Wheeler says that closing the infields or severely limiting admission is a coming trend Indianapolis we all found out that if you have anybody in the infield you can eliminate a lot of the (traffic) Wheeler said taking those few people away makes a big difference That track is very hemmed in too got to have a sport that has a presence in the top 10 markets already got the heartland Indy sort df gave us the Chicago market fringe as it was New Hamp shire gave us Boston got Atlanta If we build in Dallas have Dallas go ing to build a track in Dallas and get two dates is going to build a track within 50 miles of New York City But the Miami track (Ralph new Homestead plan) will be a big Sanchez the Miami businessman who is considered one of the top racing promoters in the country is currently building a track in south lorida and NASCAR has committed a Grand National race to that facility NAS CAR is avoiding any discussion of a Winston Cup date Daytona after all is only 300 miles north But Miami is the 11th largest market in the country rance hopes that some of his secondary racing series such as the Grand National tour and the new Supertruck tour may be able to take up some of the marketing slack and that fans and sponsors may be willing to ac cept one of those races instead of a Win ston Cup event The Grand National tour is still struggling and Sanchez may play a big role in its future The Supertruck tour which Winston Cup teams are under heavy pres sure to support has races set in a number of new NASCAR markets Portland Ore Se attle Denver Milwaukee Topeka Kan St Louis and Louisville Ky out here pushing the envelope as far as we can push Helton said of the schedule which runs from early ebruary through late November Los Angeles and the two special weekends (the Busch Clash at Daytona and the Winston all star race at Charlotte) up to 35 weeks a CERTIIED AUTO SERVICE 90 days EE $1000 OR ALL PLAYING LEVELS I 7831 Northpoint Blvd 759 2404 1 3500 Patterson Smith says that NASCAR has to look at the other major sports and the markets they reach because NASCAR in eyes is competing for dollars think NASCAR is on the verge of some major growth But look at the NL and the NBA all the older sports and look at their Smith said NL really grew be cause of its facilities And NASCAR will have to grow because of its facilities Our sport is really no better than its facilities are markets out there that NAS CAR needs to cover Dallas ort Worth is a huge market the second busiest airport in the world and in four years it will be No 1 The market is the seventh biggest in the US I have received letters from a number of major companies involved in that area put ting out the welcome mat for us That would bring an awful lot to this sport It would bring more ortune 500 companies to this sport and we need that looked at 12 to 14 sites (near Dallas) and narrowed it down to three told the people in Dallas ort Worth that once we break ground I think we can build this facility in nine months the speed way itself is totally Smith the only businessman trying to wrangle a Winston Cup track in the Texas market and rance yet jumped in to promise Smith a Winston Cup date usually get involved until the shovel is turning Helton said there is no doubt in mind that Bruton Smith can build a track and no doubt that Roger Penske can build a track and no doubt that Ralph Sanchez can build a track put as big a premium on markets as does the NL But to be able to go into the No 1 auto market in the US Southern California important enough for NASCAR to break with tradition (and promise a Building a new track cheap have a real estate background but I have never seen any project as hard to fund as a race says Sanchez who plans to have his track ready for racing by November 1996 first budgeted $365 million for the proj ect but we have almost doubled that now I We have committed $55 million and we are committed to spending between $6 million to $10 million more over the next 24 months may spend as much as $70 million by the time we Ducks 4 Jets 3: The Anaheim Mighty Ducks got great goaltending from Mikhail Shtalenkov and capital ized on sloppy Winnipeg defensive work to defeat the host Jets Shtalenkov was the difference par ticularly in the third when the Ducks were outshot 17 4 Overall he made 34 saves as the