More law graduates, fewer jobs CHAPEL HILL (AP) There is a surplus of lawyers in North Carolina and throughout the country, and many recent law school graduates are having trouble finding jobs. Allan B. Head, executive director of the North Carolina Bar Association, said unemployment is high among lawyers just out of school. Every August, the bar association holds a practical skills course for attorneys who have just passed the state bar exam. During the course, the association conducts a survey to see how many already have jobs.

This year, 200 of the 373 lawyers who passed the bar exam enrolled in the course. About 40 percent said they were not working, Head said. "This is the highest post-bar exam unemployment level I am aware of," he said. "In past years, the vast majority of those attending the skills course had jobs."
