with the Washington Redskins if as expec ted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers release him next month The Redskins have said they will sign a veteran wide receiver and Harper apparently is their first choice Team officials are reluctant to comment because Harper still belongs to the Buccaneers If the Redskins strike a deal with Harper which appears likely he would compete with Henry El lard for the starting spot opposite Michael Westbrook Harper also would provide depth to a receiving corps mat was depleted by injuries last season when Westbrook and Leslie Shepherd missed all or parts of 11 games Westbrook and Shepherd are ex pected to be healthy for training camp but their histories of injury prompted coach Norv Turner and general manager Charley Casserly to acquire some insurance They drafted Texas speedster Al bert Connell in April Now it ap pears they will sign Harper The Dallas Cowboys and Phila delphia Eagles also have expressed an interest in Harper However the Cowboys likely will acquire An thony Miller who probably will be released by the Denver Broncos in early June PRO BOWL The National ootball League said considering moving the Pro Bowl to Orlando la from Honolulu after playing the All Star game in Hawaii since 1979 The NL is entering the final year of a 19 year contract with Honolulu and Orlando officials are trying to at least get the all star game in alternating years beginning in 1999 A shift of the game to Orlando would put it among several re sorts including Walt Disney Disney World Disney recently NL NOTES built a sports complex near its re sort JACKE SNUBBED: ormer Green Bay Packers kicker Chris Jacke was not invited to attend a gathering at the White House next week for the Super Bowl winners the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported The Packers also did not invite Jacke to the party next month in Green Bay where they will re ceive their Super Bowl rings unbelievable absolutely said Steve Weinberg agent called the Packers to find out what the plans were for the trip Tuesday and he was told he was not Jacke an unrestricted free agent was let go last month when the Packers chose Brett Conway in the third round of the NL draft AVRE NEGOTIATING: Brett agent says he expects his client to attend the Green Bay minicamp next month and training camp in July even if he have a new contract in hand Two news reports last week suggested the two time MVP quarterback might sit out in pro test of not having a new deal despite more than a year of nego tiations ESPN reported that he is con sidering skipping the voluntary minicamp and a Milwaukee tele vision station cited sources close to avre as saying he also might not report when training camp begins in July if he have a new deal by then RAIDERS SIGN HOLMES: The Oakland Raiders who have spent much of the off season stockpiling offensive linemen added another Saturday by signing free agent Lester Holmes Man of the year: Green has earned it with Skins Redskins defensive back Darrell Green has always followed the straight and narrow By Thomas George NY Times News Service ASHBURN Va He has never had a beer Never And Darrell Green says too that in his 37 years of life he has never tasted wine Never sipped bourbon Never smoked a cigarette Never puffed pot Never took any illegal drug Never He said he has never cheated with an other woman during 12 years of marriage to his wife Jewell He never forgets his three children daughters Jerrell 10 and Joi 7 and son Jared 8 He never forgets his charitable youth foundation He never forgets his commitment to his religion In 14 pro football seasons Darrell Green has never played a down for any team other than the Washington Redskins There may never have been a pro foot ball player who at age 37 signed a five year contract But Darrell Green did a month ago and on the same day ran a team best time of 43 seconds in the 40 yard sprint If he keeps this up if he finishes the terms of this deal Green already one of the oldest players in the National ootball League will be 41 in the year 2001 playing cornerback against receivers half his age and still running past them Imagine that ourteen seasons ago skeptics said he see our young society with such a lack of respect I just get a 10 year old calling me Darrell Green instead of Mr Green I like the earrings and the tattoos I like the lack of love and understanding And crept right into the locker room and it is not just the players the coaches the Darrell Green would never make it in the nro same: too small too slight so returning punts they were certain was his only chance for glory He was 5 feet 8 inches 173 pounds then He weighs 184 pounds now Eleven more pounds in 14 seasons Two Super Bowl rings in that span too And six Pro Bowls (including last season) and 43 career interceptions (second among active play ers) Green is 15 games short of breaking the record for most games played (Monte Coleman is the leader with 216) Last year Green won the coveted NL man of the year award for his combination of on the field excellence and off the field service Won the Bart Starr Award for humanitarianism too Darrell Green bom in Houston bred here as a Washington Redskin was bom to run toward achievement and to never stop running few years ago I ran a 415 time in the 40 my best ever and last month some people clocked me at he said six years ago I was supposed to have lost a step that was supposed to be the case last year I have never run as fast as I can the way I look at it always expecting to run faster to do more to be responsible to my gift from God the NL man of the year was the biggest award ever gotten because you work for 15 years in one community In it as living preparing to die just like as a player you play preparing to retire And what that award did was it validated all of my work It said: had the right Not great but taken the right road But that award has no period behind it There is no stop sign there I must keep on keeping Darrell Green sit? Never Last riday he met with Pepsi to help create another charity event here for youth He later spoke at Jackson Road Elementary School in Silver Spring Md challenging youngsters to make their par ents and teachers their role models and heroes the managers of their dreams how you win the Super Bowl of your he said Afterward there were more meetings and more business and more efforts by Green