WINSTON SALEM JOURNAL Sunday May 28 1989 PAGE DS RAWLINGS Continued rom Page DI week believe what this place came Hyde said track just kept up with the times it went ahead of the times lived around here 12 years and I remember a dav I drove up here and see construction equip ment Humpy Wheeler let up I know Curtis Turner and Bruton Smith born this thing but as far as con cerned it come into being until Humpy came over track was built in a swamp This was the most no good piece of ground in Ca barrus County You give this ground away You believe the rock under that swamp solid granite Charlotte Motor Speedway has been transformed into solid gold orced into bankruptcy in the early 1960s the speedway recovered and became the Las Vegas of stock car racing Cash registers jingle amid the glittery buildings and Sunday morn ing sideshows shows that have ranged from predictable country mu sic to an outlandish mock invasion of Grenada HARRY HYDE The contrived entertaiment is of ten more memorable than the race Daytona and Talladega produce speeds so fast that from time to time NASCAR makes teams alter their carburetors and thus slow down Darlington the granddaddy thrives on the drama and legendary quirks of its past Charlotte the fourth major track has a long but hardly storied history Racing folks all remember the tragic crash in 1964 that burned ireball Roberts and caused his death Beyond that they have trou ble reciting anything other than per sonal anecdotes Evens so the 600 holds a special place in contemporary racing of the teams have their shops some where near Petty said is probably the closest thing to the center of racing you could find Greensboro is the biggest city close to the center but the track is here Maybe 80 percent of the teams think of this as their home track if talking about superspeedways This is the hub Everybody wants to win this How someone should go about winning the 600 is a matter of conjec ture Hyde believes that the foremost factor is speed from the center of the fourth turn through the straight away a rule of thumb that makes him point to ord as the traditional favorite ord drivers have won only six of the 29 races though including a measly two 600s since 1970 Waltrip the defending champion relies on patience in the grinding marathon look at a 500 mile race and say you should take it easy for the first couple hundred he said a 600 mile race got to take it easy for 400 miles You run a normal race You can conserve on this race track When half a lap down not in trouble The start of the race on Sun day tell you much After the first hundred miles the race is differ ent really different the last hun dred Richard Childress the owner of Dale car adores the Charlotte track because it gives driv ers plenty of room in which to race As the day wears on the furniture in the racing room changes ones who adjust to changes in the race track are the ones who have the best chance of Childress said can seem the same for a week and a half but after 300 miles on Sunday afternoon a different race track The shad ows from the grandstand and from any clouds change the temperature of the track You have to be able to get the tires right You have to give your self some flexibility in the chassis setup so you can go one way or an other as conditions change If you start out with the car all the way tight or all the way loose you have any room for The personality still con founds Hyde after all these years the toughest son of a gun to stay consistent on in Hyde said hard for a team to do well here one year and come back and repeat I know why that is but it is know Darlington has been called the track too tough to tame As far as concerned Char lotte is too tough to tame 1 can get around Darlington good when I have a good car I can come here with a good car and feel good about our times Then I go get a hamburger for lunch I can come back 30 minutes later and lost half a second I know why or how we lost that half a second but spend the rest of the week trying to find it Char lotte is like one of those greased pigs You think you have him hemmed up but you sure going to catch Petty certainly feels that way The king of stock car racing has flattened his machine and jolted his brain more often than he has succeeded took me 15 years before I ever won this thing and then we won again in he said one of those deals where I feel like the track owes me At Daytona won two or three I have won and lost three or four I have lost It kind of evens out if you know what I mean never evened out here lost a lot more than we lost race you win got to have circumstances on your side learned that at Charlotte got to have all the circumstances on your side This track been good to me but always liked He alone On the day of the 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway no one is CHICAGO Continued rom Page DI The Bulls called time And when Scottie Pippen had trouble inbound ing the ball they took another time out This time the pass came to Jor dan who glided along the right side of the lane then went aloft with a lunging effort that put the ball through the net for the victory The Pistons got a last chance with three seconds left Taking the ball at half court they went to Laimbeer then to Joe Dumars who took a long jumper that caromed off the back board The Bulls seeking their third straight upset in the playoffs re tained the home court advantage in the series with victory Half of the four remaining games of the series are scheduled for Chicago starting Monday with Game 4 Mark Aguirre led Detroit with 25 points while Vinnie Johnson had 19 including 11 in the fourth quarter Bill Cartwright scored 15 for the Bulls The Pistons had an 11 point lead at halftime largely on the strength of an 18 point performance by Aguirre Midway through the first quarter yesterday a head fake by John Salley sent Cartwright soaring and uncontested lay in built the lead to seven points The Pistons momentarily took the crowd out of the game But on the next trip down the floor Jordan danced past four Piston defenders for a twisting lay up then staged a re run seconds later to keep the Bulls close The Pistons usually have better success than other teams in defend ing Jordan who was coming off a less than sensational game when foul trouble and the flu helped limit his output to 27 points But Jordan was the picture of health from the start scoring 13 points in the first quarter while Isiah Thomas playing under Jor gaze could score only 3 points in the first quarter The Jordan show kept the Bulls within 1 point after the first quarter at 28 27 Aguirre led the Pistons to an 11 point halftime lead 56 45 In his 18 point first half he accounted for 10 of the 14 points scored on the floor during a stretch Earnhardt has any more horsepower than we have both down on horsepower right now qualifying had been a drag race have been about 10th I need more However Kulwicki said big gest thing in this race is to stay out of Earnhardt and his crew agree biggest problem here lately has been trying to stay out of the penal said Kirk Shelmerdine the crew chief for Earnhardt In last 600 Earnhardt got into a celebrated fender banger with Geoff Bodine and was sent to the box for five laps knocking him out of contention And in the fall Earn hardt was dueling with Davey Allison for the lead late in the race when a NASCAR scoring tower snafu sent both to the rear of the field On the restart they were both knocked out in a crash Waltrip and Wallace had the hot cars in last Winston All Star sprint the 600 is a differ ent deal from that Shelmer dirie said drivers are all pumped up for the Winston because so short But the 600 is a long race and the drivers will be a little more conservative run as strong in the 600 as we did last Sunday (when Earnhardt finished third) and I don't think other teams will be quite as strong Plus after what happened last Sunday Rusty and Darrell will have other things on period And dif ferent from car owners like Junior Johnson and Richard Childress be cause I consider myself more a driver than a car The men with horsepower this weekend Kulwicki says are Waltrip and Schrader who both drive for Rick Hendrick The motor men for Hendrick here are Ken Bingham and Ron Reavis of Winston Salem This will be the second race for new Lumina and last Sun day the Luminas had a lot more punch than the Thunderbirds the Lumina look as good as I thought it would be not by judging my car against and Geoff said Kulwicki who ran with Earnhardt all day last Sunday was worried when Chevy came out with that new body style We all kept hearing the stories' about how much quicker the new Chevy would be over the Monte Carlo after test ing But I seen that Among the stories to watch today: Bill Elliott: The defending na tional champ has gotten off to a slow start this year or the first time since he broke his wrist at Daytona in ebruary Elliott is finally back at full strength But his racing team is 'still four months behind schedule Mark Martin The rising ord star has been a top qualifier all year and on the front row again to day But when the race starts he usually falls off the pace Says Mar tin you handle here 50 extra horsepower fix it if someone tells you they know what the track is going to do in the race then lying seen all week there is no judging this place it
