Li- Feb. 13, 1986 Frank Herbert, author of sci-fi best sellers, dies MADISON, Wis. (AP) Sciencefiction novelist Frank Herbert, whose best-selling "Dune" told of a harsh desert planet and its people, the intrigues of an interplanetary empire, and a mysterious spice that made a young duke able to see the future, has died at the age of 65. Herbert, of Mercer Island, discovered late last year that he had cancer and died Tuesday in the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. "Dune," Herbert's best-known novel, has been translated into 14 languages and has sold more than 12 million copies since it was published in 1965.

It was the first book in what began as a trilogy and grew to six novels, and became a cult favorite. "Dune," another name for the fictional planet Arrakis, is the focus of galactic battle and intrigue because it is the source of a hallucinogenic spice, produced by a giant desert worm, that prolongs life and is essential to space navigation. The spice made the young duke Paul Atreides able to see the future and he became "God Emperor of another title in the series. His first novel, "Dragon in the Sea," was published in 1955. "Dune" was rejected by 20 publishers before one accepted it.

In all, he wrote more than two dozen books. Herbert's latest "Dune" novel, "Chapterhouse: Dune," hit the bestseller list as soon as it was published last year. He also worked on two movies. "Dune" was made into a leased in late 1984. But despite high expectations, ornate sets and a big- Frank Herbert budget cast that included rock star Sting, the movie drew mostly bad reviews.

Papers also had been signed Tuesday to make Herbert's novel "Green Brain" into a movie. Herbert, born in Tacoma, lied about his age in order to get his first newspaper job, on the Glendale Star in 1939. He also worked for the old Seattle Star, the Oregon Statesman, and was a writer and editor for the San Francisco Examiner's "California Living" magazine. He was the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's education writer from 1969 to 1972, when he quit to write novels. Frank Gentile, was fire captain Frank G.

He was a member of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters Local 1, and after his retirement he served on the union's pension board. He was secretarytreasurer and a trustee of the VeterFiremen Association of Pittsburgh for the past 10 years. He was a district committeman in the 3rd District of the 8th Ward, representing the Democratic Party for the past 25 years. He was a 1941 graduate of Central Catholic High School and a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy on several aircraft carriers. He was a member the police and firemen's Holy Name Society, and Catholic War Veteran's Post 735.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame Athletic Association of Bloomfield in 1978. He is survived by his wife, Rita; two sons, Frank G. Jr. and Vincent both of Pittsburgh; a daughter Vinessa G. Turpin of Bloomfield; and two grandchildren.

Girls tell of repeated sexual abuse By Carole Patton Smith Post-Gazette Staff Writer Two young girls fidgeted in their seats and played with microphone yesterday as they told a jury about sexual abuses they suffered from their mother and her boyfriend. A 7-year-old girl said her mother performed sex acts on her and forced the girl to perform them on the mother. She also testified in Common Pleas Court that she was sexually abused by her mother's live-in boyfriend and his brother. According to the girl, the brother also abused her individually and as part of a group that included her 6- year-old sister and their 5-year-old friend. The girl said she never told her mother about the assaults because the boyfriend told her not to.

"Don't tell those bad things that happened," she recalled the boyfriend saying. Under questioning by Assistant District Attorney Anthony Krastek, the girl said the assaults happened while her mother was out at bingo games. She said her mother assaulted her when the boyfriend was at a bar. The 6-year-old girl testified that she was sexually abused by her mother, the boyfriend and his brother. The girls, along with their year-old brother, were removed by police from the mother's Tarentum home in May.

The three adults were charged by county sex assault detectives in November. Because it is the policy of the Post-Gazette to protect the identities of sexual assault victims, the names of the three adults will remain anonymous. To reveal the names of the adults would reveal the names of the children involved. The three adults went on trial yesterday before Judge Robert E. Dauer.

The mother, 25, is charged with two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and two counts of indecent assault. Her boyfriend, 33, is charged with two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, one count of statutory rape and three counts of corruption of minors. One simple assault charge against him was dropped. The brother, aged 34, of Arnold, is charged with one count of indecent assault. In May 1984, the 6-year-old told her teacher, Ann Press, that "her daddy touched her in bed." Press said she talked to the mother about it, but the mother said she never left the boyfriend alone with the children.

In May 1985, the 6-year-old again told her teacher about abuses.
