Perhaps the trade hasn't noticed that. Mr. Arnold is supposed to be curious. THREAT The unpleasant but highly realistic side of war, which thousands of mothers now living can reciill vividly, is brought to mind by the army's plea for nurses and the Red Cross' concentration on surgical bandages for our own use. Bronchitis, influenza, blistered feet and bruised shins require cer tain medical attention when troops are in camp, even in peacetime.

But when modern war strikes, the na tion has endless wounds to be bound up by surgeons. The war department has given notice of immediate and urgent need for registered nurses for its re serve corps. Almost 1,500 are need ed for active service this month, another large quota in February, and more than 750 in March. By the end of June there should be 4,019 on active duty. There are 17,000 nurs' es registered as available for active duty, but response to immediate calls has been unsatisfactory.

Meanwhile the Red Cross, which has made some nine millions of sur gical dressings for war-torn Europe, has sent word to its local chapters that the time has come to prepare for U. S. needs. The organization's 3,700 chapters or as many as have facilities to make bandages under sanitary conditions were told that while any war scare would be undesirable, they had better get ready to make dressings in quantity for our own boys. Some of the chapters arc calling on church groups and other women's organizations to provide assistance.

The threat of war is coming home to mothers. By John deMeyer One thing we need right now is a definition of a democracy. If we had to live in some of the "democracies" we're supposed to be saving, we'd start looking for the nearest Mayflower. There's only one real democracy left that's the USA ind we're only operating part time. laiiii It was the day of the single umpire, Klem recalled as he paced about his home here, looking back on his 36 years as a National league umpire and his three-year appren ticeship in the minors.

He picked up his story: "I moved into Milwaukee for a series. Came an inning when the visiting club put a runner on first and I went out behind the pitcher. From a place behind the mound the umpire could call the balls and strikes and at the same time cover plays at the bases. "The player at first started steal and I ran down to second It was close, but I saw he was safe, I guve my signal and started back to my place behind the plate, from where I could watch the plays better with man on second. "Just then I heard a player behind mc shouting complaints that the runner was out.

I didn't turn my head, but from the roar of the crowd I knew it was my man, an outfielder, and I knew he was gullopiiig toward me. "I just kept on trotting and he kept on coming. As I crossed the pitcher's mound I put out my toe and drew a line, then trotted on in to the plate without looking around. "When I reached my place I faced the field. There he was, toeing the line and using language I won't repeat right here cross that line." Since then all ball players have learned that an umpire means bus- iness when he draws a line.

Learn of the relief she says it gave her. She states: "For MRS. MAE HEFNER a long time I have been a sufferer from muscular pains. I also had some liver an dstomach trouble. My side would pain me terribly so that I could not rest at night, and through faulty action of the liver, I was told, caused the stom- I ach to act unnaturally.

I was ner- vous and restless and while I am 1 ordinarily good natured, I was hard to get along with. After taking a little more than one bottle of Hoyt's Compound I was so improved that I was almost entirely free from pain. My liver seems to function normally, and I can eat anything and enjoy it. My kidneys are doing fine and I can truthfully attribute all this relief to Hoyt's Compound. Anyone will not make a mistake by taking Hoyt's Compound.
