the post mortems to the participants Veteran coaches Jim Carlen of South Carolina and Dick Crum of North Carolina accepted the outcome with more equanimity than their play ers and the fans kind of thing can happen any a calm Carlen told Crum as the two shook hands at end Later Crum observed: thought South Carolina played very well really not disappointed with the way we played We did everything we Ml kickoff and marched 80 yards in 10 plays to post the first points against North Carolina in the opening quarter The drive was keyed by two Beckham passes one a lofted 21 yarder to split end Ira probably a major bowl bid evaporated into a classic blue gray No 3 rushing offense and by a quarterback named Gordon Beckham who found his mark with 16 of 17 soft floating passes The outcome was aided by a fiat North Carolina team which evidently October sky Saturday when thrice was riding for a fall and which was beaten South Carolina handed the further victimized by an outbreak of third ranked Tar Heels a 31 13 beat jng The shock was delivered by a big physical defensive front which man handled and practically shut down the You have days like this if you stay in But Tar Heel linebacker BROWNING Sport Columnist CLEMSON SC or the second week in a row North Carolina football team played the heavy role as another member of the Atlantic Coast Conference formally made application for the No 3 ranking Sat urday afternoon Holding State to no first downs for more than half of the game when it counted most Clemson yielded its first rushing touchdown of the season to the Wolfpack in the first period Then the Tigers rallied for a 17 7 triumph be fore a crowd of 63000 in Memorial Stadium It was a victory which likely will move the undefeated Tigers (7 0 overall and 3 0 in the conference) up one notch in the Associated Press rankings at the expense of Carolina' which was ambushed by South Carolina 31 13 A week earlier' Carolina had gone from No 4 to No 3 at the expense of State in a game which only remotely resembled the one played here Saturday lot of people around here think we can be the best team in the country I just said Clemson Coach Danny ord whose Tigers turned the ball over to State five times after leading the nation in carefully handling the ball CLEMSON TOOK the lead just 13 seconds before intermission but the Tiger defense began to become the overwhelming factor in the game long before that That Jeff Davis and his contemporaries would belatedly take charge became the most crucial matter in this game A 14 yard pass from quarterback Tol Avery to wide receiver Mike Quick carrying to the Clemson 34 gave State a first down two plays into the second quarter The Wolfpack would not get another until the midway point of the final period On seven possessions between those two first downs Staate snapped the ball three times and punted Meanwhile Clemson had stolen the flow of the game No longer was an upset considered likely or even possible on this chilly afternoon or that fourth quarter first down came on first series after junior fullback Jeff McCall from ayetteville and taken a handoff from quarterback Homer Jordan had sliced over right tackle hurdled a would be tackler at the 10 and wedged his way into the end zone from 15 yards out for second touchdown The run gave the Tigers a 17 7 lead and set tled the issue for the day AS IT DID against Carolina a week ago State broke on top in the first quarter and even seemed capable of perhaps determining its own destiny in this important ACC game It was only a mirage But while the mirage lasted State moved the ball on the ground against a defense noted for shutting down rushing attempts On second possession though the success paid off with a 59 yard drive which tailback Larmount Lawson cashed in on a slant over right end for a touchdown from 13 yards out It was the first rushing touchdown given up by the Tigers this season and only the third one in all Only Wofford and Duke had scored touchdowns against the Tigers this season It was a drive on which the Wolfpack called running plays seven times with freshman sen sation Joe McIntosh picked up 23 yards But he would finish the work with a total 39 NC State scored that touchdown it did us said Clemson linebacker Dav is then we said stop them now let them score any then we having fun out there like we usually have We went out there saying good we play defense we can stop people But we were just out there playing (See CLEMSON: 6 Col 1) Dodgers Win 8 7 Tie Series I By JOSEPH DURSO i NY Times News Service LOS ANGELES In a tumultuous game that included 10 pitchers 27 hits and 15 runs the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied in the late innings Saturday to defeat the New York Yankees 8 7 and tie the World Series at two games apiece Not even the debut of Reggie Jackson in the Se ries kept the Dodgers from an afternoon of melodra ma though Jackson reached base five straight times with two walks two singles and his 10th World Se ries home run The Dodgers survived all that tied the Yankees in the sixth inning passed them in the seventh and then held on while the Yankees threat ened down to the final out They now have won two games in a row at home after losing two in a row in New York Somebody will break the tie today in the fifth game with Jerry Reuss pitching against Ron Guidry in a return match from the opening game of the Series going to ask them to do it one more said Tommy Lasorda the manager of the Dodgers were down by four and didn't quit THIS WAS the second slow and