a 1 I I a a a a a a a THE TORONTO STAR, July 16, 1975 Gunman convicted of murdering unborn fetuses CAMDEN, N.J. (UPI) A Camden man -who shot and wounded a pregnant woman during a holdup here last March -was convicted yesterday of murdering twin fetuses. The verdict was returned against Winfield Anderson, 24, charged with firing a shot which wounded Nikki Spearman of Camden who was pregnant at the time. She was taken to a hospital, where her twin babies were born prematurely. One of them, struck in the spine by a bullet, died shortly after birth.

The other survived 15 hours. Anderson was found guilty of murder and eight other counts, including assault with intent to kill and possession of a weapon. 3 concerts scheduled for park Three concerts are planned for the new bandstand in St. James Park, King St. at Jarvis on July 30, Aug.

6 and Aug. 13. The 12.15 p.m. concerts are sponsored by the city's parks and recreations department and the Toronto Musicians' Association. Immediately after the jury, which began pondering the evidence at 3:17 p.m.

Monday, returned its verdict shortly after 2 p.m., defence attorney Carl Taraschi called for a roll call of individual jurors. Anderson, sitting tensely at the defence table, suddenly stood and asked a court attendant to take him out of the courtroom, shouting, "take me upstairs, I don't want to hear it." Judge Leon Wingate asked the attendant escort Anderson out, while six men and six women were polled individually. The indictment said Anderson went to the home of Miss Spearman to purchase marijuana from her boy friend, but pulled out, gun and fired one shot after demanding the drug and cash. The trial centred on whether or not someone can be murdered before he is born. Wingate ruled in effect Monday that an unborn fetus can be the victim of murder and rejected a defence motion to throw out the murder charges.

Wingate said of his decision: "I may find out some day from somebody above me I am wrong. But that's the way I feel now." Anderson faces a mandatory life sentence. WITH KNIFE, FORK, SPOON SHE DUG OUT OF PRISON PLEASANTON, Calif. (Reuter) A woman escaped from a jail farm near here using a knife, fork and spoon, authorities said yesterday. Officials at the Santa Rita Jail said that Curtricia Miles, 23, of Oakland, who was serving a jail term for murdering another woman, had used the utensils to make an opening in the floorboards of her cell.

She concealed the hole by placing her cot above it. then escaped through the hole and crawled about 20 feet under the prison building, which is set on posts about two feet high, officials said. She then scaled a seven-foot high wooden fence topped with barbed wire.