through his foundation and life cen ter in northwest Washington to change lives I first came to the Redskins I had a healthy fear and respect for every one in the organization around Green said a player was having a child we were there When there was a birthday we threw birthday parties It was family I see the smelly rude and crude creeping into pro sports just like it is in society see our young society with such a lack of respect I just get a 10 year old calling me Darrell Green instead of Mr Green I like the earrings and the tattoos I like the lack of love and understanding And crept right into the locker room and it is not just the players the coaches the Darrell Green has opinions He will tell you about them Some of his peers see him as too preachy Some of his teammates view him as too sanctimonious Those who truly know him understand him well is a said Tim Johnson a teammate for six seasons and now a Cin cinnati Bengal sets a standard above a standard He goes to the edge all out There is a tough hard competitive side to Darrell But there is a real soft side only those the closest to him have seen He is not afraid to cry over the three things that mean the most to him: his relationship to Jesus Christ his family and his founda tion He has a heart for things that In 1991 Green was part of a champion ship team Only two seasons later he was part of a 3 13 team The Redskins gave Green a $22 million signing bonus and will pay him $5 million in the first two years of his new contract has handled success as well as adversity and he has had great belief in what we are said Norv Turner entering his fourth year as the coach you were talking about your average 37 year old player no you do the deal we just did But if I was to show you film of his performance last season and told you he was 28 years old say one of the top two or three cornerbacks in the league secure him for the have no doubt he can play at this level for at least another two years After that who knows? But I be the one to doubt him This guy his talent and character? This is what you build your team In Washington as a Redskin Green said he has met the two most important people in his life: his wife Jewell and his pastor Brett uller who Green said me around the neck and grabbed me and challenged me on a road where I follow the Now Green has become synonymous with the Redskins a player whose No 28 jersey will most likely be retired when he does a player with maybe more Pro Bowls and championships in him A rare gifted cornerback on his way to the Hall of ame never played a game in the pros except for the Washington Green said beaming never sat down with another coach from another team and talked about playing anywhere else They said I was too small at first Then they said I was too old I can say I was there And I am here And that is all that anyone could After early setback she's now proactive 46 Though she in the Boston Marathon wheelchair racer Jean Driscoll generally accomplishes what she sets out to do By Carolyn Thornton Providence Journal Bulletin SOUTH KINGSTOWN RI A little less than four miles lay between Jean Driscoll and another wheelchair victory at the Boston Mara thon when her tire got caught in trolley tracks flipping her upside down Although as she now calls it ruined chances for a record eight consecutive Boston wins she managed to sal vage a second place finish flat tire and all Driscoll says the memory but she feels fortunate that she escaped with little more than a couple of elbow scrapes The incident says Driscoll also served to educate spectators about the risks of wheelchair racing that same optimism that has propelled Driscoll 30 of Champaign Ill into world prominence on the wheelchair racing circuit Her success on the race course and beyond is based on an aphorism: is being sure of what you hope for certain of what you cannot 4 see The University of Rhode Island presented Driscoll recently with an honorary doctorate Mark Rowinski director of the Physical Therapy Program which recommended the award says it was given view of most outstanding accomplishments in the field of sport and for the inspiration she offers to others in overcoming challenges to the human spirit Driscoll was born with spina bifida a congen ital birth defect After jolting that she shed many tears at the hands of physical Driscoll offered advice to the 19 graduates of the Physical Therapy Program about tn rprpivp their of science degrees: of the biggest lessons learned in my lifetime is that the biggest limitations we have in life are those that we place on ourselves or those that we allow others to place on Driscoll says it always been easy She flunked out her first yearat the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Then she was recruited to play wheelchair basketball at the University of Illinois She accepted and says now it was the best move she ever made of a sudden I realized there were people in (wheel)chairs going after PhDs and getting married So I started to set goals and be a little more Driscoll earned a of arts in speech communication and a of science in rehabilitation administration both honors felt as good as winning Athletically Driscoll has dominated wheelchair racing for the past seven years In addition to holding the world record in the marathon at 1 hour 34 minutes she has 85 national and international track and road victo ries including the seven at Boston and nine at the Lilac Bloomsday 12K in Spokane Wash Driscoll owns two Olympic silver medals as well as three gold two silver and three bronze Paralympic medals In 1991 she was named the Sports oundation Amateur Sports woman of the Year look at somebody in a wheelchair and shake their head and say know how people do it I know how somebody could live life in a But the way I like to explain it is my chair is like a pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses Once a person puts on their glasses in the morning they forget about them throughout the day They go around thinking about how they have to go through another day of nearsightedness the way it is with my chair I just think about vSS JEJJ TREASURE BOX 855 902 businessmen PREER VIDEO NEWS VIDEO ARCADE VIDEOS NOVELTIC MAGAZINES CD ROM 1 205 Bessemer 373 9849 Open 24 Hours Hours of Operation Mon Sat 1 1am 2 am I I Sun 4pm 2am COME JOIN OVER 150 NORTH MOST BEAUTIUL WOMEN OR THE BEST IN ADULT ENTERTAINMENT!
