Decatur, Illinois, Sunday, February 3, 1974 DECATUR SUNDAY HERALD AND REVIEW 19. High School Wrestling Dakin Exhausts Opposition With Ail-Around Performance Lakeview. John Kotzelrick was the Decatur Herald and Review city "player of the year" in 1969-70- Dave Marques led city scoring twice, including a city record 26.4 points average in 1971-72. "Dakin is a better shooter than either of the others," Walker said. "And he can do more things.

He's not conscious of his statistics while he's playing. Some players do keep track of their stats, and you can tell it by the way they play." Dakin confirmed Walker's analysis. "I can feel it when I'm doing well, but I don't keep track of my points," he said. "I feel a little extra pressure because I know I'm supposed to carry a lot of the scoring load. But it doesn't bother me when I know I'm contributing to a victory.

I didn't have any personal goals for the season. I wanted the team to win 20 games." Dakin said he would like to play in college, but admits he will probably go to a small school. At 6-3, 170, he's too small to play his present position at a major college. And though he can handle the ball in spots, he's not an expert in that area. Dakin says he wants to go into business, probably accounting.

One problem Dakin has, because of being thin, is tiring easily, Walker said. "He doesn't notice it while playing, but after a game Dave is exhausted," Walker said. "He's even bushed after practice." Dakin admitted the fact, but looked at it philosophically. "You're supposed to be tired after a game," Dakin said. "If you're not, you're not doing your job." By Steve Fox Dave Dakin, who shares Lakeview High School's basketball game scoring record, has a chance at the career mark.

Dakin, 6 foot 3 senior, poured in 43 points against Clinton in the third place game of the Shelbyville Invitational tournament. It tied the school record set by Dick Koch 21 years ago. The performance helped Lakeview score 100 points and tie another school record, set against Mount Zion in 1960. "I kept Dakin in until the end, along with four substitutes, because we were told he was approaching the tournament record of 44," said Coach Don Walker. "We didn't know then that he was also close to a school record.

He would have had it by himself, but he missed a last free throw toward the end of the game." Dakin came back to score 27 points against St. Teresa Tuesday night in Lakeview's 74-56 victory. He was instrumental in ending an 18-game losing streak against St. Teresa. That gives Dakin 1,104 points in a career.

The Lakeview record is 1,310 by Ron Stutes in four seasons, ending in 1956. Now averaging 24 points best in the city Dakin has at least eight games to surpass Stutes. He must average close to 26 points to do it, but it's not impossible considering Dakin's explosiveness. Of course, Dakin has a better chance if Lakeview can defeat Eisenhower in the regional tournament opener. In the past, it would have been a foregone conclusion that AT MACARTHIID 98 K.

Nastase Named Top In Tennis New York (AP) Hie Nastase of Romania, one of the game's most controversial figures, has been named tennis Player of the Year for 1973.

The temperamental Davis Cup ace received 14 of 20 first place votes of a special international panel of writers forming the jury. Nastase will be awarded the Martini Rossi gold racket in New York on Tuesday. Stan Smith of Sea Pines, S. the 1972 winner, and John Newcombe of Australia, who shared the honor -with Smith in 1971, were close in the voting for second place. Newcombe, winner of the U.

S. Open at Forest Hills last September and a key figure in his country's victory in the Davis Cup, took second place by the margin of one point. i Nastase, 1972 U. S. Open win ner, dominated the Grand Prix circuit in 1973, winning seven tournaments and climaxing the season with a victory in the Masters at Boston.

He won $228,750 in prize money. Nastase, Connors Picked Salisbury, Md. (AP) Hie Nastase of Romania, the world's to-ranking player, and Jimmy Connors of Belleville, III, co-ranked as the favorite players in the National Indoor Open Tennis Championships at Salisbury, later this month. Bill Riordan, general chairman of the tournament being held in Salisbury for the 11th consecutive year, announc ed Saturday that the two players he manages will return for the event which runs from Feb. 17-24.

Connors, co-ranked at the top of the U.S. rankings with Stan Smith of Sea Pines, S. is the defending champion while Nastase won in 1969. While Smith and some others under contract to World Championship Tennis are not playing in the National Open, Nastase and several others from WCT will be in the expected 54-man draw from 21 nations. Nastase, Gorman -Advance Richmond, Va.

(AP) Top-seeded Hie Nastase of Romania and second-ranked Tom Gorman of Seattle, advanced Saturday to the singles finals of the $50,000 Fidelity World Championship Tennis Tournament. The two favorites were ex tended to three sets before moving into their 12:30 p.m. CDT encounter today for the top prize of $10,000. Nastase turned back third- seeded Nikki Pilic of Yugoslavia, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the second and featured semifinal match. Pilic, whose banishment from the Wimbledon tournament last year touched off a boycott by most of the top professionals, was the first player to win a set from the fiery Romanian since play began Tuesday.

The first semifinal saw Gorman come from behind to eliminate unranked Patrice Dominquez of France, 2-6, 6-3, Press Box Report Eisenhower would win. Not so this time. Eisenhower edged Lakeview 74-72 in the championship game of the Decatur Thanksgiving Classic, and won 86-75 in a regular season game at Eisenhower. "The game at Eisenhower didn't prove anything about either team," Walker claimed. "Because both teams played "In fact the whole team, including Dakin, was in a slump before the last Clinton game.

We had gone from a 6-1 record to 8-7. I realize we weren't playing the best opposition but the way we played really pleased me." Dakin is shooting 56.4 per cent and averaging 14 rebounds. Walker said the rebounding would have been better, but Dakin is playing a wing spot. Last season he played inside. "Opposing defenders haven't had any luck stopping Dave, so lately they've tried to take the pass away from him," Walker said.

"As a result they overplay him, and he's been sneaking through the back door and getting some good shots inside. But he can shoot from out. "And he can handle the ball when he has to, even if he doesn't look pretty doing it."
