Decatur, Illinois, Thursday, April 29, 1965. THE DhCA : v ..iy W Herman Conserving Fred Munster ace Hides Public Image By Erskine Johnson Of TV Scout Hollywood, April 29 Fred Gwynne or the Jolly Green Giant as he is known at Universal City because of his green Herman Munster makeup and towering height couldn't be happer about his TV role as the Big Daddy of this season's spook shows. Herman, as he figures it, is conserving the career of Fred Gwynne. Herman's make - up is so good that Fred Gwynne has all but disappeared and that's a better trick than any so far on "Bewitched." He says his recent appearance on "The Danny Kaye Show" proved his point. In the early part of the show, he cavorted with Danny in make - up as Herman. Later he appeared as himselt, play ing a director in a skit with ; Danny. i Next day a friend told him;! about overhearing a pair of;E strangers talking about the ! Kaye show. One commented about seeing Herman Munster. The second said he missed Herman, having tuned in late, then asked his friend: "Who was that fellow who didj the director bit with Danny?" E There was added proof of his point. Fred and Al Lewis, who plays Grandpa Munster, went to a basketball game in Los An geles recently. Even without! I make - up, Lewis was mobbed e by a group of teen-agers with autograph books who recogniz- ed him as Grandpa. If. After standing by, unrecog-! nized, Gwynne chided Lewis: ji "Why do you use make-up, E anyway? i After his hit in "Car 54 1 Where Are You?", Gwynne says; he was eager to play something different from Sgt. Muldoon. Hell jumped at the Munster role. "After all," he says, "televis-! ion doesnt offer much variety doctors, lawyers, private -s eyes. I figured the show would be a hit. When I complained about a few things to Nat Hik I en (who created "Car 54" and became Gwynne's idol), he stopped me with the observa tion: "Stop worrying. The show works it works.' " Fred is hoping for a line "so we won't look monkeys in funny clothes pull ed in from left field." Gwynne has had only five days vacation in the eight months since be started the series, and his wife, especially, is concerned about his health. But if anything keeps him going, it is his sense of humor. He admits he's tired "But," he laughs, "I'm real- Hy very curious to see if I'D story I make the end of the first sea-li kelson."
