Behind Oropesa's strong pitching, the Stampede broke open the game in the fifth. After Rafael Gross scored on an Eddie Davis double, Ryan Luzinski hit a three-run home run, his first of the season. "I haven't been swinging the bat well this series," said Luzinski, who is hitting .250 since joining the team in the second half. "I just forgot about everything else and swung hard." Luzinski, who also struck out three times, added a single to drive in the team's final run.

"I have mixed emotions when I look at the line," he said. "I just need to work on being consistent." Luzinski produced, but it was Oropesa's outing that impressed Stampede manager Del Crandall the most. "I was sure we'd get one before the end of the season," Crandall said with a smile. "Oropesa has done very well for us all season, he's been real steady. This performance is no surprise." Stampede notes The Stampede's five-game winning streak is its longest since it won five consecutive games between April 17-21 In five games at Bakersfield, the Stampede has outscored the Blaze 46-29.

It has had 62 hits, 11 home runs and 11 doubles. The winning team in the Bakersfield-Stampede series has scored in dougle digits in 5-of-8 games. The Stampede has won ten of its last 15 road games with an average of 6.1 runs. The Stampede's Dan Camacho (0-0, 1.80 ERA) will face the Blaze's Igor Oropeza (0-5, 5.66 ERA) in today's series finale at 7:30 p.m. at Sam Lynn Ball Park.

WE DO BODY WORK! BEST PRICES FREE ESTIMATES! This guy's Bobby Orr obsession is a bit spacy When Columbia rocketed into orbit from Cape Canaveral, on June 20, the items on board included a Stanley Cup championship ring belonging to Hall of Famer Bobby Orr. Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk had a special reason for carrying the ring with him. He hopes it will lead him to a meeting with his childhood hero. "I've never met him and he doesn't get this ring back until he promises to see me face to face," Thirsk said. He says he called Orr earlier this year and asked him "out of respect if I could fly something for him." He's also took up several hockey pucks and a Boston Bruins jersey from Orr.

Astronauts are allowed to take along a small number of personal items. The 42-year-old physician was among six Canadians chosen as astronauts in 1983. ARMED, BUT NO LONGER DANGEROUS: New York Daily News columnist Mark Kriegel, on former Yankees pitcher Steve Howe's arrest for carrying a loaded gun in an airport: "That's the first time that Howe had been packing heat in a while." WHO LIKES COMPETITION ANYWAY? Chicago Cubs center fielder Brian McRae, on his team's chances in the NL Central: "We're lucky this division is bad. HIS CAREER IS SINKING FAST: Former Phillies pitcher Larry Anderson, on oft-injured Angels pitcher Steve Ontiveros: "This guy has encountered more ice than the Titanic." JOSE JUST WONT HEED THE CALL: Add Anderson: The wily left-hander's take on Boston Red Sox slugger, Jose Canseco, also known for spending time on the disabled list: "The National Guard has had more active duty than Jose." WAS THAT TEAM IN THE LOTTERY? Magic center Shaquille O'Neal, on why he doesn't need to live in Los Angeles to stay involved with Hollywood: "Even if I was in Siberia and played for the Siberian Russian Huskies and I wanted to do a rap video, then I could get it done." 4 Stampede left-hander allows just three hits in eight Innings as San Bernardino gets first shutout of season. By Jodie Valade Sun Sports Writer BAKERSFIELD It took 81 tries, but the Stampede finally became the last team in the California League to hurl a shutout this season. Behind a three-hit performance by Eddie Oropesa, the Stampede defeated the Blaze 7-0 for its fifth consecutive victory in front of 3,136 at Sam Lynn Ball Park. The left-hander struck out 12 in eight innings, a season-high for the Stampede and the second-highest single-game total in the league this season. "This game is the best of my career," Oropesa said.

"In Cuba, I pitched a no-hitter, but I had walks. This game I had no walks. "It felt pretty good." Blaze batters got no farther than second base against Oropesa and did that once in the eighth inning. Jake Kenady pitched a scoreless ninth to help the Stampede allow the fewest amount of hits this season. "I gotta give (Oropesa) credit, he kept us off balance all night," Blaze center fielder Andreaus Lewis said.

