Writer Guilford played under the curi ous notion that it could over come a bevy of mistakes and still beat the NAIA fourth ranked team in a Carolinas Conference £4 iff THE GAME was marked by one distinct turning point The Orangemen roughly three touchdown underdogs even on their own field held the up per hand for most of the first half TT T'TAf Coach rank Maloney wisely decided that the best way to keep the ball away from State's explosive offensive unit was to hold onto it as long as possible The strategy was sound its implementation was made possi ble by the pin point punting of Bernie meteorlogical maps or just plain gazing into crystal balls took quite a beating Satur day a 100 per cent chance of showers and thundershowers during the intoned the press box announcer prior to the North Carolina State Syracuse football battle As it turned out nothing but sun drenched the ancient stad ium' And then there was a State drive in the fourth period It was first and 10 on the Syracuse Il yard line and a touchdown would have given the Wolfpack a 21 point advantage with less than seven minutes to play as we chuc kled the press box inhabitants exactly The drive fell short and Syracuse responded by covering 80 yards in a little over four minutes At the end State found itself in the unusual posi tion of running out the clock content with its surprisingly hard fought 28 22 victory Avellini seemed to uphold the reports rAnd here came Carolina with a 2 0 record and a 73 7 scoring margin over its opponents and with designs of its own on the Atlantic Coast Conference title 'Then were quick to captalize on their fortunes raced to a 28 0 halftime lead then held on to defeat the Aggies 28 19 before 13086 fans The Aggies football camp has been surrounded by adversity this week Spears back at his season starting spot never had a better day directing the Blue Devils from a 7 0 first quarter deficit in a new found aerial attack throwing to Randy Cobb for the go ahead touchdown and (hen running the last one himself Martinez had gone into the fray sharing the individ ual scoring lead with Virginia split end Ken Shelton and the Duke tailback got two touch downs and then threw the key block on rollout for that final score The Spears Cobb pass had eliminated the possibil ity that one Blue Devil Marti nez might score all the points for the year Shelton meanwhile was strictly a decoy although Scott Gardner did throw the one Cava lier touchdown to his up to now star receiver Virginia pass' plays looked elsewhere the re ma i of cord evaded it after 15 minutes Guilford played
