky, comet Encke should easily be picked up with good field glasses.

On the morning of November 7 it will rise almost due east three hours before sunrise; November 15, a little south of east about two hours before the sun and at the same time as the bright star Spica, which will be 10 degrees on a level to its right. Wheat May Be Trucked to West Spokane, Nov. 1 P) Whether wheat in Inland Empire elevators can be moved by truck to west coast ports will be investigated by the Pacific Northwest Grain Dealers' association at the request of Commodity Credit corporation officials in Portland. Pete Stallcop, managing secretary of the dealers' associaiton, said CCC officials estimated bushels of Inland Empire wheat would be needed within 30 days to meet commitments for overseas grain shipments. The investigation of trucking facilities was asked because of a box car shortage.

What Were the Saints Like? In our country we set aside certain days to honor our great heroes. After a century or so, only those so honored are remembered by the great mass of people. The other thousands of patriots who have not rated a holiday are forgotten. The church, too, has set aside certain days to remember early Christian heroes andS the faith for which thev livedi None ot the saints we read between the dominions." The resistance in recent years seems to be lessening. During the past time on the northwest frontier and rode with several thousand British troops when they round have their faith and fortitude. None of them was without the tendency to evil that we possess. None of them was shielded from the temptations which beset us. They were, in fact quite ordinary men and women who had the courage of their convictions, attained to a high level of spirituality, and were good for something positive and constructive.

I do not know the author of this question and its answer, but most of us can agree with its sentiment: "Why were the saints, 'saints'? Because they were were cheerful when it was diffi an allegation denied by the Pak ed up and interned 600 tribes out, colorless, weak looking fig istan government. Very well, maybe some of these things signify: For many years he has officed with Jay Bowerman, and if you know who Jay Bowerman is and the potent influence he has exercised in practical politics, that may mean something. Jay was a friend of Hall's father in the old days. And it is rather a coincidence that Mr.

Bowerman was governor of Oregon from June 17, 1910, to January 8, 1911, under circumstances rather similar to those which have marie Hall governor. (When George Chamberlain was elected in the United Stales senate, Frank Benson moved tip to governor from secretary of state, but when he was stricken in June, 1910, the governorship passed to Bowerman who was president of the senate). "Okay, so our new governor will likely 'listen to Nothing new in that. Most of our republican governors have listened to Bowerman, especially Julius Meier. Mr.

Bowerman is no dreamy 'idealist' but he wears the political accolade 'his word is good and he plays it However, don't get the idea that Hall will lean on Bowerman or anybody else. He will have plenty of ideas of his own, and judging by his legislative record, he is capable of skillful and even forceful leadership. "In what direction? Well, at that point, we will take you to one of Governor Hall's severest critics (though probably not best friend) C. C. Chapman, of The Oregon Voter.

Crawford, the sage of Salem, is working on an interesting job, that of making an index for Doc Steiner's scrapbook. Lee's old scrapbook is one of the most interesting of its kind around here. As everyone knows, Lee was more active in public life from the nineties down to a few years ago than possibly any other Oregonian, and he has kept the record in a scrapbook filled, not only with clippings, but correspondence from virtually all of the prominent Oregonians during that period.

His scrapbook is a mine of information and its indexing an important job. This document in due course should be preserved in some such permanent place as the state library. Has Hall been any more selfish in his approach to public problems than the average legislator? "We have never known any politician (or any human being) who could be completely 'objective' and we have never known a legislator who wasn't pretty touchy on any matter affecting his bread-and-butter.
