C-4 PITTSBURG1 POST-GAZETTE WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 1997 OBITUARIES FREDERICK "FRITZ" MIHM Owner of Brushton rental stor 1 p- King" at Christmas Mass. After he stopped singing in the choir, the church retired the song. "When he'd sing that hymn, the whole place would be crying," Pacienza said. "He had a beautiful voice." In the mid-1970s, Mr. Mihm discovered barbershop singing.

He was a member of the Three Rivers Chorus, a group he sang with for 25 years. On warm days, he could be found walking Frankstown Avenue, talking with friends and dispensing advice. "People called him the Mayor of Brushton," Pacienza said. Aquiline said he wouldn't be forgotten anytime soon. "After all these years, people still come in and ask for him," he said.

"Then they ask for peanuts." In addition to his wife and daughter, Peggy, Mr. Mihm is survived by two other daughters, Kimberly Mihm-Henokl of Lucerne, Switzerland, and Carol Scully of Chicago; two brothers Robert of Miami and Bill of Orlando, and four grandchildren. A Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. today in St. Barnabas Church, Woodstock Avenue, Swissvale.

Thomas T. Nied Funeral Home in Swissvale is handling arrangements. Frederick Mihm TTa fef JOHN H. LONG President of U.S. Steel bridge division By Ken Zapinski Post-Gazette Staff Writer John H.

Long spent a lifetime making sure things were built right. While he was president of U.S. Steel's American Bridge division, his crews built some of the world's tallest buildings and one of its longest bridges. After his retirement in 1978, he set out on a second career building the management team that today still leads Pitt-Des Moines a steel contractor and distributor based on Neville Island. Mr.

Long, formerly of Sewickley, died Friday and was buried yesterday in Texas, where he had lived during the early part of his life. He was 84. Mr. Long joined U.S. Steel in 1944 as a sales manager and engineer in Houston.

Twenty-five years later, he became head of American Bridge. Those were heady days for Big Steel, and Mr. Long's projects were among the biggest around. American Bridge erected Sears Tower in Chicago, by some measures still the world's tallest skyscraper. His crews built U.S.

Steel's Pittsburgh headquarters and Chicago's John Hancock Center, two buildings that boast their steel heritage as they climb into the sky. The last major construction job under his direction was the building of the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia. The massive steel span gracefully arches nearly 900 feet above the roiling water of the New River. The bridge itself has become a tourist attraction, as tens of thousands of people gather each October for the Bridge Day festival. Mr.

Long retired from U.S. Steel in 1978, the year after the bridge opened. And that is only half of his John H. Long at New River Gorge Bridge in 1976. on Pennwood Avenue.

Mr. Mihm was a legend for the parties he threw. On the Sunday before Christmas, he would drag the furniture out of his house in Regent Square, fill the first floor with tables and chairs, and serve pancakes to nearly 200 family and friends. He was planning a giant clam bake for this coming Labor Day. But the thing he loved the most was singing.

Mr. Mihm, a baritone, was a fixture at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church for decades. A frequent soloist, he would sing the hymn "Birthday of the By John Zebrowski Post-Gazette Staff Writer On the counter at his rental store in Brushton, Frederick "Fritz" Mihm kept a small garbage pail filled with peanuts. A light bulb inserted into a hole cut in the bottom kept them warm. For the 33 years he operated Mihm Rental, customers could always be seen munching peanuts as they walked through the aisles.

Mr. Mihm kept his shop, which rented everything from heavy machinery to snow cone makers, in the same spot on Frankstown Avenue while other businesses moved away. He had grown up next door and told people ne would never abandon his neighborhood. Not even the 1968 riots, when shops along the avenue were firebombed, could drive him away. Mr.

Mihm died Sunday from complications following open heart surgery at St. Francis Hospital. He was 71. Mr. Mihm built his business out of the small grocery his mother ran for 35 years.

Although he moved his family to Regent Square in 1970, he kept the store until 1990. Even after he retired, he would bring friends by to show them the old neighborhood. "He was always coming around," said Dino Aquiline, who worked for Mr. Mihm for 10 years before buying the company in 1992. "He just couldn't leave." After serving as a cook in the Army during the Korean War, Mr.

Mihm bought three lawn mowing machines and, in 1957, turned his mother's grocery into a rental outfit. Because the store was always open, he enlisted his family to help run things. His wife, Dolores, managed the books, and when they were old enough, his three daughters became stock girls. "We all worked there, whether we liked it or not," said his daughter, Peggy Pacienza of the South Side. Mr.

Mihm was a man who never seemed to rest. When his daughters were young, he took them ice skating nearly every day. During the 19(i0s, the whole family participated in an ice show at Coulter's Ice Pond MARY RIDGWAY Service for Gen. Ridgway's widow Long laughed. "I don't know whether the guy got the job or not." Mr.

Long's legacy with Pitt-Des Moines, the company that erected the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, is the management team that he assembled. The president, William W. McKee, and chairman, Phillip 0. Elbert, joined Pitt-Des Moines in 1987 when the company bought Chicago Steel where they were corporate officers, "We would have never bought the company if it hadn't been for the people," Mr.

Long recalled in a 1991 interview. "He certainly did put a team in place, and that team is still running the company," Fry said. Mr. Long stepped down as chairman and chief executive in 1990, but he remained as a director at Pitt-Des Moines until 1995, when he retired for good. In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Memorial Oaks Funeral Home in Houston handled arrangements. story. He had been on the board of Pitt-Des Moines for nine years when the company, still largely controlled by one of its founding families, needed a boost. So Mr. Long stepped into the executive suite, first as president in 1987 and then as chairman a year later.

"He was like a breath of fresh air," controller Marvin Fry said. "He was outgoing, walked around the halls, chatting with people." One secretary said he used to chat with her every morning about items he saw in The Wall Street Journal. "He was adorable," she said. "He was just a marvelous businessman, but he had a way of injecting humor into everyday business." His son, Herb Long, of Lafayette, chuckled about a story told at yesterday's memorial service in Houston. His father, it seems, used trick disappearing ink on a job candidate during his days at U.S.

Steel. "He put it on the guy's tie just to see how he would react," Herb way will be buried beside her husband, the late four-star general who was buried in Arlington National Cemetery after his death of heart failure in 1993. After Ridgway's retirement from the Army in 1955, he and Mrs: Ridgway relocated to Fox Chapel. The Ridgways had one son, Matthew B. Ridgway who at age 22 was fatally injured in 1971 when he was struck by a railroad locomotive while on a camping trip in Canada.

A memorial service will be held today in Arlington, Va. for Mary Anthony "Penny" Ridgway, widow of Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway. Mrs.

Ridgway, 79, died Saturday in her sleep at her home in Fox Chapel after a long illness. Local services were private. The couple married in 1947. Mrs. Ridgway was a homemaker who, friends said, devoted her life to her family and to preserving her husband's memory.
