Melody was born in Vandalia the daughter of Joseph Richard and Elizabeth Sue Wireman Beckler on December 2, 1947. She married Paul Kendall and he survives. She worked as a cashier for Kroger's. She attended the Mound Road Church of God and Antioch Christian Church. She was a member of the Marine Corps Auxiliary serving both in local and national units.

Survivors include her daughter, Krystal Flynn and special niece Indigo Beckler of Decatur; her brother Galen Beckler of Decatur. She is also survived some very special friends, whom thought a lot of her; they include Allen and Doris Ruble of Decatur, Dereese and Nathanial Yarborough of Tennessee, Children in heart Lisa and Mike Brown and Krystal and Jacob Berg; grandchildren in her heart include Brittany and Jessica. Herman Heine Goldstine, a mathematician involved in the development of the first electronic computers, died June 16 of Parkinson's disease, a funeral home said. He was 90.

Goldstine persuaded the military to back the development of the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) to calculate artillery firing tables. He lobbied the Army to provide $500,000 for research carried out at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School, where the 80-foot-long computer with 18,000 vacuum tubes was created. Goldstine then served as associate director of an electronic computer project at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., where he collaborated on the design of a second generation computer called EDVAC (Electronic Differential Variable Computer). He was hired by IBM in 1958 and stayed with the company for 26 years. Clayton Kirkpatrick GLEN ELLYN Clayton Kirkpatrick, the former editor of the Chicago Tribune who was credited with overseeing vast changes in the paper in the 1970s, died June 19 of congestive heart failure, his family said.

He was 89. Kirkpatrick's first lead editorial, on Jan. 1, 1969, signaled that the paper formerly known as the "Republican bible" would aim for more balanced coverage. He angered his opponents on the Tribune Co. board in 1974 with a series of decisions related to the Watergate scandal.

After years as a reporter at the paper, Kirkpatrick began an apprenticeship in editing at the Tribune in 1954. In 1979, he was promoted to president and chief executive officer of the Chicago Tribune Co. He retired in 1981. Dear Dr. Donohue: Will you please do an article on vitamin popping? My 90-year-old husband (yes, 90) was released from the hospital and was prescribed every conceivable vitamin in addition to a multiple vitamin.

He takes 13 vitamin pills a day. His doctor told him to taper off and then to take only one multivitamin pill a day. Three months later, I can't get him to do that. Just how much vitamin is too much? Anon. Your husband belongs to the school of medicine that says "If a little bit is good, a lot is better." But that's not true, and it's not true for vitamins.

High doses of some vitamins can be dangerous. Let me give your husband a few examples and hope he listens to his doctor and you. The recommended daily allowance of vitamin A is 900 micrograms (3,000 IU) for adult men and 700 micrograms (2,300 IU) for adult women. If the daily dose exceeds 3,000 micrograms (10,000 IU), serious consequences can occur. A vitamin A overdose can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

Continued use of high doses can bring on a loss of muscle coordination and can damage the liver. Too much of this vitamin accelerates osteoporosis, something that happens to elderly men as well as to women. The daily dose of vitamin for adults is 15 mg. The upper limit is set at 1,000 mg, quite a leeway but one which many people exceed. Too much vitamin can disturb blood clotting, which means a person finds that even a slight cut produces bleeding that won't stop.

In addition, amount, so the danger of too much is not a problem. However, in special instances, large doses of vitamin B-12 are prescribed and are absorbed. Pernicious anemia is a case in point. This anemia results from a B-12 deficiency. In Europe, large oral doses of B-12 are prescribed for treatment of that anemia.

In North America, the more common practice is to administer the vitamin by shot to ensure its absorption. PAUL DONOHUE too much brings on overwhelming fatigue. The recommended dose of vitamin depends on one's age. It's 5 micrograms (200 IU) for those between 19 and 50, 10 micrograms (400 IU) for those between 51 and 70, and 15 micrograms (600 IU) for those older than 70. The upper limit has been set at 50 micrograms (2,000 IU).

Overdosing with vitamin can lead to kidney, heart and lung calcifications. High doses can also make people lose their appetite and be on the verge of throwing up all the time. I could go on, but I hope your husband gets the pic ture with these examples Too much B-12? Dear Dr. Donohue: My jar of vitamin B-12 capsules suggests one capsule a day with water. The percentage of the daily allowance for this one capsule is 8,333 percent.

Overkill? If there isn't a decimal point after the first "3," it's overkill. The daily allowance for vitamin B-12 is 2.4 micrograms for adults. No toxic upper limit has been set, so overdosing with B-12 apparently is not harmful. It is, however, unnecessary. In a healthy person, the body absorbs only the necessary Fancy words Dear Dr.