Ducks were outshot 37 24 It was the second NHL game this (Season for both teams who played (before a sparse crowd of less than 10000 Joe Sacco Patrik Carnback Paul Kariya and Bobby Dollas scored for Anaheim Keith Tkachuk Teemu Se lanne and Nelson Emerson scored for Winnipeg It until 4:29 of the second that Tkachuk put the first point on the' scoreboard Sacco scored just more than two minutes later with a shot drifted past a scrambling Tim Cheveldae in the Win nipeg net Carnback then slipped through the defenders to score another at 8:28 to make it 2 1 Selanne scored on a rebound at 9:22 to tie the game But a bad job clearing the puck let Kariya drive home Anaheim's third goal of the game on a power play opportunity at 12:15 of the second 4155 Patterson Ave Behind Home Center 661 0000 Majestic PAINT SERVICE Rangers 5 Canadiens 2: Mark Messier and Alexei Kovalev scored goals a minute apart late in the third period as New York scored four pow er play goals to defeat visiting Mont real and spoil the opening? night The Canadiens had two power play scores themselves as the teams com bined to score six of the game's seven goals with the man advantage Messier broke a 2 2 tie with 6:27 to play in the third period as he lifted a backhand from the slot past Montreal goaltender Patrick Roy who made 35 saves in a strong losing effort One minute later Kovalev snapped Petr cross ice pass behind Roy for the Rangers' first even strength goal of the season Brian Noonan added an insurance i goal with 252 seconds left and New York enjoying a two man advantage I OAK HOLLOW INDOOR TENNIS CENTER 1315 Oakview Rd High Point NC $19995 REG $39995 SAVE $20000 The NASCAR schedule in the coining i' years will be changing even more says Humpy Wheeler the president of Charlotte Motor (Speedway and some familiar tracks may not be on the Winston Cup circuit much longer i rance says expand the schedule to give Penske a race in LA but before any more new races are added to the Winston Cup tour rance says have to cut some tj current races il Junior Johnson also says NASCAR must expand into more markets think the Midwest is one of the bestmarkets out Johnson said I still think we go north enough A big su perspeedway in the Baltimore area would be i great Hopefully we can get to the Dallas area and maybe St Louis too i we may have to lose some (current) dates When you have to go from Sears Point ji to Pocono back to back a pretty j1 rough trip for a team You handle tooe much of that You go from one side of the country to the other just too much Ji strain on the team i I think see (NAS CAR) dropping a race at North Wilkesboro i Bristol or Martinsville if they do see a war about like they have over in Russia (right i Economics not necessarily NASCAR fiat will squeeze some tracks off the circuit NAS CAR's Mike Helton and Wheeler said ji hope the short tracks ever total Limited warranty 6 months or 6000 miles whichever first Additional parts labor extra goal lifts Nordiques to victoiy JOURNAL Sunday January 22 1995 PAGE C9 HARLOTTE Roger deci sion to build a new race track near Los Angeles was one of the ton stories of 1994 and uphill battle to build that superspeedway will be one of the top sto ries in the racing world this year The LA market is so important to NAS CAR that Bill rance has sent his top lieuten ant Les Richter to California to help And rance breaking with tradition 'has already promised Penske a Winston 'Cup date when the track opens Now Bruton Smith who owns tracks in Charlotte and Atlanta wants to build a new superspeedway near Dallas and he expects to get two Wmston Cup dates from NASCAR open with 160000 seats and 205 Smith said 4 Las Vegas businessmen are trying to rbuild a track St Louis is another popular site for a potential Winston Cup track Indian apolis joined the tour last summer San ran i cisco is now a solid stock car market and Bob Loudon NH track which held its first Cup race in 1993 now gives NAS CAR the Boston market Expanding into new markets is important Ito NASCAR Walt Czarnecki one of is top associates said: in racing are in a very sponsor fragile environment A lot of de cisions affecting NASCAR are made on Madison Avenue in New York Los Angeles once boasted two super speedways and three Winston Cup races every (year But Riverside was sold for condos and l' a