Decatur, Illinois, Sunday, August 2, 1939. DECATUR SUNDAY HERALD AND REVIEW 42 TV Key College Found Dialect Aided Actor Weaver in Landing 'Chester Role Program Previews its first showing. 6:30. p. m.

By Jams Bacon Of The Associated Press Hollywood, Aug. 1 Bfng Crosby was lounging in his dressing room not long ago, when the director called rehearsal. "Coming, Mr. Dillon," replied Bing in a twang so unmistakable that it broke up everybody on the set. Bing is a member of that vast army of Chester imitators.

Chester of is Dennis Weaver, the co-star with James Amess on "Gunsmoke," TV's perennial top-rate show. And Chester's twang is the favorite kidding-around dialect among such Hollywood names as Crosby, Frank- Sinatra and' Dean Martin. In person, Dennis does not talk like Chester. "When I was at the University of Oklahoma," he savs, there was some guy there who came from one of those lost counties in the state who talked exactly like Chester. I used to mimic him at parties and it ways went over Dig.

"When I went to New York to study at the actor's studio, I could break 'up the subway just by going into that dialect. But it was accidental how he came use it on "Gunsmoke." When Weaver was asked to test for the TV series, he thought he was up for the part of Mu-shal Matt Dillon. "I figured Chester was for someone like Oabbv Haves or Sunday's 3 it: cva ft 5 ll.nn-W'V'-.X-l. 4 'I MHHM Chester's Ltg Isn't Really Stiff Sunday's Television Ch 17. WTVP.

Much of it is de voted to prison "bull sessions" where remarks from the inmates like "My father says he hopes thev send me home in a box" and "The only time society is interested is when they're thrown in jail themselves," illustrate the need for more trained psychia trists and social workers in our penal institutions. 5:30 p. WOA. CHET HUNTLEY RE PORTING. "Steel Town." Huntley looks at Can', Indiana, (steel town) in the quiet grip of the current strike.

Against a background of loan companies willing to extend credit, pickets playing cards and lis tening to TV and talking about fishing. A vivid contrast is of fered to the conditions surround ing the Memorial Day massacre of 1937 (described by two vet erans of that strike). Over-all picture of the program seems to refute the old "class warfare" premise in his era of labor-management relations. 5:30 p. m.

WICS. SUSPICION. "Protege." Her career plans suf fer a severe jolt when her pro tege gets carried awav bv her new ambition, supporting cast, headed by Phyllis- Love, William Shatner and Jack Klugman, is exceptionally good, and production and camera work are in the best Hollywood tradition. Now I eat organically grown vegetables all the time and never felt better." He also gave up smoking and drinking at the same time. But he explains: "Oh, I'll take an occasional drink now and then like the night I won an Emmy just to keep me from becoming a complete fanatic." The vegetarian diet has proved embarrassing on several occasions. "Everytime I appear in Texas or Kansas, someone wants to throw a barbecue for me."
