MENTOR OTHER DEATHS Mars High School graduate, biology major at Penn State Ernie Wise, 73, the consummate straight man who entertained Britons for four decades with his comic partner, Eric Morecambe, on Sunday of heart failure and a chest infection in Slough, west of London. Mr. Wise and Morecambe were one of Britain's best-loved comedy teams. Their Christmas specials became television classics.

Jean Guitton, 98, a Catholic philosopher and academic who was the only layman authorized to take part in the Second Vatican Sunday in Paris. He was the author of some 30 works, mostly focus-: ing on the relationship between Catholicism and modern thought. r. Paul Toth, 63, a National League pitcher in the 1960s, of a heart aU tack Saturday in Anaheim, A right-hander, Mr. Toth had a 4-1 record with St.

Louis in 1962 and was traded in 1963 to the Chicago Cubs, where he went 5-11 over two years. Erfn M. Mentzcr, a Butler County college student, was killed In a head-on collision in Clearfield County on Sunday night. Miss Mcntzer, 20, of Adams, was a passenger in a car that collided with another car on state Route 153 in Pine. State police in Clearfield are trying to get additional informa tion about the accident, which occurred at about 6:16 p.m.

Miss Mentzer, a 1997 graduate of Mars High School, was a sophomore at Penn State's Altoona campus, where she was majoring in biology. She was a member of St. Kil-ian Catholic Church in Mars, where she was active in the youth group and had been on three World Servant Mission trips in Mexico, West Virginia and Kentucky. She also had sponsored a child for Children International. She is survived by her parents, Jean and Michael Mentzer of Adams; a brother, Michael, at home; and grandparents, Agnes and Louis Lanzendorfer and Deloris Garrison, all of Duncansville.

Friends may call today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McDonald-Ae-berli Funeral Home in Mars. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Mars.

Burial will be in Mars Cemetery, Adams.
