percussion by Victor Derevyanko and Andrei Pushkarev The Symphony No 15 in A (Op 141) is an odd duck even in its original form It has many of the composer's hallmarks not least an acidic bite in its fast movements and heart tugging minor key lyricism in its slow ones But there is also an odd toying with older music most notably fragments from Rossini's William Tell and Ring The original of course has the heft and solidity of orchestration and the loss of that is immediately apparent But there are compensations in this deft arrangement The most obvious is trans parency but even so Derevyanko and Pushkarev always take the obvious route The Adagio for example is presented mostly as a sequence of solos and duets for the violin cello and piano The percussion writing is colorful but by no means over bearing and includes some uncommonly soft timpani playing J) Training Chorus Ji Chorus Young Ensemble J) Young Ensemble 199 per person doubh occupancy 1NSTON SAZ Chorus Barbara Beattie
