WELL, THEN STOP and have a TALK TELL US what you want, and we'll GET IT FOR let's see) Might even make It worth your while with a free car! YES, SIR! (UM, AH That is tomorrow.) Bye Now! ZEEB'S USED CABS 2325 Fairgrounds Road Operations Greaseball Twelve army vehicles of the test convoy that will visit Salem September 23 as they make their way norm in a Journey that takes them from tht extreme heat of the Mojave desert in to the extreme cold of Alaska. The convoy, testing lubricants and tires and two types of heaters, left Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, August 2, bound for California, then will come north. 4b i Army Test Convoy Here On Journey Salem Is slated for a visit September 23 by a convoy of 14 army vehicles making a journey 5000 more than necessary to circle the world at the equator through 24 itates and Alaska.

The convoy, termed "Operation Greaseball," is testing six Grain Futures Show Strength Chicago, Aug. Grain futures were strong today, although profit-taking frequently cut into the best advances. Stock Trading Year's Slowest New York, Aug. 3 The stock market loafed alonK in a fractional price range today. Gains and losses were about evenly distributed, with the railroad section doing a shade better than other groups.

The trading pace was one of the year's slowest. Turnover for the full session headed for around 700,000 shares, or about even with yesterday. News from Washington and broad served only to induce a wary note Into market activity. Corporation newt was more or less ignored. Marked down were Republic Steel, Firestone Tire, Interna- ional Harvester, Dow Chemical, Du Pont, International Paper, and Kennecott Copper.

A trifle higher at one time another were U.S. Steel, Woolworth, Consolidated Edison, Anaconda Copper, Southern Railway, Baltimore Ohio, and Santa Fe. Bonds moved narrowly while some U.S. governments tended to slip. Hope to Adjourn ttjonunued irom Page 1 Sen.

Richard B. Russell leader of the Dixie filr-buster, told a reporter there al- ready has been considerable discussion of such a compromise In the poll tax fight. He said it would be acceptable to states' rights southerners. Meanwhile, House Republican Leader Charles A. Halleck made the flat prediction that the Saturday adjournment goal would be met.

Taft indicated that chances are good. Senate and house leaders all but buried President Truman's sweeping anti-inflation program at a meeting late yesterday. Here's the way those attend ing the leadership conference said the program shapes up: 1. Inflation A bill tighten ing up on credit by boosting bank reserve requirements will be introduced in the house to morrow and may come to a vote after two days of debate. The senate, too, will act promptly on a similar measure.

2. Housing The house ver sion of the long-range housing bill, without the controversial public housing slum clearance features is pretty sure of final action before quitting time, 3. Civil rights The senate GOP policy committee will decide today "whether and when" to end the apparently futile republican effort to pass the anti-poll tax bill. 4. UN loan The house for eign affairs committee was set to okay a $65,000,000 loan for construction of United Nations headquarters in New York.

Slated communication, pjn. 185 types of experimental lubri-; cants and three types of experimental tires under temper-ated, desert and arctic climatic cond itions a temperature range of degrees from the expected 125 of the desert to the 65 degrees below in Alaska. Also tested will be two types of experimental heaters. One Is to facilitate the starting of vehicle engines In sub-zero tern" peratures, the other for the comfort of the operator of the vehicle. The heaters have been tested twice before in Alaska.

Desert First Objective Making the trip will be four army officers and 24 enlisted men from Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, all of whom left that place August 2, with Baltimore, the first city to be visited. First objective of the convoy for the test will be the Mojave desert in California. While the vehicles are there extensive tests will be conducted, including 3000 miles of driving through the desert to test both lubricants and tires when subjected to intense desert heat. Five hundred miles will be driven over trackless uncharted desert terrain, using only compass and speedometers. En route north the convoy comes up through California, through Oregon and as far north in Washington as Seat-le, from where the vehicles move eastward until they reach Great Falls, Mont.

From that point they move northward to ward Fairbanks, Alaska, Cover all Alaska In Alaska the vehicles will travel over the entire Alaskan peninsula as far as terrain permits, seeking the coldest areas designated by the air force weather stations. In the three months in Alaska the convoy will drive between 10 and 15 thousand miles. During February, 1949, the vehicles return to the United States and to the Aberdeen Proving Ground through Great Falls, Omaha, Chicago; Colum bus, and Pittsburgh, Pa. Composed of 12 two-and-a- half-ton cargo trucks, four of which have been converted Into van-type bodies of "knockdown" construction for arctic use, a one-ton commercial type vehicle and one three-quarter ton field ambulance, the convoy will be self-sufficient during the entire journey as far as maintenance of vehicles and supply of lubricants are concerned. Sewer Project (Continued irom Page i At the same meeting the pur chase of certain equipment, Including a dragline, was author ized at an estimated cost of 000. The drag line has arrived has been tested out and works perfectly, City Engineer Davis said Tuesday. A small amount of right of way for the line has been cleared. Both Franzen and Davis said the demand for both cement and steel is excessive. One reason for the cement shortage is the Dorena dam project, for which a special type of cement is used Cement plants supplying the material have found it neces sary to close down and alter the plants to make the special tvoi of material.

The main sources of cement Oregon are the Os wego plant, one at Lime, Ore, and two in southern Oregon. The steel scarcity also has re suited in an advance of about $10 a ton. Some estimates place the increase at $15 a ton. Regardless of the increase in prices dealers take a very pessimistic view of the prospect for increased supply.
