for the past 12 years and the crew chief for Bobby 1983 national championship team will be going to work as Technical Direc tor for the Winston Cup series at the end of the season NASCAR officials announced yesterday The stunning decision by Nelson 38 came late Tuesday according to elix Sabates who owns the Kyle Petty team for which Nelson works Nelson in Atlanta yesterday with Petty said had much time to think about next year concentrating on winning the race here at Atlanta Dick Beaty and 1 have been talking off and on about this for a long time And I finally decided that the time was Reynolds 2 1 last night to advance to the second round of the NC High School Athletic Class 4 A playoffs Watauga 12 7 3 will play its next match on the road against Charlotte Providence Mount Tabor winner Edmisten scored at 77:09 when his throw in to the box bounced off keeper and into the goal Reynolds took a 1 0 lead at 8:49 on an unassisted goal by Greg Schmid and protected its lead through Year of the Bull dog in Northwest North Carolina Thomasville the No 1 Class 2 A team in The Associated poll heads the list of top performances this season The Bulldogs are the highest scoring team in the North west and they have allowed the fewest points Off to a 9 0 start the Bulldogs have outscored opponents 362 29 winning by an average score of 40 3 The Bulldogs who have shut out 10 opponents in their last 15 regu lar season games have allowed less than 2 yards per rushing at tempt this season And they have rushed for no less than 255 yards in any game Allen Brown who has been Thomasville's head coach since 1973 said that he has never had a team dominate the way this team has terms of margin of victory no season been through com pares with this Brown said course we haven't had as tough of a schedule this season so a big factor But I believe we're doing a little better on of fense than we normally do" Other teams that have crushed opponents week in and week out are Starmount (which has out scored opponents by an average of 29 4) Carver (27 8) and West or syth (26 8) Unbeaten North Davidson which will play host to Thomasville on riday has allowed only 78 points per game this season West or syth which began this season as the top ranked team in Class 4 A turned in perhaps the most impres sive defensive performance for a single game on Oct 18 when it held then unbeaten Parkland to mi nus 10 yards and only two first' downs in a 17 10 victory As for offense Eden Morehead Ims averaged 353 points per game and Elkin 338 Elkin scored 82 of its 304 points on Oct 18 when it hammered Northwest Ashe The Elks scored 12 touchdowns in that game Among the top individual perfor mances this season: Mark Brandon of orbush to taled 256 yards in a victory over West Wilkes He rushed for 97 yards passed for 68 and had 91 yards receiving Perez Boulware of Thomas ville tied a state record when he kicked 10 extra points in a 76 7 victory over East Davidson Chris Charles a freshman quarterback at Elkin who moved up from the junior varsity team in mid season had 332 yards total offense against Ashe Central 240 against Beaver Creek and 354 against Northwest Ashe Shannon Church of East Wilkes rushed for 201 yards and returned tin interception 66 yards against Beaver Creek Tremaine Graham of Carver completed 27 of 35 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns in a 20 18 loss to West orsyth Quarterback Brian Hampton of Beaver Creek closed the season with several strong performances including a 17 for 31 246 yard game against Northwest Ashe Mark Howell of West Wilkes rushed for 205 yards in a 63 0 vic tory over Hibriten and gained 246 yards in a victory over Hickory Carlos King who has rushed for nearly 5000 yards in his career at Starmount had three 200 yard games including a 267 yard per formance against Surry Central Rusty LaRue who has passed for more than 5000 yards in his career atNorthwest Guilford opened the season by throwing four first half touchdown passes against Southern Guilford He com pleted 13 of 18 passes for 267 yards in an 18 13 victory over East ern Guilford and completed 22 of 35 for 355 yards and four touch downs in a 38 35 loss to Reidsville Tywan Lawrence who re placed the injured Aaron Peele at quarterback for Statesville passed for 209 yards in a victory over South Iredell and set a school re cord when he passed for 375 yards in a victory over North Iredell Kenny Searcy of South Stokes scored the first two times he touched the ball this season His first touchdown came on a 90 yard run and the second on an 85 yard kickoff return in a loss to orbush Steve Smith of West Wilkes rushed for 251 yards in a victory over Ashe Central and 230 yards in a victory over Beaver Creek Tyrone Westmoreland of South Iredell rushed for 298 yards and scored five touchdowns in a victory over Central Davidson and rushed for 308 yards and four touchdowns last week in a victory over North Surry JOSH DANCY DJ SUMMERS (West Iredell) Dancy completed 23 of 52 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown Summers caught 9 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in a 42 21 loss to Statesville ANDREW DAY BRYAN PITTS (Wa tauga) Day completed 9 of 26 passes for 234 yards and 4 touch downs Pitts caught 7 passes for 208 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 42 24 loss to Hickory CHRIS AW LUKE SPLAWN (North Wilkes) aw completed 9 of 13 passes for 64 yards and at corner back made 6 tackles and Intercepted 2 passes Splawn a noseguard re turned a blocked field goal 70 yards for a touchdown and made 5 tackles in a 14 13 win over East Surry BRIAN HAMPTON JASON KRIDER SHANNON LYALLS (Beaver Creek) Hampton completed 19 of 40 passes for 249 yards passed for 3 touchdowns and rushed for 1 Krider had 9 catches for 139 yards and a touchdown Lyalls a DT made 18 tack les and recovered a fumble in a 27 8 win over Ashe Central WAHID KIMBROUGH (Carver) rushed for 202 yards and scored on runs of 1 2 5 and 78 yards In a 50 16 win over Smith CARLOS KING (Starmount) rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries in a 28 0 win over Mount Airy CHECKLIST RUSTY LARUE (NW Guilford) completed 19 of 41 passes for 288 yards passed for one touchdown and rushed for another in an 18 13 win over Eastern Guilford TERRANCE PAYNE ORD PERRY MIKE SMITH (Reynolds) Payne a receiver and linebacker caught 2 touchdown passes and added 11 tack les and 6 assists Perry completed 7 of 7 passes for 114 yards and 2 touch downs Smith rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries In a 35 6 win over Dudley LAMONT PEGUES (Thomasville) rushed for 97
