Never thought be saying this John but you were absolutely right I mean how in the world could people who are supposed to be leaders in the field of athletics and education have voted in a thing like Proposition 42? Gotta believe John that they got caught up in the beauty of San rancisco with trolley cars and Ghiardelli chocolates and Irish coffee at the Sans Souci Cafe and stuff like that I understand how San rancisco can play tricks on straight thinking people like that But these people just lose their hearts John They lost their minds And your stroll Saturday was the perfect way to call our attention to that tragedy Prop 42 is so ill conceived that in my opinion you can go back to coaching right away No way this going to stay on the books very long if I understand what they voted in at San rancisco $6 million savings The Associated Press Kelly Tripucka drives for reverse layup against Philadelphia rElV fiB 9K2K Iws OilHEpByW BUy 4 Of gjKOKSst Tripucka's 40 boost Hornets by Sixers in OT The Associated Press PHILADEPHIA It was a long time between road wins for the Charlotte Hornets Kelly Tripucka scored 40 points including nine in overtime as the Hornets beat the Philadelphia 76ers 127 122 Monday to snap an 11 game road losing streak It was only the second road win for the Charlotte expansion team in their first season in the NBA and their tenth win overall The first was a 107 105 triumph over San An tonio on Nov 19 Coach Dick Harter said his team the win against the 76ers who saw their five game winning streak end so important that we have some success for our effort played hard all year and had some tough Harter said and Rex (Chapman) were magnifi A basket by Chapman who scored 25 points gave the Hornets the lean at 120 118 with 1:21 left in overtime Tripucka and Tyrone Bo gues scored baskets to make it 124 118 with 50 seconds remaining putting the game out of reach Philadelphia took a 110 107 lead with 32 seconds left in regulation on a basket by Charles Barkley but Chapman made a 3 point shot to tie it with 15 seconds left and send the game into overtime drew up a said Chap man of his game tying shot doubled Kelly and Bogues found me I just let it go I sure it was going Philadelphia Coach Jimmy Lynam said Chapman never should have had the chance to make the tying Hornets 127 76ers 122 CHARLOTTE (127) 265 51 99 23 27 51 18 38 18 127 Totals PHILADELPHIA (122) Barkley scored 16 points but play in the third period be cause of back spasms 3 point goals Charlotte 2 3 (Tripucka 1 1 Chapman 1 2) Philadelphia 4 12 (Barklev 0 2 Gminski 0 1 Hawkins 1 3 Welp 0 1 Henderson 1 2 Brooks 2 3) Technical fouls Barkley 1 Officials Slrom Dunham Thompson 101 16 shot broke down defensively to give Chapman a chance to shoot a three at the Lynam said shadow Mike Gminski scored 25 and Her sey Hawkins 19 for the 76ers MP PG A Pt Tripucka 40 16 25 7 9 4 1 2 3 40 Chapman 39 11 26 2 2 6 1 2 2 25 Rambis 38 5 7 1 3 6 1 2 4 10 Cureton 32 3 1 3 17 8 3 2 7 Holton 24 3 6 0 0 0 0 10 1 6 Bogues 22 4 7 0 0 3 1 14 0 8 Reid 27 5 14 8 8 3 1 2 2 18 Hoppen 24 3 3 3 3 6 2 2 4 9 Kempton 12 I 2 2 2 6 3 1 0 4 MP A Pt Jones 13 1 2 0 0 0 0 2 1 2 Barklev 34 6 14 4 6 11 5 6 4 16 Gminski 41 11 20 3 3 17 3 4 2 25 Cheeks 42 6 12 2 3 4 1 8 2 14 Hawkins 42 6 14 6 6 3 1 5 3 19 Anderson 40 8 19 0 3 3 2 3 16 Coleman 17 5 8 2 2 3 1 0 2 12 Welp 11 2 3 0 0 3 0 0 3 4 Henderson 11 2 4 2 2 0 0 1 1 7 Brooks 11 2 3 0 0 0 0 2 0 6 Thornton 2 0 01 21 101 1 Totals 265 49 99 20 24 45 15 30 22 122 Charlotte 33 32 18 27 Philadelphia 27 33 31 19 The 76ers took a 91 83 lead early in the fourth period but Charlotte scored six straight points including four by Chapman to close within two at 91 89 Let me see if I have it straight John Without really knowing for sure what effect Proposition 48 is having upon incoming freshmen over the long haul because the rule is so new there has been no long haul yet they decided to try to do something about the battered image of the NCAA by adding a few more boards to the academic floor for incoming freshmen And we got Prop 42 John I doing so far? Nothing basically wrong with setting standards and goals and that sort of thing College for everybody and I know heard that before Then they tied the thing to money If Proposition 42 were to survive to its scheduled genesis in the 1990 91 school year the way it would come down as I understand it or example if the best basketball player were to score 690 on the SAT 10 points below the Proposition 48 minimum and nevertheless carried a grade point average in the neighborhood of a plus the guy w'ould have to pay his own way to school no matter how wonderful his jump shot happened to be As I read it Prop 42 says that who fail to qualify may receive no financial aid except that provided through Pell grants and student loans Which means John that these folks are not even permitted the same kind of financial aid that is made available to non athletes No more American Dreams Hit the street time Just seem right does it John? not a very flattering thought but gotta be at the root of this coach Cold hard cash My friend Art Padilla a man who frets over stuff like this as much as you do but who attract much attention if he walked away calculates that if Prop 42 had been in existence this fall Division I schools would have saved something like $6 million in scholarships No play no pay So what the saying through this asinine proposal is simple Kid if you help the old alma mater get to the NCAA Tournament your freshman year if you catch passes and score touchdowns and get us a good bowl bid if you help fill the stadium or the fieldhouse tough luck Call us when you can hotshot See John I have much difficulty with Proposition 48 which makes it possible to place a recruit who fails to measure up academically on full scholarship his freshman year but does not permit him to practice with the team The theory' is as I understand it to give the youngster time (See Browning B7) Lebo UNC's Lebo definitely will miss Duke game CHAPEL HILL (AP) North Carolina starting guard Jeff Lebo will definitely miss game against top ranked Duke team officials said Monday Lebo who twisted his left ankle Sunday in the second half of North Car 103 86 loss to Vir ginia may also sit out game against No 15 North Carolina State said team trainer Marc Davis The senior from Car lisle Pa is North second leading scorer with a 147 average The 13th ranked Tar Heels are 14 3 and 1 1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference lorida runs past NC 90 75 By TONY GREEN Staff Sport! asking himself that question after the game The Aggies came in hob bling: Corvin Davis was slowed with the flu and start ellow guard Mitchell Bristow who played well in loss to Bethune Cookman Saturday was out with a broken hand reshman Bobby Moore starred in relief of Davis until he injured his ankle nine minutes into the second half The Charlotte native finished with a team high 20 points
