cruise I to victory 22 7 By HELEN ROSS Staff Sports Writer DURHAM The scoreboard clock refused to work in the first quarter and as stadium officials worked to correct the problem the final buzzer was activated blaring raucously for several minutes Other than that however home opener went pretty much ac cording to plan as the Blue Devils defeated an outmanned Ohio team 22 7 Saturday night The victory which moved Duke to 2 1 for the season was neither unexpected nor particularly excit ing About the only suspense re volved around whether Duke would get its first shutout since 1978 and Bruce five yard touchdown pass to Tom Compemolle with 7:44 remaining resolved that issue In fact a fireworks display at the end of the evening drew louder cheers than most of the action dur ing the game And the crowd that was on hand for that light show was considerably smaller than the 28500 announced at the start of the night Actually it wras an unexpected shower at the beginning of the sec ond half not boredom that had sent so many streaming for the 'ex its But as Duke established itself as clearly the superior unit Saturday night only the most diehard of fans remained to hear the final buzzer work on cue Offensively Duke did exactly what was expected primarily rely ing on the passing arm of Steve Slayden to move the football the Blue Devil junior completed 18 of 22 passes for 213 yards and two touch downs before he was replaced mid way through the fourth quarter? Both touchdown passes went to Greg lanagan but Doug Green was most prolific receiv er Green a junior from Graham hauled in seven passes for 92 yatds When the Blue Devils tried to run the ball it was with limited effec tiveness Duke did manage 183 yards rushing but 64 of that total came on one carry a spectacular scoring run by freshman TJ Ed wards on the second play of the second half That touchdown which lifted Duke to a 22 0 lead was first collegiate rush and only the second time he had touched the foot ball The first was a fumbled punt in the season opener but the 64 yard College ootball Scores ACC Clemson 31 14 Georgia 28 Maryland 24 Virginia 3 Carolina 10 15 lorida St 10 NC State 42 Wake orest 38 Georgia Tech 28 Virginia 14 Duke 22 Ohio 7 ACC Standings Conf OvtraH Tam NC State 1 0 0 2 0 1 Ga Tech 1 0 0 10 1 Maryland 0 0 0 3 0 0 North Carolina 0 0 0 2 0 1 Duke 0 0 0 2 1 0 Clemson 0 0 0 1 1 0 Wake orest 0 10 2 10 Virginia 0 10 12 0 Nut Game Clemson at Georgia Tech 12:15 pm Virginia at Duke 7 pm Maryland at NC State 7 pm Wake orest at Army 2 pm MEAC Beth Cookman 30 Howard 0 Delaware St 40 Morgan St 12 NC SC State 11 MEAC Standing Conf Ovsral Team Beth Cookman 2 0 0 2 1 0 1 0 0 3 0 0 Delaware St 1 0 0 3 0 0 SC State 0 10 12 0 Howard 0 1 0 0 3 0 Morgan St 0 2 0 0 3 0 Nut Game Grambling at at Bethune Cookman 7 pm Howard at SC State 1:30 pm Morgan St at NC 1:30 pm SAC 8 Elon 41 Guilford 7 Lenoir Rhyne 13 Wofford 9 Newberry 16 Gardner Webb 13 Citadel 15 Presbyterian 13 Mars Hill vs Catawba late SAC 8 Standing Conf Overall Tiam Elon 1 0 0 2 0 0 Newberry 10 0 110 Carson Newman 0 0 0 2 0 0 Mars Hill 0 0 2 0 0 Lenoir Rhyne 0 0 0 2 1 0 Catawba 0 0 0 0 1 0 Presbyterian 0 0 0 0 1 0 Gardner Webb 0 1 0 0 2 0 late game not