B2 Greensboro Daily News Wed May 1 8 1 977 i A Martha Long A Bright Bunch Of Young Polks Tuesday 183 of brightest young folks put on their best dress and gathered in Cone Ballroom in Elliott University Center at UNC They sipped punch nibbled delicately on goodies and went through other social graces with as Mayor Jim Melvin put it members of the Proud Parents Club and the Proud Grandparents Club The young folks were there for the annual Recogni tion Tea as the Who Among Greensboro Youth The Who project is one sponsored by the Greensboro Youth Council and the tea was project of five groups the Gate City Service League Greensboro Junior Club Greensboro Wom Club Hamilton Lakes Club and 0 Henry Club Mrs Shore Neal tea coordinator for the clubs welcomed the crowd The Mayor kept his remarks brief allowing as how he had a sore throat which was probably a holdover from his bout with chicken pox Patty Magid Youth Council Who chairman presided the Grimsley High School Madrigals provided entertainment and Rabbi Arnold Task was speaker Then 25 of the honor group got special recognition because they received the unanimous vote of all nine judges If you know how the selection works like this Application forms are available in all of the schools and the judging is done on a point system with five ad ults and four young people Anyone is eligible if he or she is attending a city school or is a city resident and because the Youth Council is sponsored by the City of Greensboro It was a very nice and refreshing affair Warren Crow who is on the Youth Council and was among those honored as well thought it was very nice too He found only one flaw over we have to clean i Matthews Smart ormula been kidding my tax friend Roger Matthews about how he happened to have such smart kids Roger is a Carolina graduate and wife Jackie took higher learning at Greensboro College Since GC is my alma mater I insist to Roger that all that intelligence to be found in his offspring must have come from their moth side! young man worked for several months two times in Greensboro his of serving with the Jaycees and the Greater Greensboro Open (GGO) and to Today he is President Jimmy admin istrative assistant in charge of White House op erations He is Hugh Carter Jr 34 second cousin to the President and buddily called "Cousin Carter said Tuesday worked with the John Harland Co (bank stationers who print indi vidualized checks for bank customers) first in Greensboro from December 1968 to July 1 1969 1 was then assistant plant manager In Jan uary 1973 I went back to Greensboro and worked as plant manager until August Greensboro's springtime and dogwoods and azaleas made their imprint on Carter hated to leave Greensboro I had grown to like it As a medium sized city it appealed to me very much It's the people of a town though who make the town Although most of my friends were Jaycees and those at Harland I got to know a lot of the folks the bankers especially but many others as well I really hated to leave and would like to live there In his first tour of duty here Carter was mar ried He and Joan Samuelson had been married Hugh Carter Jr 'f ifl shortly after she had graduated from Auburn University in Auburn Ga in 1965 we came to Greensboro we rented an apartmant on Chapel Road and Joan worked in the department of the Greensboro Daily Carter added Her newspaper associates remember Joan a pretty blonde as most likable pleasant person She was a hard After leaving Greensboro Joan took graduate work at Miami University in Miami la They divorced and Joan was in Louisville Ky en gaged as a social worker in January of this year the last heard from Carter said Carter who supervises 200 White House em ployes is responsible for the mail the switch board travel and residents On Tuesday morning Carter appeared on the Good Morning America ABC television show His backhills Georgia accent on the show was not as modulated and relaxed as his later tele phone conversation "I was a little disappointed that there was not enough time to tell what I wanted to about the White House Carter said I did say that there were about 67000 letters a week I did not get into the facts that the to the White House to be Worked Together Here Offers Tar Heel Staff Job Carter BY BILL RHODES WEAVER Dally News Staff Wrltar Little did William Robert Schultz 25 a Win ston Salem native realize when he had a sum mer job in Greensboro four years ago that the local work would catapult him into the White House in Washington On June 20 Schultz is to begin work with Hugh Carter President Jimmy second cousin who is chief of White House operations as staff assistant in administrative management He will be involved in organizing and directing employes and activities in the executive man sion Presently assistant manager of the Home Sav ings Loan Association in Chapel Hill