Committeemen, for the msot part, are selected in an effort to have each era of Millikin sports represented.

Neil and Buryl both were at Millikin in the early 1920s. Arrington was a basketball player of considerable note, being captain of the Big Blue in his junior year. A gimpy knee prevented him from playing much as a senior. I remember Neil mostly as a golfer, and a good one. I especially recall a day when I was playing a match with Hank Gill at South Side Country Club.

As we walked off the 12th tee (the old one, not the current one) a ball came floating down and hit me smack in the middle of the forehead. Arrington, playing the 11th, had hit the ball from below the crest of a hill and faded it so it came down on the 12th tee. Well, almost all the way to the ground Hitting me in the head obviously caused no more damage than raising a lump and -our match went on. Glee in the Millikin football camp over Saturday's 62-8 walloping of Elmhurst should be tempered after a little sober study of a statistic coming out of last Saturday's Carthage-North Park game. North Park is Millikin's foe this Saturday, in Chicago.

Carthage wracked up North Park pretty good, winning 34-14 after racing to a 27-0 halftime lead. An eye-popping statistic, however, is North Park's 416 yards total offense against the Redmen's defense traditionally tough. Quarterback Gary Duesenberg connected on 15 of 31 passes for 278 yards. It can be presumed that Carthage did not have its regulars in all the way but still 416 are a lot of offensive yards. The Blue, therefore, can expect to have its defense tested much more severely than last Saturday.

Millikin's 62-point splurge vas the No. 1 item in last Saturday's CCIW openers but really no more surprising than North Central's 30-22 upset of Augustana. This was a real stunner against a team rated in the coaches' pre-season poll third behind Carthage and Millikin. The victory ended North Central's 31-game CCIW losing streak. It last won over Elmhurst in 1968.

In case you didn't notice, Illinois's freshman soccer-style kicker, Dan Beaver, got off to a perfect start against on a 59-yard scoring play. A Rick Moore to Joe Arganbright pass covering 21 yards gave the Reds their triumph over Lakeview and Mike McCoy ran three yards for the lone Lakeview touchdown against Eisenhower. MacArthur substituted freely against the Reds and Lakeview and a fumble recovery against Eisenhower helped the Generals turn things around. The Panthers were driving against the Generals only to lose the ball inside the 10. 16-14-12-10-V-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1: W-L-T pts.

Knowledge of how tough it is to finish with a profit, especially by newcomers on the tour, apparently has no effect on ambitious amateurs who are confident they can make it big "out there" against J. Nicklaus and associates. A field of 373 applicants will compete next week in three regional 72-hole tryouts for the 1973 Qualifying School of the PGA Tournament Players Division.

Seventy-eight will advance to the qualifying school proper where they will play a 144-hole tournament to determine the final qualifiers for the tour. Last year there were 468 applicants, 81 qualified for the school and 25 earned tour privileges. Many who failed are back in this year's field. There are some surprising golfers trying far a tour ticket, including an optometrist, a doctor, and a lawyer. Their ages cover a span from 17 to 61.

Six are over 35. A surprise applicant is Harvie Ward, the North Carolina native who migrated to California and won the British Amateur in 1952 and the U.S. Amateur in 1955-56. Just when Ward appeared ready to dominate the amateurs as Bobby Jones had done, he received a not-too-severe disciplinary slap from the U. S.

Golf Association for expense irregularities. For snme- reason Harvie never played with much zest after that. So it's surprising, at this late date, he's trying to get b3ck in competition much tougher than he faced as a young amateur. Of course the new glamor golfer, Ben Crenshaw of Texas, is among the applicants. He will play in what the PGA calls the Midwest tryouts Midwest in this case being Irving, Texas.

Other applicants are British star Peter Oosterhuis, ex-baseballer Ken Harrelson (his second try), and Mike Ford, son of veteran pro Doug Ford. from me, I was stunned. In his last five games, Madlock has 10 hits in 20 at-bats including a home run, two doubles and a triple. In his first 11 games in the majors, he has hit .341, scored 11 runs and driven in four.

"The kid swings a quick bat," said Martin. "So far, he's been terrific. He comes up there, takes his cuts and gets his hits. He's got excellent speed, too." Madlock, who hit .339 to lead Spokane to the Pacific Coast League playoffs, has frustrated every pitcher to face him so far. "They are all experimenting with him right now," said Martin.

MacArthur didn't exactly roll up the points and all three opponents moved the ball well against the Generals at times.

"We're not very big, but we're quick and some kids have come through we didn't count on quite so soon. Pat Tosetti has been doing a good job at right halfback and Curt Miller, Rick Schroeder and Zanni Rawls have been doing a job beyond our expectations." Matheson also had high praise for quarterback Ron Fiala who justified it all with a great exhibition of coolness and chips-down play later in the Jamboree when he passed for 207 yards on seven completions in 10 attempts. Ron saw enough action behind Bruce Blaylock last season to gain the experience he needs this year and the gutty 170-pound senior made the most of his chances. "Now what we need is to get some experience for Ron Boehm," said Matheson. Boehm relieved Fiala in the Jamboree against both Lakeview and Stephen Decatur, so that problem was at least partially solved Tuesday night.

Riggs, who won the '1939 Wimbledon title, has played in some pretty bizarre matches. But it's unlikely either has ever played to the accompaniment of an entire marching band.

Adding to the noisy throng, expected to reach 40,000, will be the University of Houston marching band. Both Riggs and Mrs. King apparently will be laughing all the way to the bank regardless of who wins. Although billed as a winner-take-all match, the loser may net as much as $100,000, Perenchio said. After winning her first two matches in a women's tournament on Monday, Mrs.

King went into semi-seclusion to prepare for the match, leaving Riggs and Perenchio to the promoting. Riggs continued to work out in a huge plastic covered bubble on to MacArthur's Generals didn't exactly pulverize their opponents in the Varsity Jamboree last night at Pigott Field, but then who wants to argue with three shutouts and an offense which scored when it had to. There's also the distinct possibility the Generals were under wraps with the Reds coming up Friday night and scouts scattered through the crowd eyeballing not only MacArthur but the other three Decatur teams as well. There's also a distinct possibility the Generals were still in the clouds following a 45-20 victory over Mattoon last weekend in which they executed about as perfectly as any MacArthur team ever has. "We were real happy with the kids after that one," said Coach Bob Matheson prior to the Jamboree.

"Mattoon is a good ball club and we really did a job on them. "We beat them in the line" said Bob. "I expected our line to be pretty good, but these boys have really come along fast. Mattoon had a fine backfield and our line play was the difference." The Generals name a "hustler of the week" after each game and have for years. Rarely is the honor shared, but the coaching staff made a little history after the Mattoon game.

"We named the entire offensive line," said Matheson. "After we looked at the film there was just no other way to go." The offensive line is made up of Jerry Muse at split end and Bill Weatherford and Dale Arlington, Tex.
