Sports Writer WINSTON SALEM At his press conference last week Wake orest coach Bill Dooley had paid the mandatory com pliments to South talented quarterback Todd Ellis But he cautioned prophetically the improvement in the Gamecock defense is what has made 14th ranked South Caroli na so difficult to beat this season Saturday afternoon those same Game cock defenders proved Dooley an astute judge of football talent as they blanked the Deacons 30 0 before an overflow crowd 37200 in Groves Stadium It was the second straight shutout for a South Carolina team that has given up only sev en touchdowns all season The victory assured South Carolina of a bowl bid and improved its record to 7 2 overall The Gamecocks host ninth rank ed Clemson Saturday in a showdown that annually attracts the attention of the en tire state Conversely the slim Deacon hopes for postseason play were all but snuffed out with the loss which dropped them to 6 4 South Carolina simply dominated the game holding the Deacons to just four first downs and a mere 66 yards total offense Only three of those net yards came on the ground and one of the first downs came courtesy of a penalty Wake only crossed midfield twice during the game and never penetrated deeper than the Gamecock 42 yard line The final stats were reminiscent of the shellacking ap plied to NC State in Columbia two weeks ago when the Wolfpack managed just three first downs and 35 yards Obviously the Gamecock offense got the football frequently and eventually gained 451 yards South Carolina held a 2 1 edge in time of possession running 87 plays to 43 In direct contrast to the run and shoot reputation a surprising 50 of those plays came on the ground Despite the lopsided edge in statistics though the Gamecocks led just 13 0 at the end of the first half and they only added a field goal in the third period So South Carolina coach Joe Morrison switched to the I formation in the fourth period and the resulting two Harold Green touchdowns squashed even the most partisan Deacon hopes of a comeback (See South Carolina C4) Carter's gives State 47 45 win By TOM NORTHINGTON Start Sparta Writer DURHAM ootball legions of the past have believed the offensive drama that unfolded Saturday at historic Wallace Wade Stadium a stadium where some of the great defensive duels in college football his tory have been documented The final score was NC State 47 Duke 45 after 3Vz hours of passing warfare Though 10 touch pagrj downs and 1100 yards of offense had been re corded by weary play era on both teams it BrW remained for sopho more Bryan Carter of jf A NC State to settle the ML outcome with only 29 seconds remaining 11 Carter watched from JS the sideline as sopho more quarterback Carter Shane Montgomery another of heroes worked on tired defenders to get his team to the Blue 16 and in field goal range as the clock ticked down been mentally preparing myself for the moment during the last 10 said Carter it likely would get down to something like When the time came he was ready He decided the Big our offensive strug gle with a 32 yard field and later said eqjoy being in situations like It was the former Greensboro Grimsley fourth successful kick of the afternoon and more than atoned for the extra point he missed earlier in the third quarter Still Carter and his teammates couldn't be sure of victory until Doug final effort failed That came when the Duke kick field goal try from 55 yards fell short and wide of the crossbar with four seconds left The Blue Devils had exhausted all their timeouts and they were forced to try it on second down after penetrating to 38 on the passing of senior quarterback Steve Slayden A few more seconds and Duke might have been the one celebrating But this one belonged to Carter and the Wolfpack longest kick of the day a 47 yar der in the fourth quarter had put State ahead 44 38 with 10:56 left Duke wiped that out with its fifth touchdown a 13 yard scor ing pass from Slayden to flanker Clarkston Hines with 5:11 remaining Too much time for the Blue Devils to survive one of the most exciting comebacks in Atlantic Coast Conference history Duke once appeared headed for an easy victory as the Wolfpack all but self destructed before Montgomery warmed up his arm And what an arm he put on display this day The sophomore who had only one ca reer touchdown pass to his credit before rising to the challenge against Duke struck for three TDs and completed 29 of 46 tosses for a whopping 468 yanls (See State C9) Virginia's late march stuns Heels 20 1 7 By WILT BROWNING Start hand the stunned Tar Heels a 20 17 defeat or Carolina it was a crushing setback The Cavaliers defeated What was regarded in the heat of summer as the best team Dick Crum has recruited in his 10 was so sudden so unexpected that it left the Heels in shock Crum belea guered coach spoke even more soft ly than ever in the post game rituals before cutting short his press con ference to disappear from sight in the somber Heels dressing quar ters So much in control was Carolina in this game that when Tar Heel linebacker Mitch Wike intercepted a Scott Secules pass off the hands of tailback Kevin Morgan many in the Scott Stadium crowd of 38400 walk ed away into the beautiful after noon Carolina owned a seemingly safe 17 7 lead Ah but what they missed!
