PAGE 18 WINSTON SALEM JOURNAL Monday September 26 1994 BUSINESS COMPUTERS Compaq LTE Elite has some wonderful features few drawbacks By Peter McWilliams UNIVERSAL PRESS SYNDICATE When the new Compaq LTE Elite 440CX ar rived and I opened it up I must have been lamenting the memories of my childhood as I could see this laptop looked different from the Toshiba 1960CT I reviewed last month To me Toshibas have a sense of everything comfortable and practical I had some doubts about this Compaq but was totally won over after using it on the road One of seven LTE Elite models the 440CX comes with an 84 inch color active matrix display a 40 megahertz 486 DX2 processing chip 170 me gabyte hard disk (a 340MB available) 4MB of RAM expandable to 20MB 8K of internal cache and a battery life rated to go from 22 to 5 hours The whole thing weighs 66 pounds It comes with Microsoft Windows 31 MS DOS 6 Microsoft Video for Windows Runtime an on line users guide and TabWorks (more on this in a moment) The specs in sum are amazing The battery for me has run more than three hours and it recharges quickly When I tested the computer with the Nor ton Utility' Sysinfo test it gave me an extraordinary 788 rating meaning it runs 788 times faster than the original IBM PC This is the fastest ever tested (The cache helps make it zip along) With such wonderful features two things still gave me doubts irst there is no trackball that atta ches to the side as with the Microsoft Ballpoint Mouse on the Toshiba Rather this Compaq has a new kind of device a built in trackball called an EasyPoint Trackball that sits in the lower right cor ner by the screen With your right thumb on the trackball your index and middle fingers curve around to the back of the screen where find the two mouse buttons A pointing device attached to the screen? What had the inventors been drinking when they thought this up? It must h'ave been liquid brain cells as I came to love this device brilliant The trackball is in a good spot and with it built in one less thing to attach or lose IBM laptops use similar thinking with the point ing device on Thinkpad notebook computers a red button in the middle of the keyboard called a IBM users tell me they love that too In fact told Toshiba is coming out with some thing similar Clearly the attachable trackball is dead and these new devices are the state of the art Another very clever thing Compaq did with the LTE Elite was build in the transformer No bulky AC adapter to haul around which makes for a sec ond thing not to attach or lose Only the slim power cord is required for operating the computer on AC power Once I became used to the trackball I still had one personal obstacle to overcome When the com puter boots up and goes into Windows Compaq has done away with the Program Manager and instead has added its own program called TabWorks It took me long enough to get used to Windows and make it work the way I wanted (with help from the Daniel Will Harris book Dr Windows Diet from Peachpit Press) Now' was I supposed to learn a whole new When I threw my prejudices aside I could see that TabWorks wras actually a smart rethinking of Windows built more intuitively than the Program Manager It mimics a notebook with tabs the kind you might have had in high school WORKING SMARTER Managers need time to think By Paula Ancona SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE As a busy manager easy to lose touch with yourself and those around you Swamped with responsibilities you focus on action not introspection But not taking time to think can cause errors that erode effec tiveness Often harried manag ers even recognize these weaknesses in themselves says David Peterson a vice president for individual coaching at Per sonnel Decisions Inc in Minne apolis Here is a list of common mistakes managers make adapted from own list Cowboys and by David Noer in Vol 14 No 1 1994 the Center for Creative Leadership Greensboro and Crossing The Minefield: Tac tics for Overcoming Toughest Management Chal lenges by Robert Barner to be released by AMACOM later this fall: Not understanding your true impact Others pay close at tention to words and deeds even those the man ager thinks are trivial Not seeking welcoming and accepting honest feedback People often tone down or soft en their feedback to managers It pays to seek varied feedback from many sources (peers subor dinates executives clients professional associates) Assuming that people will evaluate you on your intentions not your actions Peterson says What matters to employees and others are actions and re sults Do your behaviors enhance or obstruct your intentions? Not taking time to think about what you need what doing w'ho you are Successful people know themselves and their true goals and use that infor mation to guide their actions ocusing on the amount of work being done not its impor tance Managers can become so caught up in heavy workloads that they take time to ob jectively look at their own and their results Assuming that others share your drive and misunder standing those who What motivates many business leaders Peterson says is pow er excitement challenge achieve ment or risk taking What moti vates others may be security pre dictability or avoiding mis takes Plus those employee motivations attitudes and ex pectations can change Managers need to keep track of them Barner says Allowing people to make you a savior Successful managers need to show they are human have shortcomings and have all the answers and they should emphasize they make the organization successful alone Managing by walking around (putting on a show for employees) instead of being around (sharing work getting in volved being sincere) Not constantly learning Successful managers keep their technical and other skills sharp and stay on top of new ways to use computers and information technology to improve their or ganizations Believing that high stress among employees is good for pro ductivity Excessive stress strips a team of energy that could be more
