Big Dance Tonigkt Deadwood Firemen's Pavilion Music By Blumentkal's Orchestra ll I adjutant-general, the government is maintaining these regiments and paying all expense. There aTe more men in the national guard than la perhaps any Institution in the state, Lawrence County Farm Bureau News on the Job (or their gaurd regiments, or some like provision (or detail work. Expenditure of a little more money in this direction! bring big returns 1 the time when these officers are charged with the responsibility of bringing their men home safe and sound. But considering the expenditure particularly, the record up to date Is "very satisfactory." and it is maintained atuhe least expense. It Is possible that the economy is at some cost In preparedness for the care of men in the organization.

Most surrounding states have, full time commanders and adjutnts for Spring health and strength SPRING NEEDS. Farmers and ranchmen will need funds for their spring1 requirements, and merchants for payment of spring stocks. These needs we are glad to supply along the line of safe loans. Let our bank help you. FIRST NATIONAL BANK DEADWOOD Bill of water, is used against the worms, while lime-sulphur, live quarts of the liquid (two and one-half pounds of the powdered, form) to each 60 gallons of water, is used as a- spray (or scab.

One of the most important things about spraying fruit is to get the various on at the proper time. The best time to spray for apple scab is just before the blossoms open or when the buds 'are showing pink. Fair results can also be secured just after the blossoms have (alien. The most important spray tor worms should be applied just after the blossoms fall. This pest can be further reduced by two or three subsequent sprays applied about three Weeks apart.

For persons bo situated that he has time to spray but once, spraying just after the blossoms fall will prove most practical. He should use both lead arsenate and lime-sulphur at above mentioned strengths. By doing this, two things will be accomplished with but one operation, the reduction of both apple worm and apple Scab. Never -spray fruit of any kind when in full bloom. This encourages poor pollination.

Furthermore, an arsenical spray, applied to blooming (rult, will kill many bees resulting In a poor stand. Do not spray in a high wind. Do not be afraid to eat sprayed fruit. There is absolutely no danger from arsenical poisoning. Practically all of our commercial apples are sprayed four or Ave times, yet we have never heard of an individual being poisoned from eating such fr(uit.

There Is a marked Increase in the amount of seed corn to be planted this year that has been tested. Many people who had to replow their fields last year have tested their corn this year and (rom now on will not be satisfied with planting just any corn and taking a shot at it. They will know. As a result, corn will be more profitable (or people in this county. Hazle Complimented By Hanford McNider (ContUied (rom Pase 1) report to the adjutant-general and to Col.

Boyd Wales, commander, with an endorsement to the effect that "It is very gratifying fo note, and to forward the foregoing report, reporting the high state of morale, discipline and efficiency of the 147th." The 147th 1b the veteran organization of the state. It carries on, the traditions and records of tha wartime 147th, which in turn traces a continuous line back through the Fourth South Dakota Infantry off border service, the Third and Second South Dakota Infantry of, the early 1900's. and the First South Dakota Volunteer Infantry of Spanish War days. A contrast in age is offered by the engineer outfit in the state, but military men are optimistic that the record of this new regiment will rank with that of the artillery as It continues its development. One battalion of the engineers will go to its fourth annual encampment this summer, but the other has only two training camps to its credit.

Three years ago the 109th Engineers became a combat regiment. It is commanded by Col. Earl Lewis of Rapid City. Most of its officers and many of its men saw wartime; service, and the list of officers includes a number of civil engineers. The 366th Infantry la a paper organization, made up of units that will be filled out in the time of emergency.

The national defense act provides that in such event skeleton regiments shall be filled with men from their home localities and then sent to training camps. This contrasts with the wartime system of sending men (rom scattered communities and then putting them in organizations The officers and part of the non-coms of thiB paper organization are under a constant training schedule by correspondence and their superiors have expressed satisfaction with their work. CIRCULINE Waving Dallmann Beaute Shoppe Franklin Hotel. Deadwood I "Wave A large number of requests have come into the office this week asking (or (urther information on seed potato treatment. This office is recommending corrosive sublimate at the rate of four ounces to thirty gallons of -water, soaking potatoes for one and one-halt hours and using the mixture not more than (our times. Bare Brothers on Crow Creek are planting two tons of certified seed potatoes this year. They are treating their potatoes and will have very line quality seed available for next year.

Clean seed free from disease is a considerable (actor In determining yields. Most of the farmers in Lawrence county were able to get through this past bad storm without material stock losses. However, the loss in the sheep country has been rather severe. Here "Are Two Good Items Try This With Your Next Order AT ALL GROCERS It may seem odd to be talking shelter belt demonstrations In Law rence county with so many trees in abundance but the Northern Great Plains field station is distributing co-operative shelter belts (or demonstration work and have been (or a number of years. The shelter belts range from 600 to 1,000 trees ready (or planting.

A number of Meade county farmers have in the past availed themselves of this opportunity and it is available to farmers in Lawrence county. If you are interested in securing one of these shel ter belts free of charge, we shall be glad to give you further informs tion. The North Dakota Farm Management division of the extension department issued a letter recently to the (armors of North Dakota advising them tlat due to the lateness of the season and insecurity of wheat returns planted this late in the year, that they may well look to flax as a substitute crop. The last estimate of the flax crop In Argentina indicates the crop 1b 8 per cent below the crop of last year. Two large crops have been abaorD-ed in the United States at relatively high rates Perhaps Lawrence county farmers may look to this crop as a substitute (or some of their wheat providing they can secure wilt resistant seed.

With the present outlook of wheat and flax prices, flax may be seeded with the likelihood of increased Teturns over wheat. On land where pigeon grass Is the most serious weed, flax should be seeded as early as possible to get ahead of the pigeon graBS which does not start until the weather becomes warm. However, on land infected with wild oats, seeding should be delayed in order to allow these weeds to sprout and to allow destroying them before seeding the flax. Flax is an excellent crop to use as a nurse crop (or alfalfa and sweet clover it requires a well prepared, firm seed bed. Apple trees, that are properly sprayed at the right time, will not only outyleld trees but will produce a much larger proportion of sound fruit.

Many more orchard owners do not spray because they believe a lot of elaborate and expensive spraying machinery, is necessary. For the small orchards this is not true. The orchard trees in Spearfish Valley can be sprayed (or about a nickel per application. Efficient spraying can be done with an ordin-ary barrel pump costing from $10 to $20, provided an extension rod is used to get the spray to an parts o( the trees. For a few trees good work can be done with a small 3 or 4 gallon compressed air sprayer, but again it Is absolutely necessary to use a good long extension rod.

There are two outstanding ene. nt tha annlo an ffrnwn In home orchards in South Dakota. One is the ordinary worm ana tne other is a fungus disease known as apple scab. Spraying should be aimed mainly against these. There are few nrchards in Soearflsh Valley that show apple scab.