included Nut Game Carson Newman at Elon 2 pm Newport News at Catawba 1:30 pm Georgia Southwestern at Gardner Webb 2 pm Lenoir Rhyne at Presbyterian 7 pm Newberry at Western Carolina 7 pm Southern urman 34 VMI 3 UT Chattanooga Tenn Tech 10 Davidsonr Tennessee St late Kencky vs Marshall late Southam Standing Conf OvtraH Turn Appalachian St 2 0 0 2 1 0 urman 1 0 0 2 0 0 Marshall 0 0 0 2 1 0 The Citadel 0 0 0 2 1 0 Va Military 0 1 0 0 2 0 Davidson 0 0 0 0 2 0 UT Chattanooga 0 0 0 1 2 0 Tenn St 0 10 0 10 Carolina 0 1 0 0 2 0 late games not included Next Game The Citadel at Appalachian 1 pm Tennessee St at Virginia Tech 1 pm urman at Marshall 7 pm UT Chattanooga at Georgia Southern 7 pm VMI at James Madison 1:30 pm Newberry at Western Carolina 7 pm CIAA Central State 35 State 8 Livingstone 13 of DC 13 Eliz CitySt 21 Bowie St 13 Virginia Union 16 Hampton 7 Norfolk St 6 Smith 0 St 23 Newport News 20 Independents ICAuburn 45 Carolina 0 National East Brown 21 Yale 7 Connecticut 29 Richmond 22 Cornell 39 Princeton 8 Delaware 33 Chester 31 Harvard 34 Columbia 0 Holy Cross 38 Lafayette 14 Lehigh 41 Colgate 39 Maine 34 Rhode Island 14 New Hampshire 26 Boston 9 Northeastern 23 Youngstown St 21 Penn 21 Dartmouth 7 Rutgers 48 Cincinnati 28 Temple 38 lorida AAM 17 Virginia Tech 26 Syracuse 17 William Mary 30 Bucknell 13 South Alcorn St 24 Alabama St 17 Kentucky 37 Kent St 12 Liberty 17 James Madison 7 Louisville 45 Kentucky 7 NE Louisiana 17 SW Texas St 14 Salisbury St 16 errum 14 Tulane 35 Vanderbilt 17 Midwest Cent Michigan 20 Bowling Green 10 Dayton 49 St Norbert 21 Michigan 24 Akron 21 Indiana 52 Navy 29 Iowa 57 Illinois 3 Iowa St 64 Indiana St 9 Kansas 16 Utah St 13 Long Beach St 14 Michigan 13 Michigan 31 Oregon St 12 Michigan St 20 Notre Dame 15 Morehead St 36 Wichita St 35 Nebraska 59 Illinois 14 Northwestern 25 Army 18 Ohio St 13 Colorado 10 Pittsburgh 41 Purdue 26 Texas 27 Missouri 25 Southwest Arkansas 34 Tulsa 17 Houston 28 Oklahoma St 12 Oklahoma 63 Minnesota 0 Sam Houston St 24 Lamar 13 Southern Cal 17 Baylor 14 Texas A4M 48 Texas St 28 ar West Arizona 41 Oregon 17 Colorado St 46 Colorado 14 Idaho 25 ullerton St 17 Montana St 50 Idaho St 27 Nevada Reno 51 Montana 17 Pacific 41 New Mexico St 14 Stanford 28' San Jose St IC Wyoming 23 Air orce 17 Others EAST Albany NY 54 RPI 20 Amherst 34 Bates 33 Bloomsburg 38 Lock Haven 32 Brockport St 17 Mansfield 14 Brooklyn Col 20 NY Maritime 13 Buffalo 37 Buffalo St 7 California Pa 38 Salem WVa 20 Denison 28 Allegheny 24 Duquesne 33 BethanyW Vi 26 Emory A Henry 35 BrdgwaterVa 9 erns St 38 Clarion 28 ordham 13 Catholic 6 rnkln Marshll 44 Ursmus 12 Gettysburg 34 Maryland 7 Glassboro St 13 rostburg St 10 Hofstra 13 Stony Brook 3 Indiana Pa 41 Northwd Mich 21 Juniata 14 Moravian 13 Kean 35 Ramapo20 Kutrtown 27 Shippensburg 9 Manst 24 st Peter's 8 Mass Mantime 1 1 Maine Maritime 9 Muhlenberg 6 Dickinson 0 New Haven 20 Slippery Rock 0 Plymouth St 25 Curry 7 St rancis Pa 19 Georgetown DC 1 7 Shepherd 10 Glenville St 7 Connecticut 28 Cheyney 12 Swarthmore 13 Johns Hopkins 3 Trinity Conn 41 Bowdom 7 Union NY 28 Rochester 0 Virginia St 14 Concord 13 Virginia Tech 41 MWest Liberty 21 Westmnstr Pa 29 ranklin 20 Williams 17 Middlebury?
