Tommy rd mash them Instead of squeezing lemons whenever a drink of lemonade is wanted squeeze several lemons nt a time strain the juice and keej It in a bottle for future use Well Mary and progress are you making towards matrimony I think on my lap INDUSTRIAL UNREST It is most unfortunate that we are still experiencing considerable industrial unrest As has been previously stated in my annual ad dress rising wages with resultant increase of costs and prices is not lhe olulion of our troubles In creased production with resultant decreasing prices must be recog nised as the solution and until a wholehearted effort is made to wards this end present conditions will continue I am pleased to learn the Prime Minister has made an appeal for increased production and it is to be hoped his advice will be heeded by all responsible in industry Taxation from present high lev els must be reduced It has been sustained far too long having re gard to existing conditions and to buoyant revenues being collected by Government Incentive must be given to people to work and in crease extremely high taxation has been a major factor in slowing down production Such statements as I am making have been continuously made by those holding responsible positions in industry in recent years they represent the consensus of opinion of all experienced leaders and chief executives in industry whose desire is for the welfare of the industry they represent and whose views I venture to say must be given cred ence if we are to overcome the dif ficulties that beset us In Australia That great opportunity for ex pansion Is available to Australia there is no doubt and it wholly de pends on ourselves as to whether we take advantage of it There is the definite move from overseas to make considerable investments in Australia and it behoves us to jus tify the confidence that other are willing to place in us and our fut ure Communism can have no place In a free democratic country like that it has many adher ents here there is no doubt nev ertheless its doctrine is anathema to any thinking citizen who stands for democracy and freedom It must be faced resoultely and it is gratifying to note that within the Labour Movement there are defin ite signs of the realisation of this menace Nothing can destroy the confidence of those who are will ing to join in our expansion and prosperity more than Communnsm fad such a doctrine could create nothing but chaos in Aus tralia OOD OR BRITAIN May I suggest a Government sponsored scheme of food for Brit ain would meet with wholehearted support from the great majority of Australians Whilst the sending ofarceh a greatly appreciated gesture it is not enough Nothing but a fully Government organised scheme During recent extensive travell ing in the country districts he was appalled to find (he alarming deterioration that was taking place over the whole network of roads! the Leader of the Country Party (Lt Col Bruxner) said in the Leg islative Assembly Because of the increased cost of labour and materials and in spite of the use of the most modern ma chinery the cost of road construc tion was now from 00 to 70 per cent above pre war level while bridge work had increased 100 per cent Bitumen which cost £8 a ton at the side before the war was now £19 Col Bruxner said that municipal and shire councils a swell as lhe Main Roads Board were faced with tremendous problems Every motorist paid lOJcl a gal lon in petrol tax but 6Jd of this went into the hungry maw of the Commonwealth and only 4d was spent on the roads The petrpl tax was a great bur den on road transport operators in country districts They were being by the Comonwcallh who did not seem to re alise' the importance of roads on our economic life "urged: ther government to' ad vise the ConionweaUh that it continued trie petrol tax atLthe exlsting'ratelit must: 'give quate finaaaiaUassistanced to the States for i (XhtitoteiMufca 'btf roads heartily supported but certainly not if it means depleting lhe rural industries of labour essential to carrying on even the routinal work of production let alone any devel opmental work on the land Here is a matter which must be seriously considered by our legis lators unless rural production is to tatoes and divided them equally be considerably reduced It is noted with regret that there has been no diminution in the numbers employed in Government services generally a large propor tion of whom could be so usefully employed in necessary production The following is an extract from the Address by the CHAIR MAN DIRECTORS SDR CLIVE McPHERSON at lhe Annual Meeting held in Melbourne on Tuesday 25th May ighting the Winged Scourge should suffice Rudyard Kipling has aptly ex pressed our true British outlook: stands if reedom fall Who dies if England RURAL luTBOUR The great scarcity of experien ced rural labour is a serious fac tor in he conduct of our rural in dustries I believe it is true to say that to day there is a greater shor tage in this respect than at any time in lhe last fifty years UHHfirraiizHfinn as oHHn a nianir in political platforms for many most promising sprays in tents and years and is one which can be airy huts A straight pyrethrift and a pyre thrin plus DDT spray were fin ally selected for Army use both sprays killing all mosquitoes in sprayed habitations BRIGHT SILVER JA Pilver wil1 be 35 br'81t as rtew If IV JJts50vered with sour milk allowed 'Hl'fand for half an hour and then and rinsed Jerilderie Pharmacy fiaT3iz a Pi Be Wise and Prepare NOW or Winter Ailments REMEMBER!