"He mixed his pitches up well and had us swinging at a lot of pitches out of the strike zone." Mavs lose 7-1 to JetHawks The Sun ADELANTO Designated hitter Mike Berry drove in High Desert's only run as the Mavericks lost 7-1 to the Lancaster Jet-Hawks in front of 2,838 at Maverick Stadium on Saturday. Francisco Saneaux (1-2) was the losing pitcher, allowing three runs on three hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked five.

"I don't have the same schedule Tommy has," Crandall said.

"He's a great speaker, a great ambassador for the game. He does a lot for the game and he's popular among the athletes and the fans." Crandall projects a more relaxed image than does the fiery Lasorda, who once boasted he didn't get ulcers, he gave them. Also, Crandall is considerably trimmer than Lasorda, who has battled his weight for years. Stampede pitching coach Charlie Hough has known Lasorda since his minor-league beginnings in Ogden, Utah, in 1966 and played for the Dodgers for 11 years. He says that baseball has always been the most important thing in Lasorda's life.

"That's Tommy," Hough said. "That's what he's done all his life. The major leagues is just that major. When you work in major cities, every day for 20 years, stuff adds up. Just like it does for a doctor or a lawyer." Hough added that the minor heart attack might have been the best thing that could have happened to Lasorda because it served as a warning to slow down.

Crandall said the scare was a warning to his wife, Fran, as well. import KocM T-M1TIIK uzi ma 155R13 $29.99 I65R13 $31.99 17570RI3 $35.99 18570013 $36.99 18570RI4 $38.99 efacW4 ON NEW GOODYEAR INFINITRED OUR LONGEST WEARING PASSENGER RADIAL When she heard that Lasorda often pitches batting practice for the Dodgers something Crandall does for the Stampede regularly she became worried. And although Crandall is still adjusting to managing for the first time in 12 years, he said he isn't ready to give up something he enjoys. "I might be a little hard-headed," Crandall said. "I know that when you get older you don't do things as well if you can do them at all.

But I take care of myself. I don't keep late hours, I get plenty of rest." Although the years are adding up, Crandall isn't ready to leave baseball just yet. Neither is Lasorda. "This is a hard game to give up," Crandall said. Johnnie Hernandez turned in his badge following his Thursday arrest for solicitation of capital murder and an unrelated charge of bribery. "We're working on setting up an examining trial right now," attorney, Frank Perez, said Saturday. "I want to see that they do have probable cause to hold him, and it's also an opportunity to see their evidence." Perez said he expects a date to be set Monday for an examining trial the week of July 8. He said he'll also pursue bail reduction next week. Hernandez, 28, was a five-year veteran with 14 good performance citations, including a life-saving award.

DEVANEY RESIGNS AT NEBRASKA: Bob Devaney, who coached Nebraska to two national football championships and was responsible for expanding the entire athletic program, has resigned as athletic director emeritus for health reasons, the school announced. Devaney, 81, had a slight stroke in March 1995 and his health has continued to decline. He said he will still visit the campus and plans to give football coach Tom Osborne, his successor, plenty of advice. Devaney became football coach at Nebraska in 1962 and he took over as athletic director in 1967. During his 1 1-year-stint as Huskers football coach, Devaney's teams went 101-20-2, an .829 winning percentage.

Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Tabled with Saros covered 5 V4 furlongs on the turf in 1:01 4-5 and paid $10.20, $5.60 and $4. COYOTES REPORTEDLY WILL HIRE HAY: The Phoenix Coyotes reportedly are preparing to introduce Calgary Flames assistant Don Hay as their new head coach. The Arizona Republic reported that the Coyotes will announce the hiring of Hay at a news conference Monday. Hay, 42, was en route to Phoenix on Friday night and not immediately available for comment.

DURHAM, GEORGIA REACH SETTLEMENT: Fired basketball coach Hugh Durham and the University of Georgia reached a contract settlement 15 months after Durham's firing. The Athens Banner-Herald said the deal is worth more than $500,000 to Durham, who guided the Bulldogs for 17 seasons before being fired on March 19, 1995. BRIEFLY NOTED: Center Mike Modano was offered a one-year deal for $2.9 million to return to the Dallas Stars Don Casey, a former Clippers coach who spent the last six seasons as an assistant with the Boston Celtics, has joined John Callparl's staff with the New Jersey Nets.
