Thus, we tested two mowers, since the Black and Decker and Sears are virtually identical. The tested mowers were 24 volts the smallest cordless electric mowers available in this market and all are readily available in area stores. For the test, we used the mulching setting, which uses the most power. All the mowers worked quite well. The Black DeckerSears had the best suction and their height adjustment was one of the best I've seen.

A grip automatically adjusts all four wheels at once, without sweat and swearing. The Toro was smaller and a lot more manageable around the beds in my garden, but had a more standard height adjustment consisting of levers on front and rear wheels. As far as power, all three had more than enough to cut my small lawn without even a dent in the battery charge. Even when the grass was high, these mowers performed well. However, we didn't have them in time for first cutting in spring, which is always a tough test.

Freeing myself from the cord, cut mowing time more than half, to about 10 minutes per job. When we were done, we asked Adam and Justin Meyer, the teen-agers across the street, to cut their lawn. The mowers cut both lots without moving off full charge. So much for worrying whether they have adequate charge capacity. Though all' three are good machines, they did have some Haws.

On the Black DeckerSears, the front wheels were slightly narrower than the rear wheels. I always figure if the front of the mower fits in a space, the rear will too. Not so with this one and I hated it. The Toro model is the same width from front to rear. Both designs also had an unwieldy back flaps to keep debris from flying up in the face of the person mowing.

The flaps were stiff and annoying; the Black Decker model had such a stiff flap it was almost difficult to pull the machine backward. To be fair, these would probably get more flexible over time. And all were heavier than comparable models with a cord. Though both designs had their merits, I prefer the Toro, if only because of its better maneuverability in my extensively planted yard. My husband, Dennis, also ran the mowers and like most husbands, he had his own opinions: "The first to arrive was a Black Decker model that impressed me so much, I felt it would be impossible for it to be displaced as my favorite.

The feature that got my' attention immediately was the one-touch height adjustment. With just two fingers, you can squeeze a lever that adjusts the height of all four wheels at once. This is great if you like to vary the height of cut in different areas' of your yard. You can also easily raise the mower to its maximum height to roll down steps. I was impressed with the amount of power the mower had, it really vacuumed the grass blades up and mulched the clippings well." He also noted that, although these are mulching mowers, the McAninch to Robert Wagner and Betty R.

Black Decker Sears comes with a rear The Toro has an optional side bag.Though Dennis favored the Black Decker Sears, he began to change his mind when he tested the Toro.

Which one you prefer probably depends on your situation. "I found that if you have a plot with a lot of small' tight areas, the Toro is the mower for you because it is a little more maneuverable and fits under things that the Black Decker doesn't." he said. "If your lawn is an open expanse, and you are used to a gas mower, the Black Decker Sears is probably the product for you." The bottom line is: If it takes 43 minutes or less to cut your lawn and you are tired of gas cans, fumes and noise, you might want a cordless electric. They perform well, with more than enough power to handle most urban lots on a single charge. And according to Don Dettlinger, service manager at Pantone Lawn Garden in Etna, they aren't seeing many maintenance problems with these units.

While charging expense is minimal, about 3 cents a day. according to Toro spokesman. Mike Ferrara. you will have to replace the batteries in five to seven years. Each of the mowers we tested have two, 12-volt batteries, which cost $50 to $73 apiece, says Ferrara.

The batteries are safe to keep on charge all the time and can be kept plugged in all summer. Unplugging the battery over the winter will extend the batteries' life, says Ferrara. For my money and the environment. I'm sold on these units. In fact.

I'm buying one. I've sent back the Black Decker and Sears models. Toro donated the one I tested to the Pittsburgh Civic Garden Center, which plans to raffle it. If you don't win it. check out the fall sales coming up.

It might be time for you, too. to go with a cordless electric i Pennsylvania Conservancy. And in May, on Pittsburgh Cares Day. 30 volunteers from around the "city joined 50 Polish Hill residents in planting the gardens. "He's making (the neighborhood look very homey, and he's spurred an interest in a iot of the other residents." said Sharon Wolkiewicz.

president of the chic association. "I think it'll be a snowball effect. He's offered to help the others with their yards. "The man's phenomenal. For being a new resident and being so involved in his community, it's just amazing." Thanks to Friday and others' like him, "We're becoming a very close-knit community once again, which is the way it was when my parents and grandparents were here.

We're trying to get it back to that." Wolkiewicz She has fond memories of hanging out at Friday's house when she was a teen-ager and the house was Philomena's. a restaurant with a soda fountain. Built around the turn of the century, the house still has its storefront windows. Vacant for 15 years, the Brereton Street building was rescued from demolition by the East End Neighborhood Forum, which rehabbed it. Happily, reality was kinder than fiction; The house appears in the 1993 movie "Roommates" as Peter Falk's longtime home, from which he is evicted before it's razed.

Friday asks anyone with perennials that need dividing or. that could be donated to the community gardens to call the Polish Hill Civic Association at 412-681 -1950. A resident's green thumb brightens Polish Hill lots; GARDEN FROM PAGE B-1 weather. 'As soon as winter's breaking. I'm out there to see what's poking through." In 10 years, even five, Friday's garden will be another place entirely, as the perennials, hollies and trees get taller and fuller.

"As the perennials fill in, I'll move them to some of the community plots as I thin them out." One of the new gardens was created on a former vacant lot just behind Friday's garden, at the corner of Dobson and Downing streets. It was a jumble of rocks, weeds and poison ivy before Friday enlisted his new neighbors in a cleanup and dig-out project. Salvaged rocks and bricks from the razed building on the site now edge beds in the garden, which contains mostly trees and annuals. "It's an easy way to spruce up a neighborhood and maybe put a little softness and beauty in." Another garden, on an even steeper site, brightens the corner of Brereton and Herron avenues, just up the street from Friday's house. The white alyssum, giant hyssop, African daisies and heliotrope were raised from seed by residents of the senior high-rise down the block.

Much of the work of making the gardens was organized by the Polish Hill Civic Association. "The association is extremely supportive and active," Friday said. "They sent letters to the nurseries I asking for donated trees and plants), provided bodies and got contributions." Friday also solicited and received financial support from the Western Good.