Schultz recalled his job in Greensboro in June 1973 was looking for a job as a summer intern and was listed with the job placement bureau here at the Schultz said was the end of my junior year and it was important in my curriculum of business management I worked that summer with the John Harland Co the branch in Greensboro and was under the supervision of Hugh Carter a really sharp business man and very likable fellow was in what they call and spent most of my time in a work study program with the communications system and the logo Most people will think of the Harland compa ny as the one that prints thair personalized bank check Schultz said Carter worked in Greensboro twice as plant manager as part of the complex and was vice president of seven or eight plants in the Atlanta area when Jimmy Carter became President Hugh Carter he said called him first in eb ruary to offer him a job in Washington Schultz said he was interested On April 11 Carter called to give specific details of the job he was offering Schultz and invited him to look over the White House was very impressed by the top notch people working there and was very enthu siastic about working Schultz said Immediately on graduation three years ago Schultz joined Home Savings in Chapel Hill which he regrets leaving after seven pleasantyears in the town These are exciting times for Schultz for he will marry Miss Terry Johnson in Durham June 4 They will have an apartment in Woodbridge Va a 20 mile drive from the White House His parents are the Charles Schultzes of Kernersville who have another distinguished child Their daughter Karen a UNC student was Miss GGO this year Boston attorney 1 Last week Roger and Jackie were in Durham where son Jimmy received his degree magna cum laude planning on medical school in the fall and that will mean counting a son in law three doctors in the family Sunday Roger and Jackie were in Chapel Hill to see daughter Marianna and her husband Bill Henry receive their degrees from the School of Medi cine at Carolina where Marianna also got her degree in chemistry folks and Margaret Henry of Dunn were on hand for the graduation and joined Jack ie and Roger for a celebration dinner In July Marianna and Bill will begin a three year residency in pediatrics at James Whitcomb Riley Hospi tal for Children in Indianapolis The two doctors met their senior year at Carolina and married after their first year in med school Incidentally all three of those chemistry majors graduated from Grimsley Roger and Jackie had a weekend of it in Chapel Hill They went down early to attend the 35th reunion of class and joined all the reunion classes for a dance which had for theme "Hallelujah On The The music for stepping was provided by Dick Wells and his orchestra of Our Town More Local Medics Donald McCurdy son of the Donald McCurdys was another Gate Citizen receiving a medical degree from Carolina on Sunday another graduate of Grimsley and took up collegiate studies at UNC and Guilford before going to Carolina He also had three Navy years in between Before the graduation the doctor and his wife the former Elizabeth Woltz entertained a number of out of town folks at dinner at their home in Chapel Hill Eliza beth is daughter of Dr and Mrs John Woltz of Char lotte In June the young McCurdys will move to New Olreans where Donald will begin a four year program of study leading to a degree in ophthalmology Silver Celebration Tuesday Mr and Mrs Ivey Lee ulk of Osborne Road cut a wedding cake at a small gathering at their home The cake was a silver anniversary one and it was all arranged by their children Mr and Mrs Bill Oliver Connie Lee ulk Ivy Lee ulk and Keith ulk (and yes two of the kids got Lee for a middle name The honoree was Helen Elaine Brown before she became a bride 25 years ago Phillips Mrs Smith Cliff Abels Inga Brandon Youths Of Month outpatient services during the evening hours at the Greensboro and High Point clinics begin ning next month However in order to find out what the need is for the evening service citizen input is need ed on what days and hours would be preferred Mental health officials already have launched a sur vey among current clients to determine what nights or Saturday schedule would be most convenient According to Dr David Slonaker coordinator of the and youth services approximately 40 per cent of parents of juveniles said they had difficulty getting their children to the center on the daytime schedule An estimated 20 per cent of the adults indicated night hours would suit them better The night or Saturday hours for outpatient services would be separate from the emergency service already offered 24 hours daily and on the weekends Patients would make appointments for the evening outpatient services Clients or persons who think they or someone in their families might benefit from the
