Atlanta (AP) There is the question of whether Muhammad Ali has retained the speed and condition he had when he ruled the boxing world.

But, there is no doubt he still has his confidence and wice. The fight at the 5.000-seat Atlanta Municipal Auditorium will be Ali's first since he was stripped of his title after being convicted in 1967 of refusing induction into the Army. And, although the sport's governing bodies recognize Joe Frazier as champion, there are some holdout observers who feel Monday's fight is the first real title fight in more than three years. One of those is Quarry, who lost to Frazier by a seven-round knockout. "He's (Ali) never lost the title in the ring," said Quarry.

"I'm the retired champ; Joe Frazier's the active, recognized champion," said Ali, who hasn't fought since he knocked out' Zora Folley in seven rounds March 22, 1967. But the long layoff for Ali, the In Atlanta A Curiosity By Arthur Daley (c) 1970 New York Times Atlanta "When I'm gene, boxing will be nothing again." So said a heavyweight champion whose preference for the name of Muhammad Ali cannot obscure the fact that his legal name still is Cassius Marcellus Clay, a name that rings with the regal sound of triumphant trumpets. For more than three years Cassius was gone and boxing had faded toward the nqthingness that he had predicted for it. Now he is back and the fist cuffing business has been revivified with the jolting supercharge of his electrifying presence. In this one-time bastion of the Confederacy the ring-rusty Clay will trade punches with rust-free Jerry Quarry Monday night in the most significant scrap this crumby sport has had since Cassius exposed the empty shell of that fraudulent frightener, Sonny Liston.

This is a fight that has stirred emotions throughout the country and interest in the outcome is enormous. Virtually no one feels neutral Cassius. As a matter of fact, few ever did, even in the old days when his vainglorious boasting irritated a lot of people who wanted to see him get his block knocked off. Now they feel the same for different reasons. For others it has become an anti-war or pro-Black symbol, or both, unjustly persecuted by i establishment.

For most folks, though, interest in this fight cannot be attributed to esoteric reasons. It rests on that solid fundamental, curiosity. How deep is the erosion that the gnawing fingers of time have taken of Clay's skills? This is the key to the entire proceeding. It is three and a half GIVE US 9 big tiles tone sq. yd.) in every carry $3.06 per Sq.

(AP) Fourth ranked Nebraska stunned Oklahoma State with a 41-point scoring barrage in the first half Saturday and rolled to a 65 to 31 triumph in a Big Eight football scoring spectacular before the second largest crowd in Memorial Stadium's history, 67,822. The point total was the largest for a Nebraska team since the 1922 Cornhuskers blanked South Dakota, 66-0. The most spectacular score in a wild afternoon was engineered by Oklahoma State's Dick Graham, a 5 foot 9, 172 pound junior, who took the game's first Nebraska kickoff and galloped 98 yards.

A conversion kick by Uwe Pruss put the Cowboys momentarily ahead, 7-6. with the game 6V4 minutes old. But Nebraska commanded thereafter. Nebraska's sophomore Johnny Rodgers took a cue from Graham and scored himself on a 66-yard punt return in the second quarter. Other Nebraska touchdowns included 37 and 73 yard pass interceptions, and touchdown aerials of 40, 35 and 26 yards.

There has been some reluctance by fight fans to pay $100 to see Ali in the Municipal Auditorium. The tickets are scaled from $15 to $100 and there still are some $100 to be sold.

But the live gate revenue is just a drop in the bucket com pared to what the promoters expect to gain from the closed circuit television of the fight. There are 900,000 closed circuit television seats available in the United States, and the fight also will be seen on closed circuit in Europe, Asia and South America where boxing is a major sport and fighters are renowned figures. Clay is guaranteed $200,000 against 424 per cent of the ancillary rights. Quarry's guarantee is $150,000 against 22 per cent. (AP), Bobby Scott rifled two touchdown passes and picked the Florida defense to pieces for 385 yards in the air Saturday as llth-ranked Tennessee crushed the Gators 38-7 in a regionally televised Southeastern Conference football game.

Scott, unheralded as a passer. ill Muhammad Ali fact that Quarry is three years younger and is tough and even Maddox' opposition has not kept Ali from being rated a heavy favorite and early Las Vegas odds had Ah on top at 3-1 but there did not seem to be much gambling interest.

Helping make Ali the heavy choice is his reach and weight advantage, the fact he seem ingly has worked himself back into top fighting trim even though he hasn't fought, except for a few exhibitions, since knocking out Folley. Ali is expected to go into the fight at 9:45 p.m., weighing ebtween 205 and 210 pounds. He Monday, Item years since Cassius had a formal fight. They should have been peak years as he sharpened his talents and added new weapons to a repertoire whose principal strength was his blinding speed of hand and foot. Cassius had to be the fastest heavyweight champion who ever lived.

His speed was so overwhelming that it compensated for defects in his fighting style. Boxing purists shuddered at some of the things that Cassius did wrong. But he was so fast that he could get away with them all. If that remarkable quickness has been diminished, the still unbeaten and involuntarily retired heavyweight champion could be in trouble. At the age of 28 Cassius would normally be approaching his prime.

But his career has not been a normal one and the change in him has been total. I met him for the first time in the Olympic Village in- Rome 10 years ago. He won me to him instantly with his overpowering personality and boyish charm, one of the most attractive athletes I ever knew. Cassius has changed, but he must have trapped me inextricably in those early years because I'm surprised to discover that I still have a secret fondness for him. Dcn't revile me for it or ask me to explain it.

I can't. This is neither the time nor the place, however, to enter into a discussion of Clay, who is either a draft dodger or the man who sacrificed millions of dollars to adhere to his principles.
