PAGE 34 THURSDAY MAY 17 1990 WINSTON SALEM JOURNAL STANDINGS EATURES Sports Jordan and By Clifton Brown THE NEW YORK TIMES CHICAGO When Michael Jordan plays the way he did last night he needs only a little assistance Scottie Pippen provided more than enough Jordan scored 37 points and Pippen 29 to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 117 99 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers at Chicago Stadium that clinched their NBA playoff series By winning the best of seven series 4 1 Chica Pippen Help Bulls Eliminate Sixers go advanced to the Eastern Conference final for the second consecutive season The Bulls will meet the Pistons for the Eastern title beginning Sunday afternoon in Auburn Hills Mich It was an emotional evening for Pippen who missed the fourth game of the series on Sunday because of the death of his father And it was a frustrating night for Charles Bark ley scoring and emotional leader who was held to 17 points seven of them in the second half sympathize with Charles said Jordan who made 17 of 26 shots from the field He carrying a load a lot of pressure on him pretty sure look at that and try to give him more help as they build this team expected a seven game series but you have to give us credit for the way we played A lot of guys stepped up for Trailing 63 62 at halftime the Bulls opened the third quarter with a 14 2 burst to take a 77 65 MM and then never looked back Jordan began the run with a jumper from the top of the key then Pippen followed with a 3 point shot that gave Chicago a 4 point lead After John steal Jordan swished a 3 point shot of his own then Pippen followed with a 15 foot jump shot The sellout crowd began to rock Chicago Stadi um sensing that the 76ers were about to fold They were right See CHICAGO Page 37 I MICHAEL JORDAN: Scores 37 points 5 Deacons Earn Bid To NCAA Tourney By John Delong JOURNAL REPORTER Wake golf team claimed its biggest victory of the season yes terday without even teeing up The Deacons were officially ex tended a bid to the NCAA East Re gional at the Sheraton Resort in Sa vannah Ga May 24 26 The announcement capped a bi zarre controversy filled selection process for teams in the NCAA Dis trict 3 North as the NCAA na tional selection committee took the matter into its hands yester day at the re quest of the dis trict advisory committee Wake and East Tennessee State were ex tended the final two bids allotted for District 3 North with Wake given the No 7 seed and East Tennessee State seeded No 8 South Carolina another hopeful was not invited 1 Coach Jesse Haddock of Wake in Edmond Okla with his team for the Oak Tree Invitational expressed re lief last night that his team had emerged from the controversy with a bid "I am very very Had dock said thought all along that we should be seeded at least seventh in the district but got to admit it got a little hairy there for a while with all the politics that were in volved just glad everything got settled the way it should Wake will be participating in NCAA postseason action for the 24th consecutive year JOE EAGANES the golf coach at Marshall and the chairman of the NCAA golf committee said that his committee made the decision yester day at the request of the District 3 North committee which is headed by Coach Larry Penley of Clemson "Once we began looking at the final two spots it was our opinion that Wake orest was clearly ahead of East Tennessee and South Caroli na based on the criteria for selection So from there it was a matter of picking between East Tennessee and South Carolina for the eighth The controversy arose on Tuesday when the District 3 North commit tee originally met to determine the eight bids to the regional The first six seeds were decided quickly Georgia Tech Clemson Virginia NC State Duke and North Carolina But a stalemate arose between Wake ETSU and South Carolina JESSE HADDOCK 1 See DEACONS Page 37 Driver Dies in Speedway Accident HARRISBURG NASCAR lost another driver yesterday its third fatality this season as stock car Winston All Star week got off to a tragic start at Charlotte Motor Speedway During a lazy round of practice yesterday for NAS youngest and least experienced racers those in the near novice Sportsman division David Gaines was killed after his car was rammed full speech from behind while sitting idle in the middle of the fourth turn Gaines suffered massive head injuries and was re ported dead on arrival at University Memorial Hos pital five miles south of here The tragedy comes just four days before sixth running of The Win ston all star race Hb!
