Rockingham Leader Greensboro Daily News, L9 Thursday, Aug. 25, 1983 Reidsville: "A getting to know you' season ahead By TONY GUNN Leader Sports Writer REIDSVILLE The 1983 football season will be a "getting to know you" year for head coach Kelly Minyard and his players. Minyard is starting his first year at Reidsville, being named to the position last spring. He led Henderson Vance to an undefeated regular season in 1982, and he says his Reidsville Rams will be competitive in the Triad 3-A Conference this year. Minyard played football at Reidsville in the early 1950s.

He was named coach of the year in the Big Six Conference last year. "I am satisfied with the people we have and the talent," he says. "We've got a lot of talent, although some of it needs to be developed." Minyard Minyard Reidsville lost 12 players to graduation last year, seven of which were starters. Among those were starting quarterback Kavin Paige, who broke almost every school passing record. He finished with 53 completions in 105 attempts for more than 900 yards.

Returning starters this year include six on offense and five on defense. One of the team's strong points, Minyard notes, will be its runners. "We're going to have people who can run, who've got speed and One of these is senior Greg Dillard, who gained more than 1,000 yards last season. "Greg is a proven player," Minyard says. Candidates to join Dillard in the backfield are junior Tony Bolden and seniors Tom Holderby, George Pritchett and Joe Badgett.

"We've got four or five good candidates for quarterback," Minyard says, "but we don't have anybody who is a proven quarterback at this point." In the running for the quarterback job are senior John Allison and juniors Brett Badgett, Mark Bullock and Ken Scott. Minyard also is pleased when he speaks of the offensive line. The only problem, he admits, might be lack of depth. Two-year starter Steve Stadler should be returning as center, with other linemen to include seniors Donald Gatton, Randy Stanley, Reggie Blackwell, Eric Norman, Thomas Carter, David Graves and Noel Cook, who was out last because of a knee injury, and junior David year Lawson. "We've also got some who can catch the ball," Minyard points out.

Joe Badgett and Bolden may serve as receivers and be joined by Ernest Graves. Most offensive players will be on defense, too, Minyard says. Lawson and Norman will be tackles, while Pritchett and Holderby are among the linebackers. At the end positions are Keith Carroll and Gatton, and outside linebackers include David Graves and Bolden. These players, Minyard continues, will be challenged in their positions by Stadler at linebacker, Stanley at end and Blackwell at tackle.

Inexperience in key positions and lack of depth will be the Rams' biggest problems, the coach says. "We have a few we can replace; but if we have many of them hurt, I think we'll be out of it."
