Mi's Herman Schulz accompanied her son Dennis Schulz to Minneapolis Tuesday to help set up his new home for Mr and Mrs Dennis Schulz and baby son Michael Dennis at Mound, Minn., suburb of Minneapolis. Dennis a telegrapher, will now be permanently located with the M.N.S. railroad at Minneapolis. Guests Sunday in the Fritz Bily home were their friends, Mr and Mrs Marvin Trees and family of Forest City. ' Wade Sullivan, Algona postmaster, sent over a little meno to inform us that this is International Letter Writing Week, so if there is anyone you should have written a long time ago and didn't, this is a good week to .do it. If postal figures on handling mail are correct, this will also help to decrease the deficit if you send it first class, but increase it if you send it any other way. * * * Our young scouts who attend most of the movies, particularly the westerns, came home pretty disgusted, last week. One of them pointed out that one of the Indian heroes had a vaccination scar on his arm, and tjyit all the Indians were wearitig' nice, new clothes even though they were on the warpath. * * * Jim Wychor's first Saturday of Grid Guessing gave the 'KLGA manager a percentage of 77 percent right. He had 26 games correct and six wrong. That was the Sept. 21 weekend, and he admitted a bit fearfully that he thinks he dropped lower than that for Sept. 28 ... all of which indicates that Jim is going to lose another five bucks to the press this fall in his try at an 80 percent average. * * * And while we're on football, couldn't help but note that in the TV broadcast of the Green Bay- Chicago Bears game and stadium dedication at Green Bay, Sunday, the introduction of Miss America brought a tremendous ovation, but Vice President Nixon's talk hardly raised a ripple. * * * The waterfowl hunting season will open Saturday at 5:45 a.m. in Kossuth county, but there will be comparatively little to shoot at, in the opinion of Harold H. Burgess, Federal Refuge manager of Union Slough. Duck production at Union Slough, where an annual average of 2,000 ducklings are produced, was down to less than 100 this year, and similar decreases have been noted in other parts of Iowa, ho says. Early hunters depend on locally reared ducks. Migrating ducks from the north come later. * * * Maj. General Walker, in command of the paratroops who went to Little Rock, is no stranger to weird assignments. During World War II he was commander of the third regiment, Special Service Force, and among other places his men operated in the French Riviera section in the invasion of southern France. While on the Riviera they launched a surprised attack on the islands of Hyeres, three islands off the French coast in the Mediterranean. The boys attacked the island with unusual gusto . . they heard (correctly) that one of the islands, Levant, was the site of the world's most populous nudist colony. Their big disappointment was to find that the Germans had either eliminated the colony or taken it with them . . . it cost the U.S. taxpayers $100,000 a day, incidentally, to havi? the Federal troops in Little Rock. * « • Famous Last Line — Officer, I insist en a blood test I TYPING PAPER, 500 SHBKTS 8M> x 11. only 98c at the UPPER DES MOINES Office Supply Sen. Proxmire Dinner Planned By Demo Group A planning meeting of Democratic leaders from northern Iowa counties was held Monday evening at the Algona Hotel in preparation for the speaking appearance, Wednesday, Oct. 23, of U. S. Senator Wm. Proxmire of Wisconsin, at the Plantation Ballroom. Senator Proxmire, since his upset election in the Badger state, is the man whom an assistant Secretary of Agriculture has said will be subjected to a smear campaign when he comes up for reelection for a full term in 1958'. Bert Tollefson, assistant to Ezra Benson, recently told an administrative assistant of Senator Proximo that "unless Proxmire eases up on his criticisms 'of Benson's record, pro-Benson Republicans in Wisconsin will conduct a smear campaign against him." This was outlined as a whispering campaign that would be aimed at bringing in a divorce of some years ago, and Rroxmire's "Wall Strtt't" connections. Proxmire worked for a few months about 10 years ago as a broker for the J. P. Morgan interests. Proxmire will speak following a box lunch dinner. Governor Herschel Loveless and Congressman Merwin Coad will also be on the program. Coad attended the planning meeting here Monday evening. NEED CORN PICKER PARTS? I am wrecking 3 pickers: 1 - NEW IDEA, PULL-TYPE, 1 Dinner arrangements are in charge of Mrs Pat Birkncss of Armstrong, Mrs Ralph Lindhorst and Mrs L. E. Linnan. Kathleen McEnroe of Algona is gcnc*rsl manager of ticket sales. Coad, speaking briefly Monday evening, said he had been challenged to a debate by State Senator Clark McNeill of Belmond. "1 will debate anyone nominated by the Republican party in the June primary next year 1 to oppose me, but my opponent had better be ready to defend Ezra Taft Benson and his farm policy and also the Eisenhower high interest rate policy" said Coad. There are four avowed candidates for the Republican nomination for 6th district congressman thus far, but McNeill has not announced as yet. Tickets for the Proxmire dinner and program arc now on sale by county committee members in nine North Iowa counties. Rebekah Lodge Rebckah Lodge will meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Moose hall. Members are reminded to bring canned goods which are to be given to the I.O.O.F. home at Mason City. •••••••••••••••••I row. 1 - 24 I.H.C. Mounted I - ALLIS Mounted. R. R.
