MUSINGS UNG Greensboro is losing no time getting its basketball program moving toward the NCAA Division I level where it plans to be by 1991 The schedule for 1988 89 still in the making already includes the likes of VMI Appalachian Winthrop and Liberty all Division I teams plus Davis Elkins from West Virginia and Pembroke and ayetteville State from North Carolina But even more noteworthy is the fact that they will host a Christmas tournament in that will include University of Pittsburgh Johnstown Eckerd from lorida and Slippery Rock (Pa) It will begin as a campus event but the people at UNCG make no bones about their hopes that it may grow into something big enough for the Greensboro Coliseum PS on UNCG basketball: Coach Bob McEvoy whose Spartans were 22 6 last year and ranked 17th in the final NCAA Division III poll thinks they will be again in their last Division III season up coming (next year they compete in Division II) Translated I think that means probably be the team to beat in the Dixie Conference again He returns a good portion of the team that led the Dixie regular season last year at 12 2 and quite high on two recruits in particular Steve Hunter a 6 foot 4 200 pounder from Northwest Halifax and Chris Riser of Prospect Hill Md When Arnold Palmer was at Tanglewood Monday promoting the Oct 2 4 Vantage Seniors championship he added weight to something Gary Player said at Augusta last spring namely that it may not be long before somebody in the over 50 set wins a major golf championship he said think it may well happen in our Arnie who turned 58 week before last suggest that he would be the person to do it but his unbridled enthusiasm for the game never ceases to amaze those who have followed him since college days at Wake orest He was hitting one shot with each foursome in the media competition and when he joined a group on the 10th tee he asked do you want me to hit three feet to the left of the far one replied pointing to a spot at least 250 yards away with a slight bend to the left Whereupon Palmer wound up that mighty swing of his and smashed it to within a foot or two of the target Speaking of golfs golden greats it is interesting to note that three of the top four money winners on the Senior PGA Tour Chi Chi Rodriguez Bob Charles and Gary Player are former Greater Greensboro Open winners The fourth Bruce Crampton was loyal to the GGO and not infrequently visited here between tournaments with Dallas and Allie Belle Neese with whom he stayed during the GGO Dallas died a few years ago but you can bet that when Crampton comes to the Triad to play in the $1 million Vantage in two weeks Allie Belle will be the first person he contacts An intriguing note in USA TODAY reports that and NBC are looking into moving college games to Sundays if the plan to play games involving free agent players during a strike You could have fooled me Silly boy that I am I thought college football schedules were controlled by college athletic adminstrators not TV networks Guess just behind the times PS: If the strike does come off it could be a good break for the Vantage which would be a good bet to move from ESPN to either CBS or NBC as a fill in for football ormer players and associates in the North Carolina physical education department are planning a special evening to honor Bert Piggott who coached the Aggie football team Hr Oil if 4 Palmer Schultz with great honor and distinction longer ago than many of us care to remember scheduled Oct 10 at the Sheraton downtown Bud Meadows Leon Warren and Ed Nesbitt are the brains behind the occasion The mart Corp the Greater Greensboro title sponsor beginning next spring is deeper into sports outside the GGO than was evident at first blush The 1988 participation in the Olympics will total $30 million in advertising and promotion That includes sponsorship of telecasts from both Calgary (winter games) and Seoul (summer games) and official sponsorship of the USA hockey team that was mostly selected after the US Olympic estival here in late July Quotable quotes: When new NCAA executive director Dick Schultz was in town early last week for annual sports banquet he made it quite clear where he thinks responsibility for keeping sports in the proper perspective rests starts at the top with the he said must provide the chancellor (or president) with the support he needs to make his decisions on the highest level of And as a word of advice to UNCG in its climb into NCAA Division I status he added institutional priorities in the forefront and let time take care of the Mail man: Kelly Miller general manager of the Pine Needles golf resort in the sandhills writes to say that the scheduled filming of Caddyshack II at their place reported here two weeks ago is now off were unable to reach an agreement on the use of our facilities which led to their decision to film Miller reports Too bad one filming I would like to have watched Virginia nips Tech Terps triumph The Virginia Tech tailback Mal colm Blacken in the backfield on a two point conversion try with 1:24 to play to nail down the victory for Virginia which improved its record to 1 2 "Our coaches had the defense Virginia Coach George Welsh said Virginia Tech went for the victo ry with the two point conversion af ter the Hokies pulled within one point on quarterback Erik Chap 26 yard pass His pass went into the end zone where the ball bounced off the chest of the intend ed receiver Karl Borden and into the hands of tight end Steve John son who hauled in the ball before it fell to the ground Secules a fifth year senior threw a 29 yard scoring pass to Keith Mat tioli in the first quarter and ran a yard to score in the second period for Virginia was a very emotional game for us today" Welsh said was the first time in a long while that the defense has won a The win was only the second in the last eight years ACC' Secules Krivak against their intrastate rivals Virginia Tech 0 2 on the season is 35 29 5 in the series with Virginia which began in 1895 The Hokies whose other touch down came on a three yard run by Earnie Jones in the second quarter tried an 'onside kick after Chap scoring pass to Johnson but Virginia recovered and tried to run out the clock The Cavaliers turned the ball over on downs however and Vir ginia Tech got another chance from its own 28 with 21 seconds remain ing Chapman hit Borden on a 22 yard pass to move the ball to mid field but following an incomplete pass defensive tackle Elton Toliver sacked Chapman on the final play of the game stopped us when they had
