Sports Greensboro News Record Baseball Outdoors Props Sunday October 2 1983 UNC State win ECU beats Missouri Tar Heels rally past Ga Tech By WILT BROWNING Staff Sports Writer ATLANTA Senior Scott Stan kavage who entered the game with Georgia Tech as the most efficient quarterback set a Univer sity of North Carolina record on the make believe grass of ancient Grant ield Saturday It could not have come at a more fortunate time for the fifth ranked Tar Heels who rode the strong right arm of Stankavage to a come from behind 38 21 victory over winless Georgia Tech And this was no ordinary come from behind victory for the Caroli na which was staring an upset loss squarely in the eyes as the game en tered its final 15 minutes A 21 point outburst made the victory appear to be gaudy It Stankavage threw the ball 31 times 17 of them finding their mark for 271 yards three more yards than Jeff Beaver recorded against Duke in 1966 One of completions a 28 yarder to sophomore Larry Griffin at the end of first possession of the second half lifted the Tar Heels back into the game after a shocking turn of events in the first 30 minutes Another this one covering 30 yards to split end Earl Winfield five seconds into the final period pushed the Heels ahead for the first time on this sunny autumn afternoon rom that point a 28 yard burst up the middle by Tyrone Anthony for one touchdown and a 52 yard run for another by Ethan Horton merely served as finishing touches It took that burst off right tackle and then to the outside by Horton to give him 113 yards rushing and his fourth 100 yard plus game of the year In all it stole some of the thunder from Georgia Robert Lav ette who rushed for 146 yards in cluding a dazzling 58 yard journey for the first touchdown of the game But most of all the 21 points in the final period seems to have an swered one more riddle of this high ly ranked Carolina team the question been asked in Chapel Hill Raleigh and Durham each week going to