complex game in a row for the teams after two somewhat antiseptic games dominated by pitchers in Yankee Stadium And a clue may have been given when the first four Yankee batters reached base against 'Bob Welch who lasted only 16 pitches before being replaced If further clues were needed they were quick to follow Inside five innings the teams had mauled seven pitchers with 16 hits and six runs Even Rick Reuschel who started for the Yankees and gained a 4 0 lead within two innings was gone within four Every time the Yankees seemed to be drawing away the Dodgers showed their remarkable talent for survival They showed it most of all in the sixth inning just after the Yankees had stretched their lead to 6 3 Then Jay Johnstone pinch hit a home run off Ron Davis for two runs Jackson lost a fly ball in right field Bill Russell singled home another run and the teams were all even again after six innings and nearly three hours of play inally with Tommy John pitching in relief for the Yankees in the seventh the Dodgers coaxed two more run across and took a lead that had seemed far fetched a short time earlier But even before the parade of runners began 1 the Yankees revamped their lineup in a complex way Jackson a man who had hit nine home runs and batted 360 in four previous Series made his first appearance after sitting out three games with a strained left calf muscle Jerry Mumphrey was benched Dave Winfield switched to (See DODGERS: 16 Col 1) Walking Remains His Coal Streater Keeps Undying Spirit By TONY BARNHART Staff Sport Writer CHAPEL HILL The apart ment is not unlike those belonging to thousands of other students The perpetual drone of the televi sion is overpowered by round the clock rock music from a stereo set The couch handed down by a rela tive is a bit the worse for wear but still very comfortable A dusty bicy cle rests behind a chair It is a dwelling place which varies little from the hundreds of others clumped together at various loca tions in this college town Its occu pant however is anything but typical A year ago he would have stood at the door to greet his visitor before inviting him in But on this day the door was already open have a came a voice from the bedroom be right A year ago he would have bound ed into the room on a pair of athletic legs with a broad smile and a firm handshake He would have wanted to spend the afternoon playing bas ketball in the parking lot But that was a year ago On this day Steve Streater used two strong arms to guide his wheel chair into the middle of the room The handshake if not as firm was just as sincere hands are getting he said and with the statement came the familiar smile A year ago the most difficult task in life was stopping wide receivers with blinding speed To day it is learning how to move a wheelchair up and over a curb I NOT for a tragic automobile ac cident which left him paralyzed from the waist down Streater might have been spending this afternoon practic ing with the Washington Redskins of the National ootball League On April 30 the North Carolina defensive backpunter returned from the capital after signing a free agent contract with the Red skins He and roommate Tyress Bratton were returning to Chapel Hill from the Raleigh Durham Air port when the car skidded on wet pavement and flipped Bratton escaped with cuts 'and bruises but Streater was paralyzed instantly shocking the university community and much of the populace of an entire state After months of rehabilitation and a fair amount of soul searching Streater has returned to the Univer sity of North Carolina to finish earn ing his degree in education He is scheduled to graduate at the end of the 1982 summer quarter He spends his days attending classes and his afternoons as an as sistant coach with Chapel Hill High football team Like any oth er student his nights are spent studying and partying to varying degrees And the rehabilitation continues It will always continue says Strea ter until he no longer needs the wheelchair But his fulfillment of that goal does not lie in the foreseeable future His journeys since that tragic night have made him grateful just to be back in Chapel Hill watching his tele vision and listening to the stereo ATER A month of recovery at Chapel Memorial Hospital Streater was moved to a nationally known rehabilitation center in Char lotte When he arrived on June 2 doctors told him he would remain there for a minimum of four months to learn to cope with his disability said to that but I just kept it to said Streater Like any great athlete feats of physical skill always had come easily for him But his well publicized hero ics on the athletic fields had been accomplished simply in comparison to the tasks which were to confront him was like being a little he said or one used to taking great leaps it was difficult to accept the painfully slow process first thing I had to learn was how to get into a chair from the he said took awhile be cause my balance was off Then it was hpw to get through a Shortly after the accident Strea ter underwent a spinal fusion which severely weakened the muscles in his arms As a senior at Carolina Streater could bench press 265 pounds The best he could do in his first attempt in therapy was 30 The major battle for Streater pit ted him against his own frustration had some bad times and just want ed to cool out for a he said I just let her tfc tft ELOISE HICKS is and through a concept known as mary she became the per son closest to Streater during his rehabilitation in Charlotte (See STREATER: ll Col 1) I