shopping center and Ontario was torn down for tax credits that were more valuable than i the profit that the track could return Czarnecki denies persistent reports about problems in getting governmental approval for building a track on the San Bernardino i County land that was used for some 40 years by Kaiser Steel ly eliminated from the Winston Cup se Helton said the decision mak ing process will be economics can a short track build enough seats to stay in competition with the rest of the Winston Cup 1998 the minimum purses will probably be in the $15 million Wheeler said is going to hit the tracks is not only the increase in purses but that the asphalt is also wearing out twice as fast Look at how many tracks have had to be repaved Plus insurance has gone' up Ev erything has gone up the 50 percent of the tracks that are aggressively trying to get their sponsors up and their TV revenue up good But if in the bottom 50 percent well either be just breaking even or losing money the tough part got to add seats to stay in business But for every 10000 seats you add another 3300 cars on the road Do you have enough high way to take care of 3300 more cars? And you need 33 acres more parking a lot of land And do you have enough sewage and water to do it? you have a race that has more than 75000 spectators going to be using400000 gallons of water or our 600 we go through about 650000 gallons of water Then it becomes how much water can you get to that race track? the infrastructure If our guys at Charlotte do such a good job (with traf fic) have never gotten as far as we have with this antiquated road MUST CALL OR APPOINTMENT Judy Royall Local Coordinator on days same as tashi Avoiloble on purchases of S2GOOO or more on Goodyear Credit Card only No interest for 90 days for qualified buyers Purchases not paid in full during the 90 doy period ore subiecl to finance charges that will accrue at A 2196 (21 in (0 204 in PR 198 in IA: and 18 in ME NC and Wl) Min finance charge $050 (none in NC and PR) See store for details 30 DAY 500 MILE SATISACTION GUARANTEE If you're not satisfied with your new Goodyear tires return them with the soles receipt within 30 days of the sale dote or 500 miles of use to the location where purchased for comparable new Goodyear tires or your money bark REE MOUNTING REE ROTATION Every 6000 miles with lire purchase Prices limited warranties credit terms and auto service offers shown available ol Goodyear Auto Service (enters See any of the below listed independent dealers for their competitive prices warranties and credit terms RAIN (HECK If we sell out of your she we will issue you rain check assur ing future delivery at the advertised price REE Preventive Maintenance Check I (on request) Lube (where applicable) new filter up Ito 5 quarts major brand oil (brands vary) Most cars Special diesel oil filter extra Call for appt Disposal fee $125 EASTERN CONERENCE Atlantic Division WHEEL ALIGNMENT 1 1 IN 2 Wheel ThruslAnqleA 4 Wheel (most front (most vehicles wheel drive vehicles Games Buffalo 2 NY Rangers 1 "XT" Pittsburgh 5 Tampa Bay 3 Detroit 4 Chicago 1 Calgary 3 Winnipeg 3 tie Edmonton 2 Anaheim 1 Dallas 1 Vancouver 1 tie St Louis 5 San Jose 2 Toronto 3 Los Angeles 3 tie Games Quebec 3 Philadelphia 1 Washington 1 Hartford 1 tie NY Islanders 2 lorida 1 NY Rangers 5 Montreal 2 Anaheim 4 Winnipeg 3 St Louis at Vancouver (n) Toronto at San Jose (n) Games Philadelphia at Boston 1:30 pm Calgary at Detroit 3:30 pm Ottawa at NY Islanders 7 pm New Jersey at Hartford 7 pm Buffalo at Tampa Bay 7:30 pm Edmonton at Los Angeles 10:30 pm Collisi iff 'll a '0'1 I 1 fl III I i il BWBWBwMh 1 swjp xsii is lagmmMi fl a ml pamywiHqygBgg fVlEIKIW an rirnffliHMl HHEI mH I HBI 1 1 '1 1 HHH Z4 Mike Mulhern I Im TPts GA NY islanders 1 0 0 2 2 1 NY Rangers 1 1 0 2 6 4 Washington 0 0 111 1 New Jersey 0 0 0 0 0 0 lorida 0 10 0 1 2 Philadelphia 0 100 1 3 Tampa Bay 0 1 0 0 3 5 Northeast Division Buffalo 1 0 02 21 Pittsburgh 0 0 2 5 3 Quebec 100 23 1 Hartford 0 0 111 1 Boston 0 0 0 0 0 0 Ottawa 0 0 0 0 0 0 Montreal 0 1 0 0 2 TPts GA Detroit 1 0 0 2 4 1 St Louis 10 0 2 5 2 Dallas 0 0 11 1 1 Toronto 4 0 0 1 1 3 3 Winnipeg 0 1 1 16 7 Chicago 0 10 0 1 4 Pacific Division Edmonton 0 0 2 2 1 Anaheim 110 2 5 5 Calgary 0 0 11 3 3 Los Angeles 0 0 1133 Vancouver 0 0 1 111 San Jose 0 1 0 2 5 1.
